Chapter 720: Chapter 720 The Clues that are Hard to Distinguish Between True and False
No matter the instance, the risk always multiplies at night, and they had not even figured out the basic gameplay of the Wax Figure Gallery; it would be best not to linger here.
For different reasons, both Jie Ling and Bai Wenxian agreed to leave, and this time they did not delay, directly using props to destroy the walls of the Wax Figure Gallery.
Unfortunately, just like underground, the props’ attacks were ineffective against the Wax Figure Gallery, at least in terms of the exterior walls.
"Hee hee!" The laughter of a child once again came from ahead, as if luring them forward.
"What’s actually going on? You can’t leave once you come in?" Jie Ling was both frightened and angry, worried that the ghost stories told by the players would become real under the instance’s powers.
"Let’s sort this out," Xu Huo said. "When you came out, there were two wax figures in the lounge, one holding a clue envelope, so you think either Xu Ruosi or Long Aotian got the clue as well."
"I think it was Xu Ruosi," Jie Ling said. "Long Aotian’s story was quite ordinary."
"Let’s not talk about the quality of his story for now," Xu Huo continued. "Among the Strange Tale events we encountered after coming out, none matched Long Aotian’s story."
"Could it be that the wax figures related to the story only appear after the Strange Tale challenge is successful?" Jie Ling thought for a moment and said, "What kind of strange mode is this? Is it considered a reward to have the ghosts from your own story come to kill you?"
"When I came out, I broke the rules, and there were no clue-bearing wax figures, but the red-dress lady showed up as well," Bai Wenxian said. "This shows that there is no corresponding relationship between the success of the Strange Tale challenge and the events inside the Wax Figure Gallery."
"You also saw the lady in the red dress?" Xu Huo looked at him. "Where?"
"Over there by the entrance," Bai Wenxian said. "When I left alone."
"When you left, I also saw the lady in the red dress once," Xu Huo pondered. "Why hasn’t the ghost from Long Aotian’s story appeared?"
If the success of the Strange Tale challenge really doesn’t correlate with the eerie events in the Wax Figure Gallery, the sole absence of the ghost from Long Aotian’s story becoming real is quite odd.
"Perhaps the ghost in Long Aotian’s story is not iconic," Bai Wenxian said. "A ghost from a salt field can’t exactly perform a salt-farming show on the spot."
"One less is definitely better than one more," Jie Ling said. "Moreover, the current problem doesn’t lie in the quantity of the strange occurrences."
"We need to find a way out. We have to consider even the most trivial clues," Xu Huo said. "The absence of the ghost from Long Aotian’s story could also be due to the limited capabilities of the Wax Figure Gallery; we have never seen multiple ghosts from the stories appear at the same time."
"You mean, it doesn’t mean they can’t appear at the same time!" Jie Ling’s voice rose sharply.
"I can’t rule out that possibility," Xu Huo thought for a moment. "Since we can’t get out, let’s find Xu Ruosi and Long Aotian first."
It was very likely that those two had fallen into a trap. Jie Ling said skeptically, "Could they have gone into the cremation furnace?"
"There are no bones in the cremation furnace," said Xu Huo. Time also did not permit that. "Don’t you have a prop that detects soil attributes? Can you try it on the wall?"
He looked at Bai Wenxian, who said, "This prop can only be used under certain conditions, and I’m not sure if it can detect whether there are bodies behind the wall."
As he spoke, he took the prop out, made a small hole in the wall, and inserted one end of the prop; there was no reaction.
Xu Huo also tried his Appraisal Fork, to no avail on the wall.
"Even if someone died, they shouldn’t have been sealed inside the wall," Jie Ling said. "The size of the room hasn’t changed compared to before, and the exterior walls can’t even be damaged by props, so the likelihood of hiding a corpse is also not great."
"Could it be that the Wax Figure Gallery has moved the bodies using the elevator?" Bai Wenxian speculated, "Like the two bodies above the Strange Tale Room."
"The space available for movement on both sides should not be large," Xu Huo said. "I’ll go back and check. You two keep watch at the main entrance. Even if we can’t find the bodies, splitting up might reveal something different about the Wax Figure Gallery."
"Wait, I’ll come with you," Jie Ling hastily said.
Xu Huo looked at Bai Wenxian, who shrugged, "I don’t mind."
Xu Huo and Jie Ling returned to the Strange Tale Room. Xu Huo entered the Strange Tale Room first and found a new spot to sit down.
"Why are you..." Jie Ling watched him in astonishment, but at that moment, the entire room began to sink again, the lights went out, and the wax figures lit up once more.
"I’m going to tell a story about the Human Skin Ghost," Xu Huo said as he sat beside the flickering flames, with his hands crossed on the table.
Jie Ling looked at him, speechless and shocked. "Aren’t there enough Strange Tales in the Wax Figure Gallery already?"
Xu Huo asked his lone audience to sit down and then placed the "Homologous Locator" on the table. He watched the number and position of the items displayed before starting his spontaneously fabricated tale about the "Human Skin Ghost."
Jie Ling, sitting across from him, listened to his story with a trembling face. "Is the story you told true?"
"Fake," Xu Huo said as his gaze scanned the Homologous Locator. Once the room rose and stopped, he was the first to leave his seat.
After leaving the Strange Tale Chamber, the lounge was dark, but this was not a problem for him.
The entire lounge was empty; no wax figure providing clues appeared, and Bai Wenxian did not come back.
Xu Huo signaled for Jie Ling to hand him the envelope and letter again.
"This clue is probably just a scare tactic like the story I told," Jie Ling said. "There’s no such doll in the Wax Figure Gallery either."
Xu Huo had suspected the clue was fake, but now he was somewhat convinced it was real.
When he and Bai Wenxian left, there were no wax figures outside; this time he told a story alone, and Jie Ling followed along, breaking the rules again, and there were no wax figures outside either. This strongly suggested that the Strange Tale Chamber was indeed handing out clues based on the stories told by guests.
Regardless of what the clue pointed to, the Wax Figure Gallery and the Strange Tale Chamber were not simply a player slaughterhouse; they had a certain operational mechanism.
The Wax Figure Gallery was currently sealed, and there should be a way out of course.
The first thing Xu Huo thought of were the requirements of the Strange Tales at Night, where each guest had to tell a qualified story. It didn’t matter whether the story was deemed qualified or not, because even if it was, there was only a fifty percent chance of getting a clue. That is to say, as long as the room ascended, the task of "telling a Strange Tale" was completed.
Now that he had filled in his story, it was time to see if the Wax Figure Gallery would open.
"Keep it safe," he handed the letter back to Jie Ling. "Let’s go find Bai Wenxian."
The two entered the Wax Figure Gallery and made their way to the front door, hacking through several ghostly wax figures, to find Bai Wenxian indeed still waiting at the entrance. Upon seeing them, he said, "Good timing coming back, the Wax Figure Gallery has changed."
