Journey to the West: Starting from Changing Sun Wukong’s fate -
Chapter 241 - 242 Master, the Monsters Here Are All Afraid of You
Chapter 241: Chapter 242 Master, the Monsters Here Are All Afraid of You
At this time, inside the Boeuf-dong Cave just outside White Tiger Ridge in the Treasured Elephant Country, one person was feeling rather anxious.
With a dark blue face and white, sharp teeth,
Chaotic, messy sideburns framed his face, and three or four towering purple beards dangled beneath.
His nose resembled a parrot’s beak, and his eyes sparkled with life, twinkling like stars.
Two fists, each the size of a monk’s alms bowl, matched his blue feet.
A pale yellow robe draped asymmetrically over his body, he wielded a knife that shone brilliantly, emanating an intimidating air.
Despite his formidable and fearsome appearance, he was overcome with worry, seeming to be concerned about something.
He paced back and forth in the cave, his face etched with anxiety and unease.
The Yellow Robed Monster had a clear idea of what he was supposed to do next: to become a part of the Calamity of Measurement, to impede Xuanzang and his three companions on their journey. However, recent events on White Tiger Ridge had come to his knowledge.
Normally, dealing with such a group of four would hardly be of any consequence.
He had remained calm, simply waiting to fulfill the requirements of the Celestial Court.
And so, he had been keeping an eye on the situation of Lady White Bone on White Tiger Ridge. Her strength was commendable, especially her Art of Transformation, which he himself could not match. To his shock, Xuanzang’s disciple had not made a move.
It was Xuanzang alone who took action, directly converting Lady White Bone.
This revelation left the Yellow Robed Monster astonished.
His own past had been quite illustrious.
He was a participant in the Divine Enthronement Calamity, a disciple of the Cutting Teachings Sect. Later, he perished in the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation and was enshrined in the Investiture of the Gods.
He was even named as one of the Twenty-Eight Constellations, the Kui Wood Wolf.
The reason for his presence here was ostensibly due to his secret liaison with a Jade Maiden of the Fragrance Spreading Hall, but in truth, it was all because the Celestial Court intended for him to descend to the lower realm and become a part of this Calamity of Measurement.
Originally, he thought that facing the four monks in this tribulation would be an easy task, and there might even be an opportunity to gain merit.
Now, unexpectedly, without the Great Sage Equalling Heaven lifting a finger, a monk whose name is otherwise unknown had effortlessly converted Lady White Bone.
If they were to come here, would there be any good outcomes awaiting him?
Thinking back on Lady White Bone’s fate on White Tiger Ridge — how she insisted on consuming Xuanzang’s flesh, only to be forcibly converted and end up leaving behind only tears of regret, feigning a smile through gritted teeth — Kui Wood Wolf felt nothing but horror.
Could it be that he too was destined to be converted by Xuanzang?
After all, he was someone from the Cutting Teachings Sect and had no desire to be so easily converted to Buddhism.
"I, the mighty Kui Wood Wolf, how can I fall into such a predicament!" he declared.
He looked towards the direction of the Celestial Court, his eyes filled with resentment.
This so-called Calamity of Measurement, let whoever wishes to participate, participate.
I no longer want the merit associated with this Calamity of Measurement.
The eyes of Kui Wood Wolf were resolute.
Soon after, he transformed into a gust of yellow wind and fled directly from Boeuf-dong Cave.
At the Celestial Court, in the Ninth celestial Palace,
the Jade Emperor was seated high on his throne in the Golden Palace.
"Next up should be the part of the Calamity of Measurement arranged by our Celestial Court, Kui Wood Wolf, right?" he said.
The Celestial Court and the Western Buddhist Sect had jointly orchestrated the Calamity of Measurement, and this arrangement had long been agreed upon with the West. The previous part involving the White Bone Fairy was arranged by the West; this time, naturally, it was the turn of their Celestial Court.
The ease with which Xuanzang had converted the White Bone Fairy had made the Deities of the Celestial Court chuckle.
It’s ridiculous that Buddhism claimed that the four travelers could not proceed too easily when the outcome appeared to be quite laughable.
"Yes, Your Majesty, next is our own arrangement with Kui Wood Wolf!"
Pagoda-Carrying celestial King Li stepped forward, speaking with due respect; being from the Western Direction, he naturally would not blatantly assist the Western Buddhist Sect.
"How is this Kui Wood Wolf doing?" inquired the Jade Emperor, nodding with a satisfied expression.
Taibai Jinxing, at that moment, calculated with his fingers and his expression changed as if he had already foreseen Kui Wood Wolf’s defection.
However, he chose not to speak, preferring not to get involved in the tribulation any further, lest it cause trouble for him.
"Your Majesty, there is trouble! Kui Wood Wolf has abandoned his post and fled, showing no regard for our Celestial Court. If the Western Buddhist Sect were to learn of this, wouldn’t they mock us?"
Pagoda-Carrying celestial King Li frowned at the realization of what had happened with Kui Wood Wolf.
"What?"
The Jade Emperor’s complexion turned unsightly upon hearing this.
The atmosphere in the grand hall became extremely tense.
By now, many of the Orthodox Deities in the hall were aware of Kui Wood Wolf’s resolute departure, expressing blatant disregard for the Celestial Court.
The Jade Emperor’s brows furrowed as he neared the brink of rage; after all, they had originally thought the Western Direction’s earlier tribulation to be insignificant, yet their own appointed tribulation had fled even before meeting the Journey to the West companions.
If word of this got out to the Western Buddhist Sect, wouldn’t they mock their incompetence?
The numerous Orthodox Deities below trembled beneath the Jade Emperor’s wrath, none daring to utter a word.
Some Deities who had a good relationship with Kui Wood Wolf felt conflicted. How could Kui Wood Wolf dare to flee? He could have simply gone through the motions.
Why escape and invite certain pursuit for his capture?
Fortunately, Kui Wood Wolf was after all from the Cutting Teachings Sect, and under that sect’s authority, the Jade Emperor wouldn’t go so far as to kill Kui Wood Wolf.
"Your Majesty, this Kui Wood Wolf had an affair with a maid from the Fragrance Spreading Hall and later descended to the lower realm without permission, clearly violating celestial rules!"
"If he had cooperated with the tribulation, he could have earned redemption for his crimes, but to think that Kui Wood Wolf would forsake the tribulation and choose to flee—an even greater offense—Your Majesty, please issue an order for us to capture Kui Wood Wolf. In doing so, we can bolster the integrity and might of the celestial rules!"
At this point, Pagoda-Carrying celestial King Li stepped forward, standing inside the grand hall and spoke with due reverence.
He was most concerned about the major affairs of Buddhism, and naturally, he wouldn’t miss an opportunity to show his commitment.
The Jade Emperor looked down at Li Jing and nodded before saying, "Dispatch the Twenty-Seven Constellations to the lower realm to capture Kui Wood Wolf!"
The Jade Emperor’s voice was indifferent, echoing throughout the Ninth Celestial Palace.
Following the order, Pagoda-Carrying Celestial King Li Jing proceeded to summon the Twenty-Seven Constellations.
They then descended to the lower realm to capture Kui Wood Wolf.
...
Xuanzang and his three disciples rode swiftly away from White Tiger Ridge.
They had gained a new understanding of Xuanzang.
Zhu Bajie and Sha Seng had thought their master to be a frail being, but to their surprise, he possessed such formidable strength.
He was even capable of converting some powerful demons, a feat that exceeded their imaginations.
With the deterrent presence of Sun Wukong and others, ordinary demons and monsters did not dare approach.
After all, both Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie exuded a strong demonic aura, stopping regular demons from coming near to avoid trouble.
So even Kui Wood Wolf fled upon hearing rumors of their approach, for their strength was not to be taken lightly.
Any rational being would understand that these four individuals would not be troubled, the tragic ones were others.
In the Three Realms where no Saint made themselves known.
At this time, Quasi-Saints were considered the pinnacle of combat power. Among various powers, they were the foundation; for a Calamity of Measurement, such beings would not normally descend to the lower realm to become part of it.
Thus, the journey was peaceful.
The four travelers reached Wanzhi Mountain in the Treasured Elephant Country. Sun Wukong halted as he looked at the mountain peak.
"I’ve never seen such a mountain!"
"It looks like an ancient pagoda!"
Zhu Bajie, standing beside him, couldn’t help but echo the sentiment.
"There aren’t any monsters, are there?"
Sha Seng, though worried, despite knowing that their eldest brother was the Great Sage Equalling Heaven, and their second brother was Marshal Tianpeng, their master could alone convert a demon.
He was still concerned about potential unforeseen circumstances.
"Why do I feel a sense of familiarity with an aura from within the mountain?"
Zhu Bajie seemed to sense something and spoke in confusion.
As the former Marshal Tianpeng, he was somewhat familiar with the aura of the deities of the Celestial Court.
After a careful sensing, he had detected a familiar aura, one that originated from the Celestial Court.
"Celestial Court’s aura?"
Sun Wukong gazed towards Boeuf-dong Cave atop Wanzhi Mountain, thoughtful and looking up towards the direction of the Celestial Court in confusion.
Could it be that the immortals of the Celestial Court have descended to the lower realm?
Have immortals become so undervalued now?
Of course, even so, he was not concerned.
Five hundred years ago, he had been able to wreak Havoc in Heaven using a clone, let alone handle immortals descending to the lower realm.
The group of four continued on, passing through the mountain path. They encountered several little demons, but no powerful members of the Demon Race.
Soon, they came upon the open doors of Boeuf-dong Cave.
Sun Wukong was the first to enter.
The inside was filled with Monster Energy; expecting to fight monsters, they were surprised to find only two or three little demons.
Upon seeing Sun Wukong, the demons were so scared they escaped in a mad flurry.
Zhu Bajie, Xuanzang, and Sha Seng also came over to take a look.
They found that although there were traces of someone having lived in Boeuf-dong Cave, it now seemed as if it had been abandoned.
It was as if someone had been there and then fled with their family after encountering something.
"Hmm, there’s a strong Celestial Court aura here; someone must have been here before!"
Zhu Bajie sniffed the air and slowly spoke.
He could clearly sense that the scent belonged to someone from the Celestial Court, but it was unclear why they had run away.
"Could it be they saw us coming and fled?"
Sha Seng couldn’t help speculating.
"That’s unlikely. They were here to wait for us!"
Zhu Bajie shook his head. The deities of the Celestial Court were well aware of their strength; since they had been here for so long, it meant they had confidence, yet now they had fled.
Zhu Bajie involuntarily turned to look at Xuanzang.
That seemed to be the only possible explanation.
Sha Seng and Sun Wukong also turned their gazes towards Xuanzang.
"Why do my three disciples look at me this way?"
Xuanzang brought his palms together and uttered "Amitabha Buddha."
"Master, I think the monsters here are afraid of you, fearing that you’d convert them. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have left all these things behind!"
Zhu Bajie said with a sly smile.
Sun Wukong and Sha Seng nodded in agreement.
