Chapter 812 Orbital Storm
Chapter 812: Chapter 812 Orbital Storm
The atmosphere on the train during the day was quite good, but after Xu Huo and Yan Jiayu returned from their meal, the middle-aged woman who had been actively promoting her goods also came back to the carriage, though with a slight bruise at the corner of her mouth, evidently from a rebuff in another carriage.
Injuries from player encounters were common and the middle-aged woman didn’t care how others viewed her, cheerfully joining Yan Jiayu to share some food.
Yan Jiayu was not stingy and even struck up a conversation with her, "Do you only do business on the train?"
"Sometimes I do it in instances too," the middle-aged woman said. "I can’t help it, I was in sales before I became a player, this is all I know. I make a little money for potions, or else I find friendly-looking players willing to take me along, otherwise I’d have died in the game a long time ago."
"You must have met all nice people then," Yan Jiayu said with a smile.
The middle-aged woman nodded, "Exactly, that’s why I say there are still many good people in the world. You’re also very kind, if it wasn’t for you, I might have gone hungry today."
"Can’t even afford a bowl of rice?" The curly-haired female player ahead turned back and said, "You just made quite a few sales."
The middle-aged woman sighed, "Thin profit, high turnover. Besides, I have a family to support, skipping a meal or two is nothing."
The other players in the carriage didn’t show much sympathy, merely empathizing, while Yan Jiayu looked at her pitifully, "You really are unfortunate."
The middle-aged woman responded with a smile.
However, Yan Jiayu’s pity was just that; after they finished the snacks, she prepared to rest, leaving the middle-aged woman to find another seat.
Yan Jiayu then padded her chair with a sleeping bag and started to sleep.
Most players chose to rest in the afternoon, so it wasn’t long before the carriage quieted down, except for one woman fervently knitting. Everyone else was resting with their eyes closed, the middle-aged woman, even less particular, found a bag, put it on the floor, and lay down in the aisle.
The journey was uneventful until dinner time, when Xu Huo was awakened by the light. He opened his eyes and saw that the train was passing through a clear expanse of water, its mirror-like surface reflecting the moving prism of lights, yet there was no color in the sky, as if the light wasn’t cast from above but emanating from within the water.
Yan Jiayu was already awake, peering out the window and turned to ask Xu Huo, "What is this light?"
Xu Huo shook his head.
"It’s called ’fish light’," said an elder leaning on a cane who had also approached the window, his face full of wonder. "It appears to be a projection of the aurora, but it is actually emitted by a peculiar fish that thrives in barren regions."
"These fish are transparent when they are idle; only the spine connected to their head is gray. Once they start moving, the gray material in the spine is immediately distributed throughout their body, reacting to create a splendid array of colors."
"Since they only appear in some unstable spaces, they are rare. We are fortunate to see them today."
"What is the name of this fish?" Yan Jiayu asked. "Someone must have researched them. Surely someone has caught them?"
The elder chuckled, "It’s called the Gray Fish."
"Why give such a beautiful fish such a name?" asked the curly-haired female player.
"Because anyone who encounters this fish, once they learn about its habits, will pray that it stays asleep," the elder slightly turned his head. "Look ahead."
The people in the carriage crowded by the window and saw a patch of gray clouds forming in the sky ahead.
Many recognized the Gray Fish, but several players recognized the gray clouds too and said with grim faces, "Is there a tempest coming?"
Xu Huo had encountered a thunderstorm before.
"This is just our luck," the middle-aged woman said grimly. "It’s rare for the train tracks to be near anything dangerous."
Since the train traveled through multiple spaces, including many chaotic zones, the tracks were laid where mishaps were least likely, and travel times were chosen accordingly, so the space near the train tracks was mostly beautiful.
If they were unlucky enough to encounter unusual weather, not only would it cause delays, but it could also lead to the destruction of the train and loss of life.
"Old man, what should we do in this situation?" Yan Jiayu asked the elder.
The elder was nonchalant, "Sit down, eat well, drink well, and then leave it to fate."
Others couldn’t help but look sideways, but the elder calmly explained, "If the nearby space is relatively stable, even if the train is overturned, we might still be able to wait it out nearby. Just before, we encountered the Gray Fish, which only moves when it senses changes in the weather. I mentioned earlier, they thrive in harsh conditions. It’s uncertain if the space outside can maintain stability for long, and whether we could even breathe outside, so other than waiting for the storm to pass, there’s no other option."
Xu Huo estimated the distance to the front clouds, and then said to Yan Jiayu, "Let’s go to the front carriage.
Yan Jiayu immediately followed him without asking questions while other players looked at each other in confusion. The middle-aged woman wondered aloud, "Do they think the front of the train will be safer? This demonic wind isn’t like a normal storm. If it really hits us there, the front is the first to go!"
However, Xu Huo and Yan Jiayu had already left.
Other players waited a moment before the elder and an injured player were the first to leave; their departure prompted others to follow suit gradually, and players from the rear carriages followed them upon seeing the others leave.
Xu Huo wasn’t heading to the front of the train; the middle-aged woman was right. The storms near the tracks weren’t like normal storms; generally, the intensity of a storm diminishes near its edges, but storms on the tracks are uniform. No matter where the storm originated, once it reached the tracks, the impact was the same.
The clouds ahead completely covered the track area; there was no dodging it. From its moving speed and appearance, it was close to the biggest natural disaster one could encounter on these tracks—a Dimensional Storm.
Simply put, a Dimensional Storm is a small spatial collapse caused by unstable connections between spaces or ruptures in the space-time continuum as the train crosses dimensions. Like stars constantly being born and destroyed in the universe, these spaces are also active, and their collapse or reorganization is unpredictable. According to the Game Government, this is considered a travel accident.
Xu Huo had previously seen maintenance records related to this in Zone 011. He had also watched videos of storms. No matter the size of a Dimensional Storm, once it covered the track area, the tracks and the train would almost always be damaged beyond immediate repair. However, the fact that tracks were laid here indicated relative safety, and as long as the spaces on both sides of the tracks weren’t completely destroyed, staying inside the train could save their lives!
