Chapter 716: The Twins in the Slag Pit

Chapter 716: Chapter 716: The Twins in the Slag Pit

"The salt pan had people working through the night, and my friend’s maternal uncle found it strange. With so many people around, what was there to guard? Without a second thought, he decided to leave."

"But at that moment, someone emerged from the side of the salt pan and waved at him from a distance."

"My friend’s maternal uncle thought he had been seen, so he waved back. To his surprise, the person on the other side signaled for him to come down."

"The uncle walked down the slope for two steps but then thought that even if he went there, it would be pointless. He might even get roped into working, so he pretended not to see and turned back."

"After he returned, he discovered that the door to his house was locked, so he climbed through a hole in the wall to sleep in the attic. His family and that relative went to the salt pan overnight and didn’t find anyone until dawn when they returned home. The family cried so loudly that my friend’s maternal uncle woke up and came downstairs. They were shocked and asked him if he was a person or a ghost."

"Then my friend’s maternal uncle recounted what had happened, and the relatives who went to look for him also went to the salt pan but didn’t see the person he mentioned."

"It was only then that my friend’s maternal uncle realized that the people he had seen working at the salt pan that night were wearing clothes from decades past, which no one wears anymore. And there had been a major incident at that salt pan years ago where all the workers were killed. Perhaps what my friend’s maternal uncle saw were the lost souls of those who had worked there before."

Long Aotian finished his story and looked at the others, "How was my story?"

Xu Huo and the others were silent for a moment before Jie Ling said, "It’s a story where laziness can save your life."

With her remark, the eerie atmosphere that had just started to build instantly disappeared. Long Aotian casually put his feet up on the table, "I think my story is better than Xu Ruosi’s. The whole salt pan was filled with ghosts, hey, wouldn’t you be scared if you were in their shoes?"

Whether they were scared or not was unclear, but the room began to rise again.

Long Aotian’s story was mediocre, and his narration wasn’t as compelling as Xu Ruosi’s. Jie Ling wasn’t scared at all. Therefore, when the room returned to the ground, the others barely even looked at him and immediately started the next round.

The third story was told by Jie Ling.

"The incident happened when my mother was a child. She was the youngest in the family, with several older brothers, so everyone doted on her and let her roam the village and hills freely."

"One day, she and a few children from the village went to pick wildflowers and stumbled upon Slag Pit when they heard strange noises."

"Back then, garbage transportation wasn’t widespread, so some villages would dig holes in the hillside, resembling wells, to dispose of waste or unwanted items. The inside of these holes was generally spacious, and looking inside would sometimes give people the creeps. Apart from dumping garbage, adults rarely went there, so the children were quite afraid of it."

"My mother was braver back then, and egged on by her friends, she ran up to the edge of Slag Pit to see what was making the noise inside."

"She didn’t see anything, but the other children said that a couple of years prior, twin boys from the village had accidentally fallen into the pit and died. They half-worried, half-excitedly speculated that it might be the twins playing down there."

"The group of children scattered in all directions, and my mother wanted to run too, but she slipped and accidentally fell into Slag Pit."

"Because in the past two years, a lot of trash had been dumped, forming a slope; my mother didn’t get hurt when she fell, but all the other kids ran far away. No one responded to her cries for help, and remembering that the twins died there, she was so frightened and exhausted that she gradually fell into a deep sleep," she said.

"The children who were with her returned to the village, and that was when my grandmother realized she hadn’t come back. She went door-to-door asking until she learned they had gone to the Slag Pit. She gathered people to search along the way, and finally, they found my mother in the pit."

"The day my mother came back, she started to have a fever. Despite medication and injections, she remained unconscious. Someone in the village suggested seeking a ’god-man’ to take a look."

"In my hometown, those who tell fortunes, cast divinations, and deal with spirits are called ’god-men.’ As soon as this person arrived, he said my mother was in a bad state. After feeding her some special liquid, she suddenly woke up for a moment and told my grandmother that the twin brothers were standing hand-in-hand on her bed, asking her to play with them..."

Jie Ling herself couldn’t help swallowing hard, steadying herself before continuing, "My grandmother was terrified. After my mother fell asleep again, the god-man prepared some tools, and instructed my grandmother to take toys from the house to the spot where the twins had died and burn spirit money to send them off."

"My grandmother did as told. Whether it was psychological or something else, while burning the papers, she thought she heard children’s laughter. She was scared too, and as soon as she finished burning the papers, she hurried home."

"The rituals for my mother were completed, and the god-man assured my grandmother that she would be fine by the next day."

"My grandmother spent a sleepless night, staying by my mother’s side the whole time. Sure enough, when dawn came the next day, my mother woke up, but she couldn’t remember anything about the twins wanting to play with her. My grandmother, fearing she would fall ill again, forbade the family from ever mentioning it and also prohibited my mother from returning to the woods."

"However, it was said that from time to time, people still heard noises from the Slag Pit, but nobody dared to go near it again, and eventually, it was abandoned."

Jie Ling took a deep breath, "My story is over."

Xu Huo noticed her reddened eyes and said, "In a dumpsite, it wouldn’t be strange to have rats and noises."

"Your mother might have had hallucinations after hearing rumors and becoming ill. Whether those twins really died at the Slag Pit is uncertain."

Jie Ling looked at him in surprise, "Why do you say that?"

"If two kids really died there, the pit would have been filled in a long time ago," he said, without needing any specific analysis. Whether because it felt ominous or just to eliminate any danger, if children died inside it, the obvious choice would be to flatten the Slag Pit."

Bai Wenxian nodded in agreement, "You said the Slag Pit’s opening is like a well, but the actual depth probably doesn’t exceed ten meters, otherwise excavating the perimeter would be pointless."

"Your villagers must have dogs and pigs, right? So there wouldn’t be much kitchen waste dumped there. It’s mostly stuff like plastic products and old clothes that shouldn’t be thrown away haphazardly—it’s like a soft cushion. It’s incredibly unlikely that two kids could fall in there and both die."

"Your mom fell in and didn’t even have external injuries."

Jie Ling hesitated for a moment, "What you say makes sense... After your analysis, I’m not that scared anymore."

The room began to rise, and as they were leaving, she said, "I’ll wait outside with the clue. Hurry up and come out."
