Chapter 743: Chapter 743: Disappeared in the Bathroom
"We were one of the first groups to come in; the players before us had almost all died. It was only today that the numbers started to pick up, so it’s unlikely that anyone has found the artifacts in the instance," Long Aotian said.
Xu Huo examined his expression, which suggested that Xiao Ling and another presumably had already informed him about the time traps in the instance.
"How did you end up running into each other?" he asked.
Long Aotian scratched his head, "Don’t get me started. I was unlucky and got trapped by a group that died earlier. It took a hell of an effort to get out, and just then I ran into Xiao Ling and the others, so we decided to stick together."
"Liu Chengyi is probably dead; he was just caught when I was running away."
Xu Huo reckoned the players he had met coming out of the psychotherapy room were of the same lot as the ones encountered before, and the reason that leader had been relentlessly pursuing him was most likely because he coveted the artifact in his possession.
"Let’s get back to the topic at hand," Xiao Ling said. "If the artifacts really were taken away by players, would they be able to kill all the incoming players?"
"Whether they can wipe everyone out is another matter, but if they’re only after players, they don’t need to go through the trouble of clearing the instance. They can just wait," Long Aotian said. "Sooner or later, they’ll catch someone slipping."
It becomes unsafe in all the major venues by night. Whether players are affected or fleeing from the venues, they are at a disadvantage compared to those who have not exhausted any resources.
"So are they or are they not ticket holders?" Yu Guangnan couldn’t help asking. "The riddle of the Sphinx might be an instance that never ends."
If they’re not using tickets, it means they might never be able to leave from the moment they entered.
"These people are aware of the high-level artifacts in the instance, they’re likely not oblivious to the instance’s mechanisms. Best-case scenario, there’s a solution to the time traps in the instance, or they’re using tickets and have a thorough preunderstanding of this instance," Xu Huo said.
"So you’re saying they might actually lead us through to complete the instance?" Xiao Ling narrowed her eyes, her intentions clear to anyone with a discerning eye.
"That’s just speculation. I’m not willing to take that risk," Xu Huo said. "With the numerous venues, it’s easy to avoid them, and five people can’t search everywhere."
Long Aotian agreed with him. "Venues are a bit safer."
Xiao Ling hesitated briefly then said, "Let’s take this time to search the hotel then."
As she was about to exit through the window, Xu Huo stopped her, "Use the stairs."
At that moment, Yu Guangnan also noticed players standing outside the door of the venue across them and frowned. "They probably have people in front and back. Our position will be exposed as soon as we show ourselves."
It was unclear what those people had planned, but there was no one on the stairs. Yet, when Long Aotian and Yu Guangnan stepped on them, the cement and metal stairs started moving like an escalator, causing them to uncontrollably fall on the steps and slide downwards rapidly.
Xu Huo and Xiao Ling caught each of them, and looking through the gaps in the stairs down, indeed, they saw shadows moving swiftly below!
Dodging several darts that were shot out, Xu Huo melted the metal in the nearby stairs, breaking off the metal-depleted steps, and Long Aotian and the others no longer lay rigid on the ground like corpses. As they leaped up from the gap, Yu Guangnan pulled out a flask, turning it over and spilling its contents which naturally flowed down the stairs.
Ignoring the commotion downstairs, the four pressed against the wall and climbed up several floors before they slipped into a hotel room for safety. They decided not to split up, instead choosing a room in the middle to hide in.
The room was a small suite facing the Beheaded Cemetery, with two rooms and a living room, not very spacious for four people to move around.
Xu Huo stood at the door, Xiao Ling went to the window, while Yu Guangnan and Long Aotian began inspecting the room’s decor. Half a minute later, they all withdrew their gazes, and after Xu Huo nodded, the other three relaxed a little.
"There are only three people tracking us, and two others are stationed in front and behind the hotel," Xiao Ling said. "Their separation is our chance."
Assuring that the remaining three were inside the hotel, they could break through from front to back.
Xu Huo had no intention of leaving. The Corpse-Hiding Hotel was one of the tallest buildings in Museum City, sprawled over a large area with many rooms. It was more bewildering than most venues. Unless those following them had the energy and ability to dismantle every floor, this was essentially a game of hide and seek.
The opposition was fierce, and there was no need to engage in a head-on clash and brawl. Given enough time, opportunities would arise.
"It’s getting dark," he said.
"The hotel isn’t safe either," Xiao Ling’s brow furrowed.
"Fortunately, the hotel isn’t sealed off. If things go south, we can escape," Long Aotian looked at Xu Huo.
Xu Huo was thinking about the three wax figures from the day before, wondering if they had entered the hotel.
As night fell, most of the lights in the hotel automatically turned off, leaving only a small desk lamp in their room. The room suddenly darkened, and various sounds emerged nearby – faint TV noises, music, children running in rooms, adults walking, the movement of chairs, and the use of water and toilets.
"I’m not hallucinating, am I?" Long Aotian shivered. "I kind of need to use the bathroom."
"In any horror or suspense movie, going to the bathroom alone is the trigger point for death," Xiao Ling glanced at him. "Aren’t you afraid of secret rooms or hidden passages in the restroom, where you might enter and never come out again?"
"I guess that’s how the player with Liu Chengyi disappeared," Yu Guangnan added.
Sensible people know not to split up, but players still vanished, which spoke volumes.
"You’re no different, right in the cemetery, so open and exposed," Long Aotian was far from daunted and said, "I’ll go first. If anything happens, I’ll shout for you... If something really does happen, it could be a breakthrough. Maybe it will complete our progress here."
After saying this, he really went to the bathroom and the sound of water flowed from the unlocked room, but soon Long Aotian returned, wiping his hands and saying, "Disappointed you, huh? Nothing happened."
"I’ll go for a moment," Yu Guangnan went into the bathroom.
Three minutes passed and he had not come back. Xiao Ling immediately rushed to kick down the door, but unfortunately, the bathroom was empty.
She looked around, "He didn’t leave any clues."
"There shouldn’t be any secret passages in the bathroom," Long Aotian said. "We’ve checked earlier, we even went over the mirror."
In fact, aside from the ventilation duct above, there indeed were no secret spaces in the room, so at first glance, Xu Huo noticed the window next to them.
Yes, the rooms of this hotel, even the bathrooms, had their own separate windows.
Xiao Ling sent a mechanical bee small enough to fit through the crack. It crawled around outside, and as soon as it did, the exterior view was transmitted to her phone screen. As the view shifted, all three of them saw a face flash by on the edge of the screen.
