Chapter 1017 - 1017 134 Forced to Divide Forces

The screech of the vultures broke the tranquility of the grassland.

The battle had ended, leaving only debris and scorched earth that spoke of war’s cruelty.

Another Orc tribe had been wiped out, and the Hawkman officer who came to survey the scene wore a terribly grim expression; this was already the thirteenth tribe to suffer such a fate.

What goes around comes around.

Since the Human cavalry entered the vast grassland, the slaughter of Orc tribes had become the norm.

To minimize losses, the Imperial Court demanded they notify each tribe with utmost speed to migrate quickly and avoid the enemy’s blade.

Affected by the war, the population of the Orc Empire had plummeted rapidly, especially the losses among vassal races, which had dwindled to less than a quarter of what it had been five years earlier.

If the losses continued, the Orc Empire would be doomed.

Without substantial support from the vassal races, even the Five Royal Clans couldn’t sustain an empire.

“Lord Baihu, we’re too late.

From the looks of the scene, the battle must have occurred yesterday.

The enemy didn’t just kill all the people of the Kagu Tribe; they also took some of the livestock.

We could track them by following the hoofprints; it shouldn’t be too difficult,”

No sooner had the soldier finished speaking than the middle-aged Lord Baihu officer scolded him, “Gareth, don’t get ahead of yourself.

Our mission is to notify the nearby tribes to avoid the enemy, not to seek out the enemy’s position.

With the empire’s rear exposed, it’s impossible to gather an army capable of confronting the enemy in the short term; finding their location is pointless.”

All these reasons were mere excuses; the real reason they didn’t pursue was that the middle-aged officer wasn’t ready to die.

Operating on the grassland without intelligence was a no-go.

As main forces of the Kingdom’s Air Force, the Gryphon Dragon Cavalry naturally appeared amidst the army.

Approaching recklessly could spell disaster if spotted by the enemy air force, making escape difficult.

The reason the news of the enemy landing hadn’t been transmitted immediately was mainly because the enemy air force had acted to silence them.

Though both part of the air force, most Hawkman soldiers were less capable than Human Magical Beast Knights.

It wasn’t that their talents were lacking, but that their population base was too small.

The Human Magical Beast Knights recruited only elites, whereas they had a universal conscription.

As an old soldier who survived the war, the middle-aged Lord Baihu knew his limits well and stuck to what he could manage, never challenging the limits of life.

Reprimanded, Gareth’s face fell instantly.

An opportunity for recognition had just flown by him.

Just as he was about to say something, a scream suddenly rang in his ear.

A fellow Hawkman soldier had accidentally stepped on a trap and was instantly killed by bone spikes piercing through him.

Suddenly, the corpses on the ground came back to life and began attacking them frenziedly.

“Damn!

There’s a Necromancer in the enemy’s ranks who has performed an Undead transformation on the corpses.

All Hawkmen, take to the skies and evacuate immediately,”

the middle-aged Lord Baihu urgently ordered.

Yet, the command was a bit too late; the Undead transformation ritual was already complete.

These leaderless Undead creatures now fought solely on instinct.

In a brief moment, two more Hawkman soldiers tragically fell.

Of the ten-man team that had come, only the middle-aged Lord Baihu and Gareth were fortunate enough to survive.

Looking down at the Undead creatures running amok below, Gareth cast a hateful gaze.

Just moments ago, his best friend had been devoured by the Undead creatures.

“Let’s go!”

Without giving him time to hesitate, the middle-aged Lord Baihu grabbed him and flew off towards the distance.

Now was not the time for sorrow; the command needed their intelligence.

Undead creatures were the greatest enemy of all beings; the enemy was creating Undead on the grasslands, which could fundamentally undermine the Orcs.

If they didn’t act quickly, as soon as a King among those Undead creatures emerged, a vast Undead army that could sweep across the lands would appear soon.

On the great grassland, Hudson had already quietly infiltrated the ranks, commanding the cavalry to slaughter all around them.

Watching one Orc tribe after another being annihilated, his heart remained undisturbed as if everything were as it should be.

“Marshal, the enemy has begun to assemble an army to encircle us.

Many neighboring tribes are spontaneously drawing together, and there are no suitable targets left nearby.

Shall we strike a major blow and completely destroy their Alliance, eradicating the area’s last resistance in one fell swoop?”

Count Albert suggested excitedly.

Fighting the Orcs, all the Alpha People were enthusiastic.

The hatred etched deep in their bones was enough to drive them to bring their supplies to the battlefield.

Following Hudson to raid the Orc lairs further excited the Expedition Army Corps.

If this battle was fought well, they’d have material to boast about for the rest of their lives.

Compared to the less notable Ancient tribes, the Orcs definitely held a higher profile and more bragging rights in the people’s hearts of their nation.

“No rush, let them gather.

Send orders down the line to continue targeting smaller tribes that haven’t yet assembled.

Allow the Army Corps to divide their forces and strike in all directions, the bigger the commotion, the better!”

Hudson said cheerfully.

It’s great if they gather, fearing only if the Orcs didn’t assemble.

When hundreds of thousands, even millions, gather together, sustaining both people and livestock becomes a major problem.

No matter the kind of grassland, it couldn’t sustain so many people and animals; resource shortages under such circumstances would inevitably lead to conflict.
