Chapter 670 Someone Knocks on the Door

Chapter 670: Chapter 670 Someone Knocks on the Door

After closing the room door, Xu Huo took a moment to survey the room’s decor.

Judging by ordinary aesthetic standards, this room was almost unbearably hideous; its walls were carved with complex, indecipherable patterns, a look mimicked by the carpet, the bedsheets, and even the bathroom tiles and curtains.

In the dim yellow light, the room felt oppressively gloomy. The only bearable sights were the toilet, the wash basin, and the mirror above it.

He entered the bathroom and carelessly draped a towel over the mirror before tending to the wound on his arm, rolling up his sleeve.

The long, festering wound had grown even larger, and although he could see the mycelium inside, the discomfort from the injury had not dissipated.

After cutting away part of the wound and bandaging it, he came out, draping his coat over a chair. "I’m not going out today," he said.

The Girl in the painting affixed inside his clothes blinked, maintaining her original position within his clothes.

Just as he was about to lie down and sleep, his room door was knocked on. Xu Huo opened it to find the hotel manager, who handed him a boxed meal. "This is complimentary from the hotel, and it comes with an apple," the manager said.

His clean overcoat had been replaced with a uniform, emitting a scent of perfume.

"Is it possible to order something else?" Xu Huo asked.

"I’m afraid not," the manager replied. "Another colleague had to take leave for a personal matter, and now I’m the only one left at the hotel. I can only offer boxed meals. If you want something else, you’ll have to go out. But here, we sleep early; everyone closes at ten."

Xu Huo handed him a few White Notes. "I’d like to order some late-night snacks tonight."

The manager took the money, grinning as he said, "That’s fine. Just give me a call when you’re ready, and we’ll settle the cost of the dishes separately."

Xu Huo didn’t say much more and closed the door, setting the food box aside and lying down to sleep.

He slept deeply until a frantic knocking woke him up.

"Get lost!" he shouted outward, and the knocking abruptly stopped. A moment later, the person outside hastily left.

Turning over and getting out of bed, Xu Huo felt somewhat refreshed and saw that it was already one in the morning.

Looking through the edge of the curtains, outside was shrouded in fog; the streets were devoid of both lights and voices. In contrast, the hotel windows emitted a faint glow.

"Thump, thump, thump!" An intermittent knocking sound came from upstairs. Xu Huo washed his face and stepped out, heading for the third floor. As soon as he reached it, he saw Wei Xian standing by a door, looking around. Upon spotting Xu Huo, Wei Xian quickly asked, "Did you see You Jun just now?"

"No. Are you staying together?" Xu Huo glanced into the room, noticing two pairs of neatly placed shoes and that Wei Xian was wearing slippers.

"He’s gone missing," Wei Xian said uneasily. "Someone was knocking earlier, and he said he would check. I came out as soon as I heard the door opening, but he was gone!"

At that moment, Yi Pei emerged from the next room. "Could he have gone to another player’s room?"

"No," Wei Xian responded firmly. "What’s the point of switching rooms in the middle of the night?"

Unexpectedly, someone was also staying in the adjacent room; a curly-haired man opened his door, irritatedly suggesting, "Maybe he ran off to some female player’s room."

Fu Danhong and Tian Kunwen were staying on the second floor. Xu Huo passed by without hearing any noise.

"Let’s go downstairs and ask," he suggested.

The curly-haired man’s door slammed shut, and the three of them headed to the second floor where they knocked on Fu Danhong’s door to inquire if she had seen You Jun.

"How could he possibly come to my room?" Fu Danhong said, "Even if I went up and knocked on his door, given our relationship, it’s not certain he would open it for me."

The two had friction on the train and did not get along; even if Fu Danhong had been outside seeking help, You Jun might not have opened the door.

"Why would he open the door?" Tian Kunwen frowned and said, "It’s not normal for someone to knock on the door in the middle of the night, and having reached Level D in the copy, would he still make such a basic mistake?"

Reminded by him, the others realized that You Jun might have encountered danger.

"This isn’t quite right," Wei Xian said. "I was in my room and didn’t hear any other noises. If something had happened, he would have at least shouted, right?"

"So you’re saying he was taken away without any resistance?" Fu Danhong pondered for a moment. "Could it be that he left on his own?"

"If he were in danger, he would instinctively put up some fight based on instinct, no matter whether it’s against players or some unknown danger. The lack of noise and signs of struggle is too abnormal."

"What if he was incapable of resisting?" Yi Pei said. "Perhaps the person knocking had a way to render someone unconscious with one strike."

"Who else’s door was knocked on?" Xu Huo asked.

Several shook their heads, but Yi Pei said, "I heard the door of the room next to mine being knocked on, not You Jun’s room, but the one belonging to the man who came out to talk to us earlier. However, he didn’t open the door."

"But he didn’t seem eager to communicate with us," Wei Xian said. "His attitude was also not good."

"Players who arrive first have the advantage; he might know something," Tian Kunwen said. "Fu Danhong and I will go ask him. You guys look around nearby for You Jun; if we don’t find him alive, we should at least find a body."

The group split up to take action, Xu Huo with Yi Pei and Wei Xian went to find the manager to get a key, but the manager wasn’t in the lounge.

"If the person is not here, could it be he lured You Jun out?" Wei Xian said.

"That’s unlikely," Yi Pei, touching the bedsheets, said, "There’s no warmth in them; the manager probably doesn’t stay here at night."

"He also took his water glass," Xu Huo added.

If the knocker was the manager, he wouldn’t normally carry a water glass with him.

Additionally, three rooms were knocked on tonight, with very short intervals between each, on both the second and third floors, indicating at least two people were active.

Xu Huo picked up the register next to him and compared the guest names against their room numbers. Some of the names had been crossed out, but the earliest guest could be traced back to three days ago, meaning there was still one player who had been in the copy for four days staying at the hotel.

The curly-haired man on the third floor, Fang Penghui, and Liu Shiyen, who had been seen on the first floor, checked in two days ago.

Besides them, there were also three guests who had checked in three days ago, three two days ago, and four who had checked in the day before but checked out the next day.

The names of the guests who checked out had not been crossed off.

"The ones crossed off must be dead, right? So are the ones who checked out all at the guesthouse?" Wei Xian said. "Are these people still alive?"

Who could know that? After pausing for a moment, he said, "That Liu Shiyen we met earlier claimed he’d only been here for one day, yet he’s been staying in the hotel for two days!"

"Others don’t have to tell you the truth," Xu Huo put down the register and turned to look at the stairs as Fu Danhong and Tian Kun came down, both with unpleasant expressions on their faces. The latter shook his head, "Not to mention gathering information, the door wasn’t even opened for us, and we got scolded."

After a second of silence, Yi Pei said, "We didn’t find You Jun in the hallway or the vacant rooms; if we want to keep looking, we’ll have to go outside."

"Go outside if you want to, but I’m not taking that risk," Fu Danhong, with her arms crossed, nodded towards the door. "Take a look at the situation outside now."
