Chapter 723: Chapter 549 The First Person Corroded by Darkness
Sigh!
Wang Yang took a deep breath, his grip on the sword tightened, and a cold glint played along the blade as power surged within him unceasingly.
He didn’t know what would appear next, but it was quite clear that this was somewhat different from what he had expected.
Inside the temple, the silence was terrifying, the darkness equally harrowing; it even gave the impression of being an abyss.
The simple setup—a peculiar statue of a deity, along with an intact altar, some black ash on the ground, and eight black pillars supporting the temple with walls covered in ghost charms drawn with black charcoal—filled Wang Yang with dread. The weirdness brought by the silence was the most terrifying aspect; however, Wang Yang understood that he was like a pawn crossing a river.
He had already reached a point of no return and Wang Yang even felt that if he were to step back, he might be decapitated.
Nonetheless, being possessed by Divine Thought, he was not afraid of whatever the darkness might bring about.
Boom!
A sound erupted as a member of the Tiger Army emerged from behind each pillar, all sharing a characteristic: stiff facial expressions with no further changes to their faces.
If it hadn’t been for their eerie appearance, Wang Yang might not have known whether they were Demons and Monsters; but their presence in such a place, and in such a bizarre manner, left no doubt.
No matter what they were, Wang Yang had already sensed the presence of the Origin of Darkness; it was right in this temple, and these members of the Tiger Guard Army, he had no choice but to kill.
"Kill!"
A low growl roared out as a Long Spear was brandished toward the front; it seemed Wang Yang’s Longsword was held at an angle to parry the eight Long Spears coming at him.
"Courting death!"
Wang Yang shouted, his Longsword flicking upward to send the eight Long Spears flying, then with a sweep of his blade and a spin of his body, the eight heads rolled to the ground.
They then turned into wisps of ash, making Wang Yang wonder if someone was playing him from behind. The aura on these men was indeed that of Demons and Monsters, and Wang Yang sensed danger from the peculiar statue.
With gritted teeth, Wang Yang acknowledged that there were few things in this world that could pose a threat to him, and if there were any, it certainly would be the Origin of Darkness.
Now that the statue was making him feel threatened, it was clear that this statue represented the Origin of Darkness.
A flash of light passed through Wang Yang’s eyes as he swept his Longsword, attempting to cleave the statue in two, but soon his sword was halted, unable to move even an inch further.
Upon closer inspection, one would find his Longsword obstructed by a black thread, unable to get any closer.
Instantly, Wang Yang’s pupils contracted as he hurriedly retracted his sword.
However, as he looked around, he noticed that he was completely surrounded by such black threads, dense and endless to sight.
Wang Yang had no choice but to rely on his control to dodge them.
"Who dares to fight me in a fair battle?"
Wang Yang roared in anger, unable to believe that these Demons and Monsters were so shameless as to play him like this, which infuriated him to the core.
"I am Yuanshu, oh no, I serve under Grand Immortal Yang Mei; I am also Yan Xiang."
A middle-aged man appeared from behind the statue, clad in plain clothes, with an ordinary face that wouldn’t stand out in a crowd.
"Yan Xiang!"
Wang Yang muttered the unfamiliar name to himself.
However, he soon managed to find the man’s presence in his memories.
He was the one in the Three Kingdoms who advised Yuanshu not to declare himself Emperor, although it seemed his advice went unheeded.
It was a sad situation indeed.
Similar to Li Feng, it wasn’t that Yuanshu lacked capable men; he simply didn’t know how to recognize and utilize them. In fact, before Li Feng obtained the Origin of Darkness, Yan Xiang had already acquired it.
One could say that Yan Xiang was the first entity on this world to be possessed by it, but given Yan Xiang’s cautious nature, he didn’t accept the possession of the Origin of Darkness until he was truly convinced that Yuanshu was beyond saving.
Eventually, he allowed the Origin of Darkness to transform him into the Demon Clan; the Demon Clan and Demons and Monsters are different entities altogether.
Li Feng could only be considered a Demon, while Yan Xiang belonged to the Demon Clan.
The Demon Clan stands countless Ranks above Demons and Monsters. The power within Yan Xiang was in no way inferior to Wang Yang’s, and Wang Yang understood this, yet he made no move.
Only after stabilizing his stance and sensing the aura on Yan Xiang did Wang Yang realize the amount of Heaven and Earth Essence within his body was sufficient to support him in accomplishing many things.
And the one before him, Yan Xiang, was the true threat. Having had an experience similar to Li Feng, Yan Xiang naturally gave Li Feng the chance to become an Emperor.
At the same time, Yan Xiang kept himself concealed. Understanding control, he refused to become a slave to power. Thus, he didn’t fall to the level of Demons and Monsters and could assert control over his power.
Yan Xiang was capable of refining Heaven and Earth with his Demonic Qi, showcasing the benefit of control. Yan Xiang knew the principle that the outstanding wood becomes a target of the wind.
He was aware of his own limits in strength. While Ge Xiang could destroy a city overnight, he might not be capable of contending against the entire world.
Li Feng made an excellent test. As expected, Li Feng’s power reached its peak for a short while but soon plummeted.
But as the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind, this was where Yan Xiang proved to be smarter than most.
"Probably, there aren’t many people in the world who know of a nameless person like me, right?"
