Chapter 683: Chapter 683: If You Dare, Come Out
Xu Huo stood up and walked towards the side door step by step.
At this moment, darkness surrounded the inside and outside of the house, yet the area near the side door was exceptionally clear and visible even in the night.
In that instant, his brain ceased to think, reduced to a single, pure instinct: to go in and take a look.
An indescribable odd feeling overcame him; at that moment, Xu Huo had completely forgotten the word "danger," with no other aim but to simply "enter and see."
Just as he reached for the doorknob, ready to push the door open, something suddenly nudged him in the back. He snapped out of his "entranced" state, forcefully closed the door, and turned around to look back, finding the pair of grandparents silently standing behind him.
Two people with eyes red as blood lunged at him together. Xu Huo pressed down on the little girl’s head with one hand and pushed the old man away with his umbrella, then sprinkled some sleeping potion in their direction.
Grandparent and grandchild collapsed in succession. Xu Huo’s mind wandered again, and he found himself involuntarily turning toward the door at the back. But instead of reaching for the doorknob with the enchanted desire to enter, he put on "Sticky as Glue" and smeared the secreted sticky substance all over the lock and door cracks.
A strange idea compelled him to break in, but now Xu Huo would not be fooled. He hung a "Do Not Disturb" sign to counteract the mental influence and then tapped on the door panel, "Come out if you dare."
"But I know you definitely can’t, not even able to open a wooden cabinet door... With no hands, no feet, you don’t seem all that impressive for a ’god.’"
A rapid "cluck-cluck" sound came from behind the door, and the unconscious grandparents silently rose and charged at the side door again. But Xu Huo stepped in front of them first, bundled them up with a rope, and threw them into a corner. Then he sighed pitifully at the door, "Truly pitiful."
This seemed to infuriate the "god" in the room; red light seeped through the gaps of the door and windows, and within moments, the quiet courtyard stirred to life. In a few seconds, the door of the courtyard was shattered, and residents living nearby surged in through the main gate, like animals being driven, crazily slamming into the room where the divine statue was placed.
Xu Huo carried the pair of grandparents and came out without haste, squatting on the courtyard wall to observe the light inside the house.
After a moment, he concluded that the red light could affect the thinking of ordinary people, but had little effect on players. During this time, some people had broken the doors and windows, revealing more light, but this failed to sway his sanity.
Thinking it over, he raised his voice, "Is that all you’ve got?"
The actions of the crowd crashing into the house halted abruptly, and then in unison, they turned their heads, their bloodshot eyes staring at him from various angles.
Xu Huo stroked his chin, "Well, well, nearly a full 180."
He symbolically clapped his hands twice, "Out of a hundred, this time I’ll give you sixty."
It seemed that his repeated disdainful attitude had incited the fury of the statue in the room. Starting from this courtyard, the houses in the vicinity began to light up with red glows one after another. Sounds of doors opening and closing were heard in quick succession, and the town’s residents converged from all directions, flocking and blocking Xu Huo like zombies.
Xu Huo moved along the top of the courtyard wall, his pace not fast, leading the residents towards the direction of the hotel. As the crowd grew, he noticed a few players mingled among them, their expressions vacant, identical to those of the local residents.
"What’s happening?" a player in black jumped out from a courtyard and followed behind Xu Huo.
"Can’t you see? The god has gone berserk," Xu Huo said while running, "Must be impotent rage, I guess."
The player in black looked up at him earnestly, and upon seeing that Xu Huo was not joking, said, "It seems this god isn’t that powerful either."
Passing through the streets, more and more players joined Xu Huo and the black-shirted player’s group, and they ran out of the town.
"Where are you taking them?" Fang Penghui immediately spotted Xu Huo’s intention, "To the pond? What’s actually down there?"
"Let’s go and see for ourselves to know," Xu Huo couldn’t be certain. Everything seemed normal in the county town during the day, and no problem could be discerned. Since this wasn’t the core location of the instance, time could also be one of the variables, so a nighttime visit was necessary.
The night before, he and Yi Pei were trapped in the woods. Even if they called all the players, they might not have the advantage, but the situation might be different if all the townspeople rushed in together.
"There are still a few players in the crowd," Tian Kunwen caught up and said.
"Don’t worry about them, they’re probably beyond help," Fu Danhong said, "Be careful not to look at the spilled out statues!"
Some players had been affected, and the rest were extra cautious, pulling up their clothes to cover their sides, trying their best not to look at the source of the red light.
However, when the players led the residents of the county town into the woods in a mighty stream, the red light in the town suddenly disappeared, and the running crowd gradually slowed down. Their stiff gazes started to recover, and someone, scratching their head, asked, "How did I end up here?"
The person next to them, also scratching their head, said, "I must have been sleepwalking, it’s not even dawn yet."
"Oh dear, it’s still raining, I’m soaked through!"
"Move it, what are you waiting for? The sooner you go back, the sooner you can sleep!"
"Which bastard stepped on my foot..."
"Don’t push, in such a hurry to reincarnate!"
...
Just half a minute before, the people who had been without consciousness like marionettes, now reverted to their usual boisterous and cursing selves. However, amid the noise, not a single person doubted the situation at hand. Instead, everyone seemed quite exhilarated, splitting into groups with chilling smiles, chatting and laughing as they dispersed.
Even when following them back to the town, one could hear complaints about broken doors and windows and talk of fixing them tomorrow.
The players stood at the hotel, looking at each other in bewilderment.
The only silver lining was that the few players who had zoned out also came back with them.
"What exactly happened?" Fang Penghui quickly inquired about the incident.
Their minds were a bit hazy, completely unable to remember the process of walking with the crowd. They vaguely described what had happened before the incident.
Putting together their words, it seemed they had given in to curiosity, opened the wooden cabinet meant for offering to the gods, and upon seeing the stone eyes inside, a flash of red light from the eyes had caused them to lose consciousness.
"None of them stayed in the room housing the god’s statue, but were still lured to open the door," Fang Penghui frowned, "A player’s willpower is far stronger than that of an ordinary person, yet there wasn’t the slightest hint of coming to their senses during the episode. This instance’s boss seems tough to handle, probably withdrawing early because the timing wasn’t right."
"The timing wasn’t right?" Wei Xian was slightly puzzled.
"The longer you stay in the instance, the deeper the psychological impact," Xu Huo added, "At first, those completely unaffected gradually began to feel eerie gazes and, under the influence of this power, would go to open the door on their own accord. After five or six days, if the spiritual power of a player wasn’t strong enough, just the gaze from the eyes could drive a person mad."
If susceptible to enchantment without the concept of using characteristics or potion, then players were not much different from ordinary people.
