Chapter 1263: Chapter 1264: The Terrifying Thing Is Not Getting Used to It
"What’s wrong with you, not letting the medical robot treat your child? Do you want to drag your kid to death or what?" Someone nearby tried to help take the child away, but the woman, like a cornered rabbit, yelled with red eyes, "No one is allowed to touch my child!"
"Who wants to touch your child? Your kid is sick like that, get him checked by the robot first to avoid delaying the condition!" The person speaking was a bit angry too, "Are you paranoid or something?"
But the woman still wouldn’t let go, the robot tried to step forward several times but couldn’t do anything, then someone in the crowd suddenly exclaimed, "Could he be showing signs of regression?"
The surrounding people retreated in fear.
Terms like regression, alienation, and evolution side effects describe situations where one suffers from unresolved poisoning or shows certain animal traits and loses their mind, attacking others indiscriminately. Simply put, it means the Evolver himself cannot adapt to evolution and shows extreme symptoms. These symptoms manifest differently in different people; some experience symptoms like illness or poisoning with rapid functional decline, others’ appearance or skin becomes animal-like with high aggression. The former is not very threatening, while the latter can be as lethal as an alien.
Usually, when a normal person shows Evolver characteristics, the first consideration is whether there’s a chance to become a Player, but in a more mature game zone like District 001, nearly every ordinary resident undergoes genetic screening. It’s often determined early whether one can become a Player. Generally, when ordinary people exhibit such conditions, it’s often not a good situation, especially for a six or seven-year-old child, as no such young children become Players in the game.
So when someone mentioned the possibility of regression, the first reaction of the crowd was fear.
"No!" The woman shouted with a terrified expression, tightening her grip around the child and yelling at the people around her, "My child hasn’t regressed!"
"It’s not up to you to say if he’s regressed; if he turns into a little monster and hurts someone, who will take responsibility?" said the woman who shouted that the child might be regressed. "Hand him over to the robot for examination, and you’ll find out if he’s regressed!"
Players and ordinary people in the gaming world both have a new name, called Evolver, but more often Evolvers refer to ordinary people who have taken potions. They can’t take special Evolution Potions like Players, but they benefit from other potions, such as enhancing the body, reducing diseases, and even improving mental capacity. Some people can adapt to this "evolution," but some show symptoms early and die young, while others may not show them until much older—just like Players, except the percentage of ordinary people showing evolution side effects is higher than Players. However, cases of children showing side effects early are rare.
"Your child is so young, maybe he’s not regressing," a Player nearby said kindly, "Why not let him get treated first, after all, you can’t disembark if he’s regressing anyway."
But the woman didn’t appreciate it, her eyes bloodshot as she glared at everyone, "I don’t trust any of you! You all want to harm my child! Regardless of whether he’s regressing, the government will take him away! I just want my child to grow up safe and sound, I don’t want him to become a Player..."
Before she finished speaking, she suddenly collapsed to the ground, even dropping the child.
The child’s face was flushed red and his eyes couldn’t open, calling for his mother unconsciously, while the woman, hit by an anesthetic needle, lay paralyzed on the ground, having to watch helplessly as the robot picked him up for examination.
"Ah... ah..." The woman let out animalistic growls, her hysteria making her look nothing like a normal person, leading others to an inevitable thought:
Could she be regressing too?
Everyone except the Players retreated within the limits allowed by the monitoring devices.
The woman’s eyes were only on her child, but half a minute later, robotic testing of the child’s blood gave the result:
"New case of regression detected, subject 0931 will be safely taken to the Degenerate Hospital."
After announcing the result, the robot tied up the child and carried him away overhead, while another robot, having found nothing wrong with the woman after a check, left alongside it.
The anesthetic in the woman hadn’t worn off yet, but no one paid attention to her anymore, nor did anyone come to explain her child’s situation, as if it were an unspoken rule for the government to naturally take over when regression cases arose, without needing to explain anything to their family.
Someone helped the woman to a seat at the side.
"It’s just unavoidable..." The incident quickly spread to other parts of the flying ship, and many were saying, "Who’s to blame her child regressed? If he went berserk, who knows how many would die, everyone just wants to live well..."
"...The child is young, and she’s still young too, there’s a chance for her to have another..."
"It’s terrifying," a younger female Player couldn’t help but remark, "It seems like everyone thinks this is normal."
Xu Huo looked at that mother: What’s frightening is not the customary acceptance, but that everyone consciously suppresses their humanity, not even allowing themselves an ounce of pity.
"It’s simple, people who regress might harm others. The more instances there are, compared to those irrational degenerates who can be directly killed, their surviving family members bear more anger and even replace the degenerate as the sinner." A Player with a small beard beside him said, "They are sinners, isn’t it nice enough not to give her any trouble."
"But that child hasn’t even had a chance to hurt anyone, and it’s still uncertain if he’s regressed," the young female Player said, as Players are habitually suspicious of government actions in the game zones.
Xiao Huzi stood up, tugged at the fabric sticking to his pants’ seat, and shook his leg, "You don’t understand, family members of degenerates are now a social class."
"I’ll go take a look, just in case that woman tries to jump ship and commit suicide."
The young female Player was puzzled, "Why are you saving her? If she wants to commit suicide, can you keep following her?"
"Of course not, but what’s in front of me, I can still save. It’d be a pity for someone so young to die." Xiao Huzi walked away in an outward-eight gait.
Nothing was surprising among the Players, the young female Player mumbled something and let it go.
The first thing the woman did after regaining her ability to move was to walk to the observation window, reaching to open the monitoring device that had come to warn her. Just as she was about to climb up, Xiao Huzi intercepted her with a single hand, "Lady, don’t think so negatively. What hurdle can’t you cross? Your child isn’t dead yet. If you jump now, you won’t see him. Why not wait until he’s dead before you jump? When you’re underground, it’ll be easier for you to find a child than for a child to find you!"
The woman scratched a few blood marks on his face, but Xiao Huzi wasn’t angry, and advised, "Have you thought about having another child to replace..."
"Smack!" A loud slap ended the inappropriate advice.
