Chapter 933 - 933 104 Strike When Halfway Across the City

933: Chapter 104, Strike When Halfway Across the City 933: Chapter 104, Strike When Halfway Across the City Dapes, upon receiving the battlefield reports, the high officials of the Moxi Duchy began to panic.

Even those of high temperament couldn’t bear the continuous failures on the battlefield.

Despite having contingency plans, no one wanted to resort to them so soon.

“The enemy’s offensive is too fierce; the Augustusburg Defense Line is in grave danger; the Orton Duchy is on the verge of collapse; fighting on two fronts has become inevitable.

What strategies do we have to deal with what comes next?”

George asked with concern.

As the King, he was acutely aware of the predicament the Moxi Duchy was currently facing.

The speed of the collapse of the front lines was for two main reasons.

Apart from the demoralizing number of routed soldiers that had been collected, there was another practical factor—the defenses were not sufficiently robust.

The initial construction of the Augustusburg Defense Line was to counter enemies from the north, and it had been damaged during the previous orc invasion.

The current enemy came from the west, and all the defenses had been hastily repaired.

Even the famous Augustusburg was merely a half-finished product; its defensive capability was far from what it had been before.

With two adverse factors combined, if the frontline defenses could still hold back the Ancient Remnant Allied Army, it would be nothing short of miraculous.

While George had anticipated a breach in the defenses, he hadn’t expected the front lines to collapse so quickly.

They should have held out for at least a month or two, buying some time for the duchy to regroup!

It was frustrating enough that their own troops underperformed, but to learn that their ally’s performance was even worse was disheartening.

In just over ten days since the start of the war, the Orton Duchy had lost city after city.

Now even the Capital was teetering, on the brink of falling at any moment.

Complaining was pointless, as the Orton Duchy had also suffered heavy losses in the last great war.

Their performance now, compared to the last time they faced an orc invasion, had improved significantly.

Out of a possible hundred points, the Orton Duchy had raised its score from ten to twenty, a startling improvement.

However, the base was so low that reaching a passing grade seemed far out of reach.

“Your Majesty, the elite reinforcements from the Alpha Kingdom are already en route, only two hundred miles away from Augustusburg.

The defenders need only hold out for a few more days, and the situation will improve.

With Marshal Hudson leading the team in person, the battlefront at Augustusburg can be considered secure.

The pressing issue now is the dire situation we will face after the collapse of the Orton Duchy.”

Count Martins spoke slowly.

The Military Department had done its utmost, but the disparity in strength between the two sides was too great.

With the drag of incompetent allies, overturning the situation had become even harder.

“Count Martins, the current international situation is extremely unfavorable for us.

The Elf Race has already deployed its troops.

If nothing unexpected happens, we will soon receive the dire news of the destruction of Canterloo, Ustad, and Fick—the three great duchies.

Provoked by this, the Different Races have gone mad.

Not only has the Ancient Heritage Alliance intensified its offensive, but the Orc Empire has also started to mobilize.

Of the Prairie Seven Kingdoms, apart from the three that have fallen, two more are in their final stages.

Now only the Bright Kingdom and the Franterune Kingdom remain with substantial power.

How long they can hold out, no one can say for sure.

If not for the vastness of the great prairie, the battles there would have likely already concluded.

In such a context, the Alpha Kingdom is about to be overwhelmed and can offer us only very limited support.

On the South Continent battlefield, we of the Human Race are indeed gaining the upper hand, but it will take time to decide the victor.

Besides, even if the great war ends, they would first provide support to the battlefields of the Central Continent.

At the very least, we cannot expect strong support from the Human Alliance in the next half-year.”

Count Reynato said with a look of distress.

When it comes to foreign affairs, the core principle is always interest.

On this foundation, only with the emergence of an outstanding diplomat can operations occasionally produce one or two miracles.

If core interests are not involved, the diplomacy of the Continent of Aslante is less effective than letting the King curry favors directly.

Helping allies rather than justice is the norm.

The current situation clearly does not apply.

No matter how intertwined the royal marriages among nations are, they must give way to national strategy.

To change the strategic decision of a major country, the price to be paid is more than just a trifle.

To preserve the duchy’s foundations, George had already managed to win over Caesar IV and Hudson, but that didn’t mean he had the capacity to win over the nations of the South Continent.

All this debacle was caused by the fall of the Warhammer Kingdom; if it hadn’t been for that wastrel, Joseph II, the situation surely wouldn’t have been this dire.

In past continental wars, the ancient tribes had nothing to do with it.

Whenever a continent-wide war broke out, they were fighting amongst themselves.

“Count Reynato, perhaps the situation isn’t as bad as it seems.

The ancient tribes have always been suppressed by the Warhammer Clan; their actual strength might not be as formidable as everyone anticipates.

The defeats on the battlefield are primarily due to the duchy’s strength being severely diminished.

Compared to three years ago, our power has not increased but decreased.

Don’t forget that in recent years, the nobles have been recovering, skimping every copper coin as if trying to split it in two, and we all know the state of affairs the serfs are living in.

With bellies unfilled, where will the strength to fight come from?

The veteran soldiers painstakingly nurtured by the duchy during the last war have been starved in recent years, their combat effectiveness perhaps reduced to four or five out of ten points.

The situation in the Alpha Kingdom is much better.

With the Black Forest People stirring up enmity, their domestic nobles dare not neglect military preparations.

Even nobles with a bit of wealth regularly organize serfs for military training, and the combat effectiveness of the veterans has been relatively better preserved.”
