Chapter 748: Chapter 748 Two Types of Footsteps
After all, they were outnumbered. According to Xu Huo, it would take too long to start from scratch to understand the Mirror Hotel, especially since the outside was so dangerous—it wasn’t wise to go it alone.
Soon, Peng Fengnian’s group also came up with some results—aside from Peng Fengnian and the young man, there were two other players, a male and a female.
Peng Fengnian didn’t look too pleased, and introduced his companions to Xu Huo with a bit of emotion.
The young man was named Sun Bo, while the other two, the male was Lin Zhenhuai and the female was Gao Xiaoyue.
Sun Bo’s disdain for Xu Huo and his group was evident on his face as he didn’t even bother to greet them, while Lin Zhenhuai and Gao Xiaoyue took a good look at Xu Huo. Lin Zhenhuai, a middle-aged man who seemed easy to talk to, shook hands with Xu Huo and said, "I’ve heard so much about you. When Peng Fengnian mentioned Brother Yu, I wondered what kind of person he was. I didn’t expect you to be so young. Impressive!"
"Whether we can escape alive or not will depend on Brother Yu. Although we entered early, we haven’t touched the key elements, and we can only see things that are out in the open. Brother Yu, please feel free to ask, and we will tell you everything we know."
The words were nice, and Xu Huo politely replied with a few sentences before moving on to the main topic.
First were the footsteps. Whether they were outside or in the Mirror Hotel, they could only hear sounds at night—this was a conclusion they reached after days and nights of being awake.
But apart from the sound, they got nothing; there was absolutely no trace on the ground.
"We’ve experimented with items, and there absolutely isn’t anything exceedingly light and invisible," Peng Fengnian stressed.
"What item did you use for the test?" Xu Huo asked.
"You want to see our item?" Sun Bo asked, his face cold. "What exactly do you want to know?"
"Do you want to get out?" Xu Huo’s demeanor changed from the friendly one he had when he met "friends," his gaze turning sharp as he looked at him. "If you want to leave, then shut up."
"You..." Sun Bo was infuriated, but Lin Zhenhuai and Gao Xiaoyue blocked him from both sides, and Lin Zhenhuai gave him a meaningful look before turning to say, "Brother Yu, it’s not that my companion is sensitive, but if you want to check the item, it means you don’t trust us. I can assure you that the item can detect even a feather."
They didn’t say what the item was, nor whose item it was—they were being very cautious.
Xu Huo turned to look at Peng Fengnian and after seeing him nod, he continued, "All right then, let’s continue our discussion."
The next issue was the problem of the timing of the footsteps.
Peng Fengnian confirmed that they followed the footsteps after hearing them, which was the opposite of the footsteps following them from outside.
"That doesn’t make sense," Yu Guangnan expressed his doubts. "If you caught up to the footsteps and you thought they were made by players entering the Corpse-Hiding Hotel, why did you keep following behind?"
"We didn’t just follow behind; we’ve tried everything we could," said Gao Xiaoyue. "But it feels like, apart from the sound, the person moving is in a completely different space that we cannot touch."
Xiao Ling and Yu Guangnan exchanged glances. This was different from the situation outside. The footsteps they encountered had always followed behind them.
"Does this mean that the footsteps encountered inside and outside are not from the ’other side’ as we each believed?" Xiao Ling said.
"That’s possible," Xu Huo thought of something else. The real Corpse-Hiding Hotel and this Mirror Hotel that they entered after hearing the footsteps might be two different spaces. Assuming this is true, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a third "space."
"It might just be some special item," said Sun Bo. "It has nothing to do with entering the Mirror Hotel."
"Whether you’re saying this out of simplicity or just to contradict us," Xu Huo’s expression darkened slightly, "if you want to continue wasting time with meaningless words, I suggest you keep your mouth shut."
Sun Bo was angry. "Mr. Yu, don’t get too cocky. Do you really think you can leave this place all by yourself?"
"Then what are you doing here?" Xu Huo countered.
Sun Bo was at a loss for words. Gao Xiaoyue grabbed his arm, "Say less, this is a decision we all made."
Sun Bo, seeing that his companions didn’t stand with him, irritably shook off Gao Xiaoyue’s hand and sat to one side with arms crossed, his expression mockingly saying, "as you wish."
The exchange of details resumed.
"When you first came in, you heard the footsteps from behind, right? Were there any instances of footsteps appearing simultaneously when you spread out?" Xu Huo asked.
This was an important question. In fact, it was a conclusion sorted out by Peng Fengnian and the others only after everyone had entered. Three people in their team had recorded the start times of several occurrences of footsteps before moving to the Mirror Hotel, and the times did not match.
However, because they didn’t spread out very much, the interval between the footsteps wasn’t very important—if they had been distributed on different floors, then from the interval of each occurrence of footsteps, they could have roughly grasped the movement pattern of the footsteps. For example, if the footsteps appeared behind each person whether the interval would be affected by the distance between the two individuals. If the interval was short but the distance was long, this would indicate that the footsteps did not move like normal human walking. But if both the distance and interval were long, then the footsteps could be caused by a "person," even if not a real one, there would be some similarity.
"Aside from these three, others either didn’t pay attention to the time or they were killed by that monster before we could meet up," Peng Fengnian said regretfully, pausing before asking, "Is this detail very important?"
"Not particularly," Xu Huo replied. "’Footsteps’ might not follow every player; they might only appear where players congregate, or it might simply select targets randomly."
"But since you and your companions are all here, it means that ’footsteps’ will eventually find every player, sooner or later."
"This is sufficient to draw a conclusion, which is that the footsteps are related to entering the Mirror Hotel."
"We thought the same, so we didn’t care whether the footsteps were traps of the Corpse-Hiding Hotel or made by other players; we would actively follow them," said Peng Fengnian.
"Did you encounter other players before? Did their walking routes overlap with the places you heard the footsteps?" Xu Huo asked.
"Six people came in after us, three of whom we have run into; the places and times all match up."
"Could it be that what we heard outside was really the footsteps of the Mirror Hotel?" Yu Guangnan asked.
"Do you think it’s possible to wander around in the Mirror Hotel like a vegetable market?" Xiao Ling gave him a look.
"That’s strange," Yu Guangnan said puzzledly. "If the footsteps were made by players, then Peng Fengnian and his group should not have heard them before they came in. If not, why would the footsteps they heard later match up with other players?"
In summary, the Corpse-Hiding Hotel and the apparent ’footsteps’ heard in the hotel don’t match up in certain aspects.
