Chapter 420: Chapter 420: She is My Ex-Wife

Realizing he was being treated as if he were invisible, it upset Luo Tianyang that Chen Wei completely ignored his presence and went to talk to Ning Meng. How could he possibly feel pleased or eager?

He was like a pufferfish at this point, practically about to burst with anger!

Knowing that Chen Wei had some skills in hand-to-hand combat, he decided to learn from his lesson. He didn’t draw his knife, but instead went to draw out...

"Eh! Where’s my gun? Why can’t I find it?" No matter how Luo Tianyang searched, the gun that should have been at his waist was nowhere to be felt—it had truly vanished.

"Are you looking for this?"

Upon hearing that, Luo Tianyang looked up and noticed for the first time that the gun, which should have been in his hand, had somehow ended up in the hands of Chen Wei.

"Give it back!" Luo Tianyang, seeing the situation, prepared to pounce forward to try to snatch the gun away.

Bang!

Chen Wei kicked Luo Tianyang squarely in the chest, sending him flying backward and smashing hard against the tempered glass wall.

It was a good thing it was tempered glass because if it had been any other ordinary glass, Luo Tianyang would have fallen out from the twelfth floor and been killed on the spot.

"Who exactly are you!" Luo Tianyang couldn’t believe that Chen Wei was just some random helper Ning Meng had found. He must have been contacted in advance with all details set.

"Why should I tell you?" Chen Wei responded with a question.

He didn’t plan to reveal his identity to Luo Tianyang; he didn’t deserve it.

"Do you know who my boss is? He’s someone you absolutely can’t afford to mess with! You’d better hand over that woman obediently to us, otherwise..."

Luo Tianyang stopped mid-sentence, which made Ning Meng feel a bit strange. Curious, she asked Chen Wei, "What’s wrong with him?"

"It’s nothing." Chen Wei steadied Ning Meng’s shoulders, helping her to turn around, "We should hurry and leave this place."

"Wait! I’ll take the computer." Ning Meng quickly ran back inside, grabbing the computer.

As she passed by Luo Tianyang, she felt that there was something incredibly odd about him; it was as though he had been frozen, not even blinking an eye.

Dead?

Ning Meng thought that was unlikely; after all, she hadn’t seen Chen Wei fire a gun.

And there were no signs of gunshot wounds on Luo Tianyang’s body.

One could only conclude that Luo Tianyang was playing dumb.

In reality, Chen Wei had used a Silver Needle, and with just one needle, he made sure Luo Tianyang would forever hold his tongue.

Interrogating the rest of the people, who had sent them?

Chen Wei didn’t think it was necessary; these people were clearly just hastily gathered fill-ins for numbers. Now that the true nature of events was known only by Luo Tianyang and Ning Meng...

With Luo Tianyang dead, only Ning Meng was left.

...

"An internet cafe... Why would you think to come to a place like this?" Chen Wei asked curiously.

"I don’t know why, but I always feel safest here." As she spoke, Ning Meng still occasionally scanned the surroundings, watching to see if any suspicious individuals were heading her way.

"So tell me, how did you manage to offend that gang?" Chen Wei cut straight to the chase.

"Do I have to say?" Ning Meng didn’t want to withhold the information from Chen Wei, but she had signed a confidentiality agreement, and leaking it to someone else—if discovered—would mean a breach of contract and a penalty!

"If you don’t tell, the next time you seek me out, I might not pay you any attention," Chen Wei threw down an ultimatum.

Ning Meng instantly caved. The only person she could rely on to keep her safe was Chen Wei.

If Chen Wei ignored her, then the next time something like this occurred, Ning Meng felt she would be extremely unlucky—or rather, there would be only bad luck, with no chance whatsoever of good.

"Alright, I’ll tell you, but you have to promise that you won’t tell anyone else," Ning Meng hesitated and then finally spoke up.

"Mm." Chen Wei nodded in agreement, "Go ahead."

"You know about the Zhao Family of River City?" Ning Meng asked.

"..."

"I know." Chen Wei really wanted to say he didn’t know, but after all, he had once been the Zhao’s son-in-law, so he asked, "What happened to the Zhao Family?"

"What else could happen? Those big families, it’s always about wealth and power. Zhao Xinlian discovered someone in her family embezzling public funds, giving and taking bribes. She wanted to expose them, but how could they possibly let her do that?" Ning Meng replied.

"So, which side are you helping?" Chen Wei asked.

"Of course, I’m siding with Zhao Xinlian, or rather, whoever pays me, I side with them," Ning Meng said as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"So if the other side offers more money, wouldn’t you betray her in a heartbeat?" Chen Wei asked again.

"How could that be! I’m also a person of principle, you know. Just now you saw what they did to me, and I didn’t betray Zhao Xinlian," Ning Meng retorted.

She didn’t want Chen Wei to think of her as someone who lacked integrity.

"I’m just kidding." Seeing that Ning Meng seemed to really be upset, Chen Wei backtracked, "So, Zhao Xinlian discovered bribery and corruption within the Zhao Family, and specifically entrusted you to investigate and gather evidence, right?"

"Right." Ning Meng felt that Chen Wei was trustworthy and didn’t hide anything.

"And those people breaking into your hotel room in the middle of the night was to prevent you from handing over the evidence to Zhao Xinlian?"

"Mm." Ning Meng nodded affirmatively.

"So, how much evidence have you gathered?"

Ning Meng chuckled, "Although they’ve hidden it well, alas, my skills are superior. I’ve obtained almost ninety percent of the evidence. Even if it were only fifty percent, that would be enough for Zhao Xinlian to turn the tables on them."

But the next second, Ning Meng couldn’t smile anymore, "How, how can this be? Where are my files? Why are all the files I saved in the cloud gone?"

She kept refreshing the webpage, but there was still no response, just a blank screen.

It wasn’t just the files about the Zhao Family that were gone, all her files had disappeared.

"It seems that the other side has outsmarted you. You’ve lost," Chen Wei said.

"Ah, why is this happening... I even had an appointment with Boss Zhao to hand over all the evidence to her tomorrow. It’s over now; everything is finished," Ning Meng slumped into the chair.

It could be saved, but there simply wasn’t enough time.

"Oh right!" Ning Meng’s eyes lit up suddenly, remembering she was sitting next to a computer genius. She could totally ask him for help!

Worst case, she would just pay him more.

"Um, great master, could you please help me out one more time?" Ning Meng squeezed out a smile and leaned in to ask Chen Wei.

"No deal!" Chen Wei’s refusal was very decisive.

"Why not? I could give you another million, or, after the job is done, we could split the profits fifty-fifty?"

Seeing Chen Wei still looked indifferent, Ning Meng hardened her heart and said, "Sixty-forty, sixty-forty should be okay, right?"

"Seventy-thirty, you sevent, I thirty?"

"Eighty-twenty?"

"Wouldn’t ninety-ten be too much?"

Seeing her about to cry from frustration, Chen Wei confessed, "It’s not that I don’t want to help you, but I’m not suitable to get involved in this matter."

"Why? Your computer skills are so strong, you can definitely help me recover the data."

"Because your Boss Zhao is my ex-wife, and we only divorced recently."
