The atmosphere was somewhat awkward and equally quiet. Muria looked at the broken longbow in his hand, then raised his head to look at his father Batu, and finally took the initiative to break the silence,
“Your bow is broken, Father!”
“…” Batu raised his finger to point at Muria, his body trembling. His mindset was somewhat shattered, his longbow had been broken by his own son. First, it indicated that his son’s strength had reached a terrifying level; and second, his junior wife was lost to him.
“I didn’t do it on purpose, I didn’t use too much strength, it was that your bow was on the verge of breaking!” Muria added quickly, he felt that his strength really wasn’t that great. At the very least, it wasn’t even close to the strength he had when he was just born.
“Ule, you…” Batu lifted his hand, pointing at Muria, his fingers trembling.
“Why don’t I make another bow for you?” Seeing his father somewhat angry and as though he might even want to start a fight, Muria tentatively asked.
Muria had seen the affection his father had for this longbow. Almost every time he went to the treehouse, nine times out of ten he would see his father maintaining this longbow.
It was clear to see that his father valued this longbow greatly. And now he had broken it, but he really hadn’t meant to, he truly had not expected the bow to be so fragile.
After all, Muria had long since grown accustomed to his exclusive weapon called Starfall, because no matter how much strength he used, that bow could perfectly carry his power.
As for making a bow, while he had never engaged in such detailed work before, he had seen the Elves from Xena Pus crafting wooden bows. He thought that if he wasted some material, he should be able to craft a powerful bow.
“No need!” Ultimately, Batu lowered his hand, his face dark as he replied. He swore, if anyone apart from his son and his wife from the Yikong People had ruined his beloved longbow, his fist would have certainly reached their face by now.
“Tsk, impressive! Truly worthy of the child who is said to conquer Mesha and become king!”
“Indeed impressive. At such a young age, to be able to not only surpass his father in strength but also to snap his father’s bow!”
“I see that Child Bale, even if he cannot conquer Mesha in the future, might well become the new Baghda of the Tunan Tribe! Glory will return to our Tunan Tribe!”
“It’s not just ‘might,’ with the kind of strength Bale has now, it’s certain. The last Baghda of our tribe, when he was as old as Ule, probably didn’t have such formidable strength!”
The surrounding Yikong People were abuzz with comments. Although they had initially come over for the excitement, when they saw the near-brutal strength Muria displayed, they were all astonished.
The Yikong People were well aware of the strength of Batu and the durability of his longbow; after all, their tribe wasn’t that large, and they were all quite familiar with each other.
Their own strength was similar to Batu’s, and the material of their longbows was not much different. If Muria could snap Batu’s longbow, it also meant that he could snap theirs too. Under these circumstances, no Yikong People would mock Batu. To mock Batu was to mock themselves.
“Cough, well, Father, could you take me hunting?” Muria coughed dryly and then tentatively asked. Although he knew that today’s hunting trip was already a no-go, there’s always a chance.
“Let’s talk about that after I have made another bow,” Batu replied somewhat irritably, glancing at his son and taking back his broken longbow. He turned around, huffing angrily as he walked away; he needed to find materials for crafting a new longbow.
However, as this father left the crowd, the corners of his mouth curled into an exaggerated curve. What did it matter if the bow was lost? He could simply make another one. Being able to show off his son’s excellence to his fellow tribesmen was enough for him.
“Must not laugh, must hold back!” Batu restrained the urge to laugh out loud and swiftly left the area. From today on, he would become the most envied father in the tribe because he had a son destined to become Baghda.
“So, what is a Baghda?” Listening to the discussions of the Yikong People around, a new question emerged in Muria’s mind and with it, some guesses.
From their expressions, the so-called Baghda must be a title for some especial kind of Yikong People, most likely those who could merge with the energy of the ores.
“Still lacking in common knowledge. It seems I must visit the Great Elder more often!” Muria sighed with a touch of helplessness and after idly chatting with the Yikong People who came to talk with him for a while, he excused himself to go to the Great Elder to read.
…
Three days later
“Ule, come hunting with me!” Batu found Muria with two longbows and tossed one to him.
“This bow?” The moment Muria grasped the bow, he felt its weight in his hand and couldn’t help but closely examine the longbow he held. It was black and shimmered with a metallic luster, yet it clearly had wood grain patterns and a thick patina, indicating it had existed for many years.
“This is a bow once used by a Baghda! I asked for it from the Great Elder. No one in our tribe can use it now, so it belongs to you for the time being. When you become a true Baghda, the bow will be yours.”
“Um… what is a Baghda?” Muria touched his nose, asking somewhat awkwardly.
“A Baghda is a warrior blessed by the Divine Tree! Ule, if you want to conquer the Mesha, then you must first become a Baghda!”
“Oh, I get it!” Muria, stroking the longbow that seemed to be made of metal in his hand, nodded thoughtfully.
“Come hunting with me now. I will teach you all my skills during the hunt!” After saying this, Batu coolly turned away and left.
Muria didn’t overthink it. He simply slung the black bow, almost as tall as him, over his shoulder and followed his father, heading out to a grassy field outside the tribe.
Then his eyes widened in surprise, because aside from his father, there were over thirty fully armed adult Yi Kong people on the grassy field.
This was what Batu had been doing over the past three days. Besides making a new longbow with the spare materials he prepared earlier, he had been asking around for favors.
He pleaded with the Great Elder, asking him to bring out the weapons left by the Baghda warriors of the tribe ahead of time for Muria to use. He asked his clansmen to join him in taking his son out hunting and to protect him in the outdoors.
“I’ll remember this!” Seeing this scene, Muria glanced at his father, pursed his lips, and then silently promised in his heart. “Cast me a papaya and I shall repay with jewels;” this was Muria’s fundamental principle of conduct.
“They will come hunting with us!” After bringing Muria here, Batu turned his head and announced to Ule.
“Little Ule, next, you will come hunting with us. We will keep you protected in the center, so don’t be afraid when you see terrifying monsters.”
“Afraid of what? We’ll protect him.”
“Little Ule, remember your father’s toil, for these past days he has been begging…”
“Hmph!” Batu gave a loud hum, then glared at the chatty Yi Kong person before turning to Muria to start explaining various precautions.
“Ule, before we go hunting, we need to do something very important first!” After giving his instructions, Batu mysteriously said to Muria.
“What’s that?” Muria asked curiously.
“You need to conquer your first companion first!” Following this declaration, Batu blew a sharp, hurried whistle, and the nearby adult Yi Kong people also emitted similar sounds.
Boom boom boom! Subsequently, Muria felt the ground begin to tremble slightly, as a group of rather large creatures were quickly approaching.
Finally, under Muria’s gaze, a group of sturdy creatures, four meters tall and almost five meters long, appeared before him. They resembled horses but were different from the four-legged warhorses Muria knew; these had six legs, with two pairs of forelimbs.
These creatures were covered with brilliant stripes and had armor-like hard shells on their shoulders and the back of their necks. Two flowing, tentacle-like biological tissues adorned the sides of their heads.
This herd of horse-like creatures, upon their arrival, spread out immediately, each one charging towards a Yi Kong person. In front of Batu’s father, a six-legged warhorse with blue-black fur also approached and affectionately nuzzled his palm before stopping.
“Get on!” Batu mounted the warhorse and then reached out his hand to Muria, who slightly quirkingly tugged at the corner of his mouth, took a few steps, seized his father’s hand, and was hoisted onto the horse’s back.
Seeing that Muria was secured in front of him, Batu let out a light exhale, squeezed the horse’s belly with his legs, and they charged ahead, while the rest of the Yi Kong people also mounted their six-legged warhorses and followed.
As they progressed, these Yi Kong people gradually circled around Batu, protecting Muria who was in front of Batu. This was their duty as adult Yi Kong people!
“I’m stronger than any of you!” Muria sighed, feeling somewhat reluctant as he became the focus of protection.
