Chapter 1215: Taking the 1215th Kill
The frail man seemed insulted, his eyes flashing with anger. His body pressed tight against the ground, slithering like a snake, and in the blink of an eye, he appeared behind Jiang Zifeng, spitting out a venomous needle while catching him off guard!
"Do you think you’re the only one who’s evolved?" Jiang Zifeng, who had his back turned to the man, suddenly twisted his upper body. Not only did he intercept the venomous needle, but he also sent it back along its original path.
Unexpectedly, the man failed to defend against his own venomous needle, taking two hits directly on his forehead. His eyes rolled back as he collapsed backward!
Jiang Zifeng was stunned. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, the man who hadn’t yet hit the ground shed his clothes and vanished, reappearing thirty meters away.
This time, he turned and fled without hesitation. However, before Xu Huo and Jiang Zifeng could chase after him, a thin silver beam shot out from the depths of the dense fog, effortlessly piercing his brow!
In the instant his brow was pierced, the player froze in place, motionless. Yet, the silver beam seemed unhindered, shooting straight toward Jiang Zifeng.
Seeing the silver line rushing toward him, Jiang Zifeng, who was equipped with a defense prop, dodged without hesitation. Behind him was Xu Huo, and the silver line terminated at the "Unassailable Territory" after passing through "Three Hundred Sixty Defenses."
But with the silver line less than a meter away, Xu Huo frowned because he noticed the line, blocked by the spatial barrier, wasn’t entirely stopped. Instead, it was slowly eroding the barrier.
Of course, the process lasted only a short while. After Xu Huo retreated from the silver line’s trajectory, the line continued forward, traversing the entire maze passage like a beam of light fired from afar.
The person using the prop was still some distance away. After the beam disappeared, the person calmly vanished around the corner of the passage, leaving behind a peaceful corpse.
Xu Huo and Jiang Zifeng approached the corpse and carefully examined the wound on its forehead. Looking into each other’s eyes, Jiang Zifeng remarked, "This doesn’t seem like a wound caused by a standard prop. It’s more like some sort of combat weapon. Although the train prohibits carrying non-game-approved weapons, there are ways to obtain them. It’s best to switch zones and upgrade your weapons accordingly. Convenient, yes, but it’s a bit expensive."
"Most players don’t play that way. Props are considered relatively cost-effective weapons that players can buy."
"As expected in the big zones, there sure are a lot of rich people." Jiang Zifeng grinned. "I only spend money to get a robot to play with. If I really switched zones and weapons like that, no amount of money would suffice."
This made Xu Huo think of the Holy Sword Society. It might not necessarily be the Holy Sword Society but could be an organization similar to it—one with abundant resources and funds, capable of internally trading these weapons at low costs compared to ordinary players.
Just as he was about to speak, a sudden, tangible wave of killing intent swept over them like a storm. Xu Huo and Jiang Zifeng each dodged, narrowly evading the attack which shredded everything in its path—where they had stood, the passage floor, nearby maze walls, and even the corpse on the ground, all reduced to debris!
In battles between players, life and death often hinge on a single moment. While dodging the sudden attack, Xu Huo and Jiang Zifeng sprinted forward at full speed. Within a hundred meters through the dense fog, a hooded man briefly flitted past their vision!
"Don’t move!" Xu Huo, originally charging forward at full speed, suddenly skidded to a halt, calling out to Jiang Zifeng beside him.
Jiang Zifeng instinctively stopped, but his body still leaned forward slightly. He was barely an inch away when the protective layer of his defense prop was sliced open, and a thread thinner than one-tenth of a hair stopped right before his eyes!
A chill ran down Jiang Zifeng’s back, but he didn’t dare move carelessly. Instead, he pulled out a ball and tossed it forward. Just a meter away, the ball was sliced into pieces!
"What the hell! There’s a line-wall trap!"
"Not just that." Xu Huo blew a handful of colorful powder ahead. The special adhesive powder clung to the air as it fell, revealing a densely packed web of threads filling the ten-meter-wide passage ahead, reminiscent of coarse-woven cloth.
Jiang Zifeng glanced upward. "Wow... no way up or down."
Xu Huo tested the lines with the "Cake Cutter," but the Rank-B prop couldn’t cut through them.
"Let me handle it." Jiang Zifeng stepped back, pulling out a two-meter-long guillotine from his prop inventory. With both hands, he raised the blade high before slamming it down onto the line-wall with all his strength!
Like mocking them, just as the guillotine was about to touch the line-wall, all the threads vanished on their own!
The guillotine struck the ground instead, cracking the floor beneath him and creating a thirty-centimeter-wide fissure that extended over thirty meters!
"Damn it! Fight me head-on if you’ve got guts!" Jiang Zifeng bellowed angrily. "What kind of loser hides like this?"
"They’ve probably left," Xu Huo said. "The lines in the wall have connected distant maze walls, so chasing now would be futile. If they’re avoiding direct confrontation, they’re unlikely to show themselves again."
Though infuriated, Jiang Zifeng conceded, saying, "Fine. This game is full of sneaky types, but we better stay cautious—these people are usually incredibly petty."
Unable to find their opponent, the two decided to head back.
Returning to their previous resting spot, Xu Huo’s shelter and the female player’s refuge remained intact, while Jiang Zifeng’s tent had suffered two small burns. Despite the minor damage, the tent’s performance was compromised.
"Losses are part of the game." Xu Huo comforted Jiang Zifeng with a pat on the shoulder.
"I’ve got plenty of tents." Jiang Zifeng swapped his damaged tent for a new one and added, "But if I ever run into them, they’re dead."
The maze grew quiet again as night descended. The dense fog, combined with the peculiar scent of the plants, seemed especially soporific, tempting even the night guards to doze off. By early dawn, Xu Huo and the other three had all briefly fallen asleep.
The female player was the first to wake up, startled by some noise. As she began to rise, Xu Huo immediately told her to stop. She paused, then saw Xu Huo standing in the shelter, holding a finger up, pointing overhead.
Looking up, the female player noticed several barely perceptible threads floating above their heads. Her body stiffened as she asked, "What is this?"
The threads hovered about a meter above the ground, perfectly positioned at waist level. Across the way, Jiang Zifeng peeked out from his tent’s curtains to observe the situation outside. "These threads don’t seem to be affected directly by any prop. Your room and my tent both have gaps cleared around them."
"But on the flip side, the thread’s range is larger now." Xu Huo looked up. Last night’s line-wall trap had covered a width of ten meters. Tonight’s thread trap wasn’t as high but had extended its breadth, shrinking its original height to amplify coverage.
"Looks like someone’s set their sights on us."
