Chapter 688 The True Sifang Palace City

Chapter 688: Chapter 688 The True Sifang Palace City

The corpses running amok initially appeared horrifying, but in reality, they possessed little killing power. Many even split in two halfway through their sprint due to their upper bodies being too decayed. However, their sheer number was daunting. After resisting for a while, the players gave up on the idea of annihilating the horde of corpses, letting the bodies pass by while they took the opportunity to move closer to the Eye Sacrifice.

Xu Huo slowed down his pace, kicking away the thronging corpses around him as he watched the two strongest players rushing forward.

Though they had covered their faces and most of their bodies with Defense Props, when one of them got within five meters of the wooden eye, he unexpectedly removed his own Defense Prop. Not only that, but he also used his prop to open up the other player’s Defense Prop, causing the other, who was still resisting, to instantly fall into the same numb stiffness.

The players who saw this hurriedly backed away.

"Without looking, without being touched by the red light, you still can’t avoid the power of the Eye Sacrifice within a certain distance!" Yi Pei said as she retreated, "Could it be because the intensity of the mental influence in the instance is increasing? Or is it because with so many eyes together, their effect is doubled?"

The horde of corpses that had run out earlier had already passed by the players. They were all heading in the same direction, including the living ones, without considering the players as their targets.

The sound of drums and water was coming from the direction of the pond, and it seemed that the destination of the Eye Sacrifice procession was also there.

"Great, with everyone heading to the pond, the town is safe!" Wei Xian couldn’t wait to step aside, trying to keep a distance from the advancing procession.

Apart from the two players who had made eye contact with the Eye Sacrifice, all other players successfully broke away from the group and hid in the forest, watching as thousands of living and dead people passed by them. Only after all the wooden eyes used for tribute had passed did they finally breathe a sigh of relief.

"At least the town is safe for now, we..."

Fang Penghui was interrupted before he could finish his sentence, as Xu Huo and a few other players in black shirts and hooded shirts didn’t hesitate to follow the procession.

"They must be crazy!"

"Staying in the town might not be safe." Fu Danhong and Tian Kunwen hesitated for a moment but then followed suit.

The remaining players hesitated for a few seconds, with most choosing to go to the pond, and only a very few completely backing out, turning around and heading back to the town.

Fearing the power of the Eye Sacrifice, Xu Huo and the others didn’t get too close, but followed far behind the procession. Only when they approached the pond did they discover that the sound of water they heard before was due to the water level in the pond dropping, revealing a stone path leading straight to the opposite shore where the front of the procession had already started crossing.

At the same time, faint red lights appeared in the mist, and the sounds of drums and festivity came from that direction, forming a call and response with the procession on this side.

"There really is a city on the opposite shore!" Yi Pei couldn’t help but exclaim.

"Could that side be the true Sifang Palace City?" Fang Penghui, who arrived behind Xu Huo, whispered, "Are we going to follow them over?"

"We’ve come this far; of course, we have to go see." Xu Huo responded without turning back.

Of course, other players were more concerned about the possibility of encountering more Eye Sacrifices on the other side, but obtaining high-rated good items was their ultimate goal, and the risk was worth it!

Xu Huo was the first to step onto the stone path, and to avoid drawing attention to himself, he simply blended into the procession of the Eye Sacrifice and followed along.

Taking advantage of the fact that they hadn’t reached the opposite shore yet, he located Xiao Yun’s Brother, who was conscious but obediently following the crowd.

Xiao Yun’s Brother ignored the light tap from him and didn’t turn around; instead, he waved his hand slightly and then pointed ahead.

Xu Huo paused slightly only to find that the people walking beside him, whether alive or dead, all turned their heads to look at him.

He immediately realised these people might not be in their right minds yet were still capable of passing on information, so he couldn’t help but smile, keeping his eyes fixed straight ahead.

The following players, seeing him sway along with the crowd, slowed down and created a distance from him.

At first, they were solely trying to avoid any traps Xu Huo might step into, but it didn’t take long before they noticed that both the dead and the living were staring at them. They caught on and adopted the same disguise.

The eyes scrutinizing them gradually shifted away, and both parties reached the opposite bank without incident.

They had expected the abandoned old city to be dilapidated, or at least badly in disrepair, but as they drew closer, Xu Huo and the others realized the scale of the city was far beyond their imagination. The spacious streets flanked by medieval-style buildings that looked more like miniature towers, with eaves and windows all carved with eye motifs.

These buildings seemed newly renovated as the smell of paint had not completely dissipated, but inside and out were filled with people bearing exaggerated smiles, some standing at the doorways, others joining the procession.

Xu Huo noticed some individuals clad in black armor and wearing helmets standing on top of certain rooftops, distinct from the participants in the Eye Sacrifice procession, they rotated their heads, surveying the entire parade.

Suddenly, a player walking in front started to dash towards a house to the side, but before he could reach the door, two Black Armored People descended from the rooftop like lightning to his front—one kicked him flying away, while the other grabbed him by the nape of the neck halfway and forcefully pinned him to the ground!

"Emergency withdrawal!" The player gestured and slid out from under the Black Armored People. Unfortunately, they were too fast. After a quick spin in place, they caught his leg again before he could escape. With a snap, the leg bone was crushed!

Another Black Armored Person approached, reaching for his throat.

Xu Huo was close by. Without attracting attention, he tried to use a small prop, but it had no effect; what’s more, the two individuals, along with other Black Armored People on the surrounding rooftops, instantly turned their eyes towards him!

It wasn’t just actions and movements that exposed him, but using a prop did as well!

As he contemplated whether to act, a drum sound suddenly echoed from the front!

This drumbeat was unlike the faint ones before; like an electric shock, it reverberated inside their ears making them momentarily disoriented, unsure of their location.

"Dong!"

"Dong!"

After three drum beats, the players mingled within the crowd began to synchronize with the procession.

All kinds of eyes appeared on walls, floors, skies, and even the fog a distance away would stir into the shape of eyes. This was no longer a matter of avoidance; as long as one’s eyes were open, it was inevitable. But if they closed their eyes, the Black Armored People and the procession would instantly notice something amiss!

After the drumming ceased, Xu Huo and the others followed the crowd for another hundred meters, after which three more players broke out of the procession!

"Run now, or it’ll be too late!"

At that moment, at least half of them realized that even before encountering the instance boss, they might be turned into puppets by the eerie drum sound and the omnipresent "eyes"—it was time for a last-ditch effort before completely losing their senses!
