Chapter 614: Chapter 614 You Are Free
Nie Xuan conveyed the intentions of the Special Defense Department, which can be summarized as follows: although the current situation is not very good, it is not unsolvable. The headquarters has already grasped the movements of several small groups of Cannibal Players, and by using them as examples for a crackdown, they can issue a direct warning to the other players with ulterior motives that are now gathering in Jing City.
Xu Huo doesn’t need to do anything, not even act as bait. The Special Defense Department has ways to divert the Cannibal Players; he just needs to stay out of sight.
"Since when is the Special Defense Department so easy to talk to?" Xu Huo laughed, "Surely there’s not only Chief Song at headquarters?"
Nie Xuan was reviewing video footage related to the Sea City incident. He said, "I’ve been to that burnt-down hotel in Water City and brought back something useful. Minister Fan actually wants to invite Li Chun to work at the Special Defense Department; it’s just unclear whether she’d be willing to."
"You should contact her directly," Xu Huo said, glancing at Girl in the painting lounging on the sofa playing games.
"She doesn’t answer her phone," Nie Xuan obviously knew what she was doing, but he intuitively sensed that asking Girl in the painting would lead nowhere.
"Since she has been with you ever since she appeared in Ting City, she should listen to you. Why don’t you try persuading her? I see she spends quite a bit each month, and it wouldn’t be a problem for the Special Defense Department to open a back door for her."
Xu Huo left the room and went to the adjacent lounge, "Save the jokes, if the Special Defense Department is capable, let them persuade her directly."
Girl in the painting is not his tool, nor does she belong to him; he cannot fully interfere with her behavior.
When she first came out of Skinning Artisan’s Copy, Girl in the painting was somewhat naive to the world; now she’s learned the ropes, even knowing to buy cheats for her games.
An autonomous super prop won’t be as harmless as she appears on the surface. Her staying in Zone 014 and by his side is simply because she wishes to.
Xu Huo can neither restrain nor command her.
"So sure of that?" Nie Xuan paused the video on the computer at the moment when Girl in the painting was "killed" by a masked player, "By the way, I’ve checked the nationwide portrait database and found no information about Li Chun’s past; it’s as if she just appeared out of thin air."
Xu Huo’s expression darkened slightly, but his words were casual, "Maybe she came from some obscure place."
"Assuming that’s the case," Nie Xuan’s laugh rang out: "but she doesn’t have complete identification, which will surely draw attention during a personal information encryption review."
"Wasn’t it you who checked out her identity? You handle it," Xu Huo said, then paused before adding, "I have no intention of interfering with the Special Defense Department’s affairs. I agree to what you’ve proposed."
"Alright, then I’ll reply to the minister as such," Nie Xuan seemed uninterested in what was a conversation of no practical significance, but he reminded with an insinuation, "Xu Huo, be careful."
Xu Huo reciprocated the favor, "If you have time, you might want to keep an eye on Dai Wenqian’s movements."
After finishing the call, he held his phone, watching the screen glow fade away.
The phone call from Nie Xuan had two implications.
The first was that the Special Defense Department already knew that Li Chun was the "Girl in the painting" from the Sea City incident. They viewed her as a player in possession of super props and were interested in recruiting her.
The second was that he personally suspected Li Chun’s identity.
Xu Huo had made few attempts to rectify Girl in the painting’s identity, merely instructing her to hang herself on the wall for at least four consecutive days each month before entering the copy, which Girl in the painting had done well.
Two months ago, he thought that Girl in the painting would not stay in Zone 014 for too long, so he didn’t make any further arrangements.
It wasn’t surprising for Nie Xuan to find out what she had been up to in the hotel; it was only a matter of time, and this would mean that the Special Defense Department would help clean up after the runaway Cannibal Player.
However, Nie Xuan was too perceptive; he still suspected Girl in the painting’s identity.
This kind of suspicion was much deeper; whether he doubted that Girl in the painting was not a player from Zone 014 or suspected that she wasn’t the one who got hold of the super props, there was a possibility of uncovering the ultimate ownership of the super props. At this point, he was probably already studying the materials from the Sea City incident.
But suspicion was just suspicion; Girl in the painting was the one truly controlling the paper, and she was a real, living person. Since it had initially been determined that the super props were related to paper, it would be difficult to overturn this notion, especially since there was no second incident or item that matched the features of super props at the time.
"Creak!" The door was pushed open from the outside, and Girl in the painting poked her head in, hesitantly asking, "Are you very busy?"
Xu Huo casually slipped his phone into his pocket, "What is it?"
Girl in the painting entered hesitantly, using her phone to speak for her, "Can I get a job?"
Before Xu Huo could respond, she quickly added, "I know everyone has to work, and by working, you can make money. I want to earn my own money."
Xu Huo looked at her steadily for two seconds, "You are free."
Girl in the painting was stunned for a moment, seemingly not quite understanding his meaning.
Yet Xu Huo smiled, "I’m not your master. You don’t have a master. You don’t need anyone else’s permission to do anything."
His attitude was pleasant, more amiable than ever before. Girl in the painting reacted with some surprise, "I can really do whatever I want? Even killing people I dislike?"
Xu Huo patted her head, "First, take a look at the criminal law. Just stay away from what’s written there and you’ll be fine."
Girl in the painting assured him she would definitely read it, but in the few seconds as she walked out of the room with Xu Huo, she already had doubts, "It says here that you can’t deprive others of life, but I’ve already done that. Does that mean I have to go to jail?"
"I don’t want to go to jail. Can you get the person who wrote this to change it?"
Zheng Liang, who heard her words, couldn’t help but laugh, "This is the criminal law. How could it be changed?"
"But now many people are depriving others of life, and they are not in jail, right?"
Zheng Liang scratched his head, "It’s a special situation now, they haven’t had the time to deal with it, but surely those who kill indiscriminately will be jailed in the future."
Girl in the painting lowered her head and swiped her fingers across the screen, then said unhappily to Xu Huo, "There are so many things I can’t do. Can’t this really be changed?"
"The law definitely won’t allow changes," Brother Liang also said, "But as long as you aren’t caught, it’s usually no problem."
"Don’t lead Li Chun astray," Gu Yu still treated Girl in the painting as if she was a bit dim-witted.
"I think it’s fine," Wen Xuelin countered, "Everything is so chaotic now, what if she faces danger? What if someone deceives Li Chun?"
Girl in the painting furrowed her brows, pondered for a while, and then said, "Does it mean that if the person who wrote this dies, I don’t have to follow what’s written?"
Before anyone could respond, she continued, "Then I’ll go kill him."
All the players present stopped what they were doing and looked at Girl in the painting, who did not realize how terrifying her statement was: to avoid following the law by killing the person who made it? Was this logic not crossing several bridges? What could possibly make her raise an ordinary cognitive issue to the level of resolving it at the root with unreasoned violence?
