Chapter 882: Chapter 882: The Choice of Human Nature
He estimated the approximate range of his perception; in the absence of any barriers, he could accurately perceive up to about two hundred meters. Beyond that range, his sense would become extremely vague, akin to how one could see to the furthest distance at a glance—although it could still be considered "seeing," there was no knowledge of the details.
If there were obstructions in between, the precise range would shrink further, especially in the case of completely enclosed spaces compared to the open outdoors or semi-enclosed walls, imposing more limitations. Not that he couldn’t discern whether there were people or moving objects—this was no problem after the evolution—but he couldn’t know everyone’s actions in the square with his eyes closed like he could now.
The ultimate limit should be one hundred fifty meters, but in reality, beyond one hundred meters, his judgments became less accurate.
In addition, he gained a new understanding of spatial barriers, such as walls.
Walls are solid, unpassable entities for humans, but for space itself, they are just another form of material distinct from itself. Humans and walls might be comparable in size but compared to space, be it people or obstacles, they are but tiny pebbles; space wraps around them and can penetrate through them, thus they can’t create an impediment.
The reason walls posed a barrier to the current Xu Huo was simply because he too was still just a pebble.
A wooden carving appeared in his hand; Xu Huo tried to feel the space’s envelopment over it, attempting to crush the carving from the outside. It was then that he sensed an unusual aura approaching from ahead. With a flip of his hand, an Air Barrier shielded in front of him, and a needle-sized object fell to the ground.
He looked up, pinpointing the player sneaking moves behind the scenes.
The other player was pretending to doze off with arms crossed. Sensing Xu Huo’s gaze, he turned his head nonchalantly, as if Xu Huo were the initiator of the provocation.
Xu Huo, known for his temperance, responded with a faint smile—letting the matter slide. The wooden carving he was twisting split in two at the sound, breaking in the middle.
He had failed.
But it was expected and he did not feel particularly disappointed.
Daylight arrived quickly.
The host returned to the airspace above the square, his excitement palpable, "Ladies and gentlemen, our show has now reached an intense phase. You can see that only seventy-seven guests remain inside Friendship Park. Having gone through tiredness, betrayal, and danger, I believe those who remain have gained a deeper understanding of friendship and a keener anticipation."
"Let’s not delay our guests’ pursuit of friendship any longer. I declare that today’s Tri-color Confrontation Game is now officially underway!"
Ringing cheers erupted from outside the arena; there were even hearable shouts for the players’ numbers in the square.
"I know everyone is excited—after all, today we are about to witness the birth of friendship," the host continued. "To ensure that our audience and guests both enjoy to the fullest, the ’All’s Well With You and Me’ show team has revised the rules of the confrontation game. Today’s teams will include one member chosen at random, and the other selected by the initially drawn guest from those volunteering to team up."
"Surely, after two days of interaction, an odd magnetic field must have developed between friends. Everyone here is eager to see whether the friends picked out will bring about true friendship!"
"Let’s start with guest number 18!"
Guest number 18 was the one who had killed Xu Huo’s teammate, player number 64. As he stood before the large screen, the host asked, "Is there any guest willing to become the friend of guest number 18?"
No one stepped forward voluntarily.
Player number 18 had chosen a black ball in the first round, and after the first teammate’s death, he ended up with teammates again in both the second and third rounds without ever undertaking a mission, safely making it to this point.
Such odds couldn’t be entirely due to luck; the likelihood of a Prop affecting the random outcome was much higher, meaning partnering up with him now would undoubtedly result in a black ball mission—a fool’s choice.
"Ha ha! It seems that no one wants to become friends with guest number 18. Since guest number 18 has lost the right to actively choose a friend, our show team will have to pick someone at random... Congratulations to guest number 95!"
Guest number 95 was an ordinary person who immediately reached out towards the black ball as he stepped forward. However, before he could touch it, the ground where he and the big screen stood began to sink.
Amidst guest number 95’s screams of terror, a projection from another angle appeared in the space above the square. They sank into a clear body of water, encased in a transparent large box, divided in half by the central big screen. They couldn’t see each other, but they could look back at rows of mutated giant fish trapped behind glass, including the Man-Eating Sharks Xu Huo had previously encountered.
With the central big screen as the boundary, the glass enclosures on both sides, completely suspended in water, maintained a semi-circular formation at a ten-meter distance around the center, making the people trapped inside visible from any direction. Seeing their prey, these giant fish became aggressive, simultaneously ramming into the transparent glass in front of them.
"What you see now is the unique specialty of Sea World: the frenzied Giant-sized Man-Eating Shark, the Giant-toothed Octopus that prefers to strangle its prey before slowly consuming it, the Gigantic-headed Fish with a thirst for blood exceeding that for flesh... and of course, our most popular Peach Heart Squid. The wounds it bites are shaped like a peach heart, and it especially loves to feed on human hearts, so we regard it as a symbol of love!" the host said after introducing the "local specialties."
"The task for the fourth round of the confrontation game is transparent. Choosing the white ball mission, we will release a Rank-C fish, like the Gigantic-headed Fish. For the yellow ball mission, we’ll release a Rank-B fish, such as the Peach Heart Squid or Man-Eating Shark. And if it’s a black ball mission, we will randomly release two or more types of fish without limiting the quantity."
"To ensure fairness, the range of the players’ activities will be reduced to a quarter of its original size."
As he spoke, the glass walls on both sides of player number 18 began to move inward, shrinking his available space into a narrow rectangle. If the glass door behind opened, larger predator fish could easily trap a person inside. If the player couldn’t escape quickly or break the glass, the risk would increase exponentially.
"Now, let us see the choice of human nature!"
As his words fell, the large screen separating player number 18 from number 95 turned transparent, and their eyes met. Clutching his backpack tightly, which then fell, guest number 95 knelt down pleadingly before player number 18, begging, "Please give me a way out. Even if the water comes in, I’ll drown... I don’t want to die. You’re a player and so skilled; you must be able to deal with these mutant fish. Please help me!"
