Chapter 628: Players with Great Imaginations

Chapter 628: Chapter 628: Players with Great Imaginations

"Ah!!!" After nightfall, screams started to come from different directions within the hospital: the high floors of building one, the labs of building two—sometimes the wails were so indistinct that even the gender of the screamer couldn’t be discerned. The sounds that filled the players’ ears at night were chilling to the bone.

Moreover, the situation inside the hospital had worsened compared to the day before, with black patches growing on the corridor floors and a strange, pungent smell drifting everywhere. This deterred some players who had planned to steal samples at night from even stepping out of their rooms.

The difficult environment forced the players to cooperate. Gu Yu, Zheng Liang, and a few others gathered with some other Black Players to discuss countermeasures.

They had tried the first task during the day, but not a single player had managed to complete it; instead, those who had undergone psychological treatment seemed to have developed some issues.

"I paid special attention to the guy with the scarred arm," said a Buzz Cut Black Player, "After he finished his treatment during the day, he never came out again. Just now, during the hospital’s disinfection, I saw two security guards carry a body bag out of that treatment room. I heard he was scared to death."

"Scared to death?" This was a crushing blow to the already distressed players, "What situation can scare a person to death? There were no messy ghosts or monsters in the hospital during the day!"

"That’s unknown," the Buzz Cut Black Player responded, "but I’ve figured it out—this hospital is definitely experimenting on patients. Scarred Arm likely died because of it."

"I did a head count. Excluding those taken to the seventh floor, there are less than forty people left from the third to the sixth floors. Some went missing last night," said Gu Yu. "Tonight, I’m afraid even more people will disappear."

"There are also new patients in the hospital." Wen Xuelin spoke up, "But they were directly quarantined in building three."

"Definitely the players who arrived later. Bad luck for them; the quarantine ward must be full of infected individuals. Whether the contagion is real or not, those people are walking into a hellishly difficult situation upon arrival," said another female player. "I’ve thoroughly studied the three tasks needed for clearing the game. The first task is a no-go, and the second one obviously increased in difficulty. We might as well give the third one a try."

The group exchanged glances, and the Buzz Cut Black Player said, "Someone has already tried the third task, but didn’t make it."

"If they didn’t make it, it’s either because we got the timing wrong, or the way of cleansing was incorrect," the female player said. "But think about it, there’s nothing much at the main gate to clean. Now it’s different; there’s an infection in the hospital—maybe this is the opportunity we need."

"That’s a possibility," Brother Liang said, rubbing his chin. "Let’s first try with the Cleansing Potion."

"I stole it from the janitor." The female player took out a glass bottle.

"Testing it is fine, but we need to lure those ghostly things away from the door," said the Buzz Cut player. "Right now, no one can open their panels. It’s very dangerous for anyone to go out, so the fairest way is to draw lots."

He said this and took out paper and pen he had swiped from the nurse’s desk, "Let’s divide into odds and evens; odd numbers will be the bait, evens will go to the main gate."

No one objected, and all the players folded their pieces of paper and drew lots in turn. There were twelve in total: Gu Yu, Wen Xuelin, the Buzz Cut player, the female player who proposed the idea, and two others went to the main gate, while the rest were tasked with luring away the ghastly beings on the floor.

"Let’s hope more people keep their heads clear tonight," Brother Liang said before quietly pulling the door ajar with a fire extinguisher. The sight outside, though, took him completely by surprise. The hallway was not the way it was when they had come out; aside from the infection, there were heaps and heaps of writhing flesh blocking both sides, covering the walls and the ceiling. More chunks of flesh and slime were continuously falling from above, making a hissing corrosion noise as they landed on the ground.

"Is this real or fake?" Zheng Liang couldn’t help but speak out.

"Of course it’s fake. Did you see anything like this at the hospital during the day? It grew so much in just a little while; it must come from the imagination of the players!" Brother Liang gritted his teeth, "These idiots, the instance has already warned not to imagine—yet here they are, letting their minds run wild!"

"Roar! Roar!" Sounds similar to the roar of wild beasts came from neither far nor near, giving everyone a vague sense of foreboding. Buzz Cut said, "Don’t tell me someone has imagined zombies..."

Before he could finish, the door of the adjacent room was forcefully smashed open, and a person tumbled to the ground along with the door. Then, they twisted and rose, tilting their head back to look toward their door!

Brother Liang immediately slammed the door shut, and the person outside happened to collide with it at the same time. If there were two or three people inside bracing it, the door might have fallen off from that impact.

"That’s not a zombie imagined into existence; that’s a player." Brother Liang said, "A patient who lived in the next room, he has turned into a zombie!"

"What the hell is going on in this hospital!" Wen Xuelin’s face turned pale, "Could it be that those germs could infect people and turn them into zombies?"

"What zombies, if anything, they’d only turn into Aliens!" Buzz Cut said, "Didn’t you notice how strong he was?"

Everyone’s mind was in disarray, momentarily unable to figure out whether the person outside had truly turned into an Alien or had just imagined themselves into one. If it was the former, it meant the contagion was very severe, capable of causing transformations into Aliens. The latter would mean the danger in the hospital was still sourced from their own imaginations and that the instance didn’t actually curtail their real strength, meaning their physical capabilities were still intact, just that they believed they weren’t.

"We can only take a gamble now." Gu Yu rapidly tied the bed sheets in the room into knots and then threw them out the window, "This is the third floor. Hold on to me as I go down, it’s all the same inside and outside the main doors!"

"I’ll go!" Zheng Liang tried to stop her, but Gu Yu didn’t agree. She pushed Zheng Liang away, "Someone light should go down to make it easier to get back up."

Having said that, she sat herself on the window sill. Listening to the various noises coming from the window, she nodded at Zheng Liang and then slid down.

The second floor had also become a playground for monsters. As soon as she reached a window, several hands reached out. Gu Yu avoided the grasping, but the rope tied around her waist was seized. Watching the incredible strength of those hands, almost pulling Zheng and the others down from above, she decisively cut the bed sheet with her knife!

"Sister Gu Yu!" Wen Xuelin called out.

The floor wasn’t high, so after landing, Gu Yu ran towards the main entrance. Unexpectedly, many "zombies" burst out from both sides, and one even jumped down from above, blocking her path!

She recognized that as a Cannibal Player. Seeing the blood on his mouth, she picked up a potted plant nearby and flung it, trying to get around him. But the other was too fast, grabbing her arm and biting into her shoulder!

Zheng Liang and the others had also jumped down. Gu Yu didn’t look back, violently smashing a glass bottle against the door. The bottle shattered, spilling Cleansing Potion over half the door, and in an instant, she disappeared from the spot!
