Chapter 1233: Chapter 1234: Delivering On Our Doorstep
Xu Huo paused for a moment before looking at the bowl of soup in her hand. "Smells good."
"Tastes even better," Mu Yan replied. "Da Hu added some rare, high-priced ingredients, all mutant plants. Their effects are extraordinary."
"Then I must try it." Xu Huo took the bowl and drank without hesitation.
"Hey..." Mu Yan’s expression changed, and she instinctively tried to stop him. But seeing his gaze fixed on her, she swallowed her words and changed her tone. "...It’s hot."
"It’s fine." Xu Huo finished the soup in a few gulps and handed the bowl back to her. "Another bowl. It’s pretty good. You should have some too."
Seeing this, Mu Yan said no more and joined Da Hu and the others for a lively dinner.
The dense fog rolled in, and the maze quickly restored its eerie calm. Xu Huo and the others used their various props to rest. Around midnight, two people quietly got up from opposite sides.
The intentionally left lighting barely illuminated more than a few meters. Beyond that, the shadows sharply contrasted with the light. When a figure emerged from the darkness, their face was completely different from the honest and cheerful one they had shown during the day.
Da Hu glanced at the obliviously sleeping players on the ground and sneered, "With vigilance like this, how can they even call themselves players? They should just go home and start shopping for burial plots."
The other player was more cautious. After using a prop to restrain a few people, they approached Mu Yan. "Are you certain she knows what Xu Zhi’s secret card is?"
"Aren’t the two of them good friends?" Da Hu replied. "Let’s start by giving her a dose of truth serum. If she doesn’t spill, we can give Xu Zhi one next."
The companion glanced at the open door of the shelter. "Are you sure he’s asleep?"
"He ate the most, so he must be sleeping the deepest," Da Hu said impatiently. "He won’t wake up anytime soon. Let’s deal with the woman first."
"Why make it so complicated? Just kill them and be done with it," the companion said.
"I’ve collected enough cards already. What if the secret card gets reassigned randomly?" Da Hu snapped. "Blame these damn rules. Otherwise, would we even need to go through all this trouble?"
The companion wisely shut his mouth, then lifted Mu Yan and injected her with a dose of truth serum before waking her up.
Mu Yan half-opened her eyes and mumbled incoherently in response to their questions. "Throne..."
"Throne?" Da Hu smirked. "That means it’s the White Throne. Time to swap cards."
"Honestly, if you had just chopped off one of his arms, you might’ve gotten the answer anyway. Why waste a dose of truth serum..." the companion muttered under his breath, clearly feeling it wasn’t worth it.
"Use your brain for once," Da Hu said smugly. "If it gets bloody, who wouldn’t figure out it was us? I want to watch these fools lose their minds trying to figure it out, only to have no leads in the end... Not everything needs to be solved with violence. If you can win without casualties, why not?"
Before he could finish speaking, two more players sat up behind them. The first, with pale skin, calmly removed the props strapped to his body. "Looks like you’ve got a secret card in your hand too, huh?"
Da Hu and his companion spun around abruptly. Their rich combat experience told them how crucial it was to seize the initiative. Almost instinctively, they hurled their props as they turned.
But the duo opposite them wasn’t to be underestimated. Having long prepared, they easily intercepted the props and flanked Da Hu and his companion from both sides. The pale-faced player said, "Kill him first, then the one named Xu. They both have secret cards. Getting one or two won’t cost us anything!"
The four of them broke out into a chaotic battle, inevitably involving the still-asleep pair. By the time the two opened their eyes, Da Hu had already seized the opportunity to point at the opposing players and shout, "They drugged the food!"
The two who had just "woken up" immediately became alert. The female player exchanged a glance with her companion, and they both withdrew from the fighting circle.
"Do you really think people will believe anything you say?" the pale-faced player sneered. "You were the one most eager to cook, and most of the ingredients were yours. Neither of us even touched the food or ingredients!"
The female player and her companion instantly shifted their focus to Da Hu.
"They were trying to get Xu’s card. If you don’t believe me, ask the woman on the ground. She was dosed with truth serum and can’t lie about anything," the pale-faced player said.
The female player turned around and saw Mu Yan sitting dazedly on the ground. What more needed to be said?
"Da Hu probably has a card too. How about this—we four team up, take him down first, then go after Xu. We’ll each get a card, and we can cooperate afterward," the pale-faced player suggested.
"Do you think you can just kill us and take the cards?" Da Hu glared at the pale-faced player but directed his words at the female player and her companion. "Don’t you see? Once they’ve dealt with us, you’re next! They’ve been hiding the truth ever since they found clues in the maze walls earlier today!"
"Whether we’ve been truthful or not, at least we haven’t killed anyone. If you didn’t have so many cards, you’d have started killing long ago!"
The female player and the buzz-cut player weren’t originally companions, but the current situation forced them into a "temporary partnership." While the latter seemed somewhat persuaded, the former’s expression turned icy. "I want no part in this. Whether it’s cards or killing, it has nothing to do with me."
She took two steps back. "I’m leaving now..."
Before she could finish, the buzz-cut player used a prop to block her path. Seeing her glaring angrily, he said, "Sorry, but you can’t leave. Only by teaming up can the two of us survive."
If she left, Da Hu and the pale-faced group would surely turn on him next!
The balance of power only stood with each side having two people.
"Miss, think about it. Once there’s one less person, I’ll let you go immediately. I won’t keep you," Da Hu invited her to join his side.
The pale-faced player offered the same condition.
As the three sides were in the middle of their heated negotiation, the female player suddenly glanced toward the shelter. Unexpectedly, she saw Xu Huo, who should have been fast asleep, already sitting calmly at the entrance. What’s more, Mu Yan, who had seemed barely conscious earlier, was now wide awake, clutching her sleeping bag as if spectating an entertaining show.
The next second, the other players all followed her gaze.
Xu Huo lightly clapped his hands. "Impressive. I didn’t expect to not only gain something tonight but also see a thrilling drama play out."
"Well, now it’s two vs. two vs. two vs. two. Nobody can do much against anyone else," Da Hu shrugged.
Xu Huo waved dismissively. "You’ve got it wrong. It’s two against six."
He pointed to himself and then gestured to the others, clearly lumping together Da Hu, the pale-faced player, and the rest as one group opposed to his side.
"Just you?" The pale-faced player sneered.
Without getting up, Xu Huo raised a single finger. Chairs abruptly materialized out of nowhere behind everyone, forcibly seating them and shoving them in a neat row outside the shelter. At the same time, their hands were tied behind them.
Da Hu and the others struggled briefly but to no avail. They quickly tried to activate their props, yet a thick barrier appeared in front of Xu Huo. Though both sides could see each other through it, the barrier effectively negated the props’ effects.
"Force crushes all obstacles!" Da Hu bellowed, aiming at the barrier.
But his characteristic ability didn’t activate. Sitting opposite, Xu Huo raised his index finger to his lips and made a silencing gesture.
