Chapter 1186: Chapter 1186: Born with Extraordinary Talent
Tang Guangbo sat back in the chair meant for a doctor. Seeing Xu Huo emerge from the Dark Space, he raised a hand and pointed to the spot in front of him.
Xu Huo cooperatively sat down and reclined, just as he had in the treatment room outside.
"How are you feeling now?" Tang Guangbo asked with a smile. "Doesn’t it feel like this evolution was remarkably easy?"
Xu Huo nodded honestly.
"That’s because someone paved the way for you," Tang Guangbo said after a brief pause. "They must’ve laid down the groundwork for the younger you. If it were now, perhaps they would’ve made it even more challenging."
Xu Huo glanced at him. "Isn’t it a bit against professional ethics for a doctor to tease their patient?"
"Why would it be?" Tang Guangbo replied. "Watch more societal news—doctors like me are already considered the better ones."
"The tensions between doctors and patients these days... some people deserve more than a little blame," Xu Huo said, twitching the corner of his mouth.
Tang Guangbo flipped open a notebook. "Let’s begin."
What he wanted to know wasn’t the kind of evolutionary triggers or cautions that aspiring Super Evolvers sought, but data on evolution itself.
Back in Base W37 City, Xu Huo had undergone tests that measured the strength of his spiritual power, yielding specific figures at the time.
"I’m not interested in the numbers produced by instruments," Tang Guangbo stated. "You can use your psychic power. I have my own set of evaluation standards."
"Care to share them?" Xu Huo expressed a hint of interest.
"Of course." Tang Guangbo conjured a transparent sphere that floated in the air, lightly pressing on its surface. "When it dents under pressure and then rebounds, or swells as it fills internally, that represents changes in the total psychic power. There’s some flexibility, but exceeding a certain threshold will overwhelm the brain. This threshold is also the breaking point of mental collapse—it’s the critical value measurable by instruments."
"But this only reflects the quantity. As the intensity of evolution deepens, the quantity also increases."
"The first change in quantity occurs at the onset of evolution, when the Evolver becomes aware of the concept of spirit evolution. The second happens upon successfully expanding the Spiritual World and projecting it to affect others. The third pertains to compressing that quantity, typically referring to solidifying imagined things within the Spiritual World into lethal entities, such as materialized items. The fourth involves influencing reality. At this stage, it’s no longer merely about affecting others mentally; barriers created by psychic power can become virtually indistinguishable from reality. Simply seeing through an illusion might not be enough to break it."
"Each of these four stages triggers a change in the total psychic power. On the surface, it appears to also undergo qualitative leaps, but that only indicates the Evolver’s learning progress—it doesn’t necessarily represent their intrinsic changes."
Xu Huo understood. "You believe the Evolver’s personal transformation is the essence of spirit evolution. Quantitative or qualitative changes are the end results, not the reasons for becoming stronger."
Tang Guangbo smiled approvingly. He tapped his finger on the sphere, and spots of light appeared within. As the sphere was compressed or swelled, the light spots varied in intensity.
"Super Evolution has its nodes, and these nodes are revealed in the brightness of the lights."
"When one of the light spots shifts from dim to bright and reaches its peak, it will gradually dim again."
"If most of the light spots in the Evolver’s brain become extremely bright, it indicates the optimal time for evolution. At that moment, a bit of external stimulation might lead to an evolution."
"However, if the opportunity is missed, the Evolver will have to wait until the majority of light spots ignite again to have another chance at evolution."
"This light spot is the precursor to evolution, as well as its characteristic."
He seemed quite pleased with his findings. "So far, every Super Evolver I’ve studied has been without exception."
"Meaning, if there’s a device capable of capturing the precursor to evolution, we could accurately trigger an Evolver’s evolution without relying on luck?" Xu Huo asked seriously. "That theory sounds a bit far-fetched."
"If evolutionary precursors or characteristics could be captured, Super Evolution should’ve been mass-producible long ago."
The scarcity of Super Evolvers—and the lack of progress for many over years—is due to the inability to replicate evolutionary methods or repeat evolutive directions. What Tang Guangbo described could be seen as a form of human experimentation, since the best way to test brain states would be to examine it directly. Otherwise, instruments could only detect changes in total psychic power.
Tang Guangbo didn’t deny his statement. Instead, he remarked, "People cannot truly understand one another."
Xu Huo raised an eyebrow. "Are you suggesting we need dissection or some kind of shared empathy between us?"
Tang Guangbo chuckled. "Ordinary human experiments can’t be compared to spirit evolution. Spirit evolution is far more mysterious than other forms of Super Evolution precisely because its paths are uniquely unrepeatable."
"However, its evolutionary characteristics remain definite."
"I can give you a score."
With that, he gestured politely for Xu Huo to proceed.
Xu Huo narrowed his eyes slightly, then activated his Spiritual World, steadily adjusting its intensity. For the first time, he condensed a materialized item into a lethal weapon.
A series of fluid maneuvers took mere seconds.
The towering library he created vanished in an instant. He turned to Tang Guangbo, waiting for the response.
After completing his notes, Tang Guangbo closed his notebook and even began clapping. "As expected of someone who underwent spiritual training in childhood. Your mental state is exceptionally robust, the most vibrant I’ve seen in a patient. This means that as long as the timing is right, you can evolve to the next stage at any moment. It’s one of the reasons why evolution comes so effortlessly to you."
His gaze burned as it fell upon Xu Huo’s forehead. "I must admit, I’m rather intrigued by your brain as well. By all accounts, a person’s mental state shouldn’t constantly stay this elevated. Especially not Super Evolvers, who expend so much evolutionary power—they ought to tire quickly under normal circumstances."
"Maybe it’s because I had plenty of drugs as a kid," Xu Huo said indifferently.
"It seems your childhood mentor was a fan of human experimentation too." Tang Guangbo’s expression grew grave. "But I must remind you, nothing can be used without limit."
Xu Huo paused, then looked at him earnestly. "Feeling like your research career just took a major hit? The evolutionary precursor you mentioned might be influenced by drugs I ingested twenty years ago."
"Haha!" Tang Guangbo threw his head back and laughed heartily, appearing delighted. "Abnormal cases can also be highly valuable for research. Besides, it might not be the drugs at all. Every drug has a metabolic process—especially for Evolvers. Maybe you were born innately gifted, truly exceptional."
"If you’d be willing to come for more treatments, perhaps I could find your evolutionary precursor through subtle differences."
