Chapter 239: Chapter 240: The Poor Monk Can Only Convert the Benefactor
"Elder, we are almost there, my home is just ahead!"
The White Bone Fairy was leading the way for Xuanzang, heading towards the White Bone Cave.
The White Bone Fairy didn’t expect Xuanzang would so easily agree to accompany her to her home.
So, while leading Xuanzang to the White Bone Cave, she had already transformed her abode into what appeared to be an ordinary mountain village dwelling.
Her Art of Transformation, after all, came from her seniors, making the transformation of the White Bone Cave into an ordinary mountain village home a mere trifle.
Of course, in her view, if Xuanzang couldn’t even see through her disguise, how could he possibly detect her Art of Transformation?
"Amitabha Buddha, Benefactor, there is no need to hurry!"
Xuanzang’s steps were steady as he calmly followed behind the White Bone Fairy.
He followed the White Bone Fairy to see if she indeed had a kind heart. If she did, he naturally wouldn’t take action.
After all, his disciples were demons too, and demons could be good or bad. If the White Bone Fairy turned out not to be benevolent, he naturally wouldn’t let her be and would assuredly convert her.
"Not to worry, not to worry, it’s just that there are still some matters at home that need attention, and I’m afraid my parents are waiting!"
The White Bone Fairy glanced back at Xuanzang. To her, he was the key to immortality, and today, she hoped to fulfill her desire.
Just one bite of Xuanzang’s flesh would grant her everlasting life, carefree existence across the Three Realms. Faced with such temptation, it was likely that no demon could remain unflustered!
Therefore, the White Bone Fairy was indeed in a hurry, wishing to consume Xuanzang as soon as possible to avoid any complications.
Fortunately, she wasn’t far from White Bone Cave, and soon they arrived.
"Here we are, Elder, please come in!"
Shortly along the way, the White Bone Fairy could already see the White Bone Cave ahead, her mouth watering.
It seemed she could already savor Xuanzang.
Upon hearing her words, Xuanzang couldn’t help but look up, only to see several thatched cottages and a wooden fence making a yard ahead, with chickens and ducks roaming around inside, presenting a peaceful rural scene.
Any ordinary person would simply assume this place to be just another ordinary homestead.
Yet in Xuanzang’s eyes, while his cultivation level might not seem very high, after partaking of the Ginseng Fruit and pondering over Buddhist Law several times, he himself did not even know what realm he had achieved.
He could even see the true nature of things.
To him, the seemingly peaceful scene in front of his eyes was fraught with danger.
The modest thatched cottages instantly transformed into a dark cave, and upon it were boldly inscribed the three characters: White Bone Cave.
The wooden fence was nothing more than a clump of wild grass growing around the mountain cave.
The chickens and ducks inside were actually the venomous snakes, scorpions, and centipedes crawling within the cave.
Realizing this, Xuanzang had some idea that the White Bone Fairy wasn’t truly intent on seeking the path of Buddha.
Not only did he feel not a trace of Buddhist aura, what was present was terrifying slaughter and sin.
"Amitabha Buddha, Lady Benefactor, did you really bring this humble monk here to meet your parents?"
Xuanzang pressed his palms together and calmly chanted a Buddha’s name.
"Of course, Elder, please come in quickly, don’t keep my parents waiting too long!"
The White Bone Fairy had no idea that Xuanzang had discovered the truth and still urged him on impatiently.
She hoped to get Xuanzang inside quickly and then deal with the matter promptly.
...
Meanwhile, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, who had followed, hid in the distance, observing the whole scene.
"Oh my, what a sin, I didn’t expect our Master to falter like this, to be so easily bewitched by a Female Bodhisattva!"
Zhu Bajie shook his head, still holding the lunch the White Bone Fairy had provided.
Even though Xuanzang was enthralled by the White Bone Fairy, wasn’t Bajie also attracted by the vegetarian meal?
"Elder Brother, shall we just stand by and watch? They’re about to go in; if they really do what they intend, we’ll have difficulty explaining ourselves!"
Sha Wujing was extremely anxious at the sight and hoped to intervene.
Arguably, he was the only one amongst them truly committed to the Journey to the West. But if Xuanzang had already been transformed like this, they might all have to return to their own homes.
"What would you have us do?"
Zhu Bajie looked towards Sha Wujing and continued, "We can’t stop our Master, can we? Let’s just finish this vegetarian meal first!"
Zhu Bajie was too embarrassed to hog it all for himself; otherwise, he probably would have already started eating.
"Elder Brother, how could I possibly eat at a time like this?"
Sha Wujing was frowning at the thought. He couldn’t just let things proceed like this, especially since he felt utterly unable to eat. If the emperor knew what was happening, he couldn’t even imagine the punishment he’d receive.
"Well, if you’re not going to eat, then I will!"
Zhu Bajie shook his head with disappointment, then stared at the vegetarian meal in his hand.
"What are you two doing here?"
Just then, a voice suddenly resonated.
Following that, a figure appeared behind them.
This person was none other than Sun Wukong.
Clatter!
Zhu Bajie, startled by the voice, accidentally dropped his lunch, which scattered on the ground.
The vegetarian meal spread out everywhere.
Upon witnessing this scene, Zhu Bajie felt a pang of sadness in his heart.
"Brother, what are you doing? You scared me, and now we have nothing to eat. Look at this fine vegetarian meal!"
Zhu Bajie glanced at Sun Wukong and complained incessantly.
He nearly reached out to grab the food on the ground.
Sun Wukong grabbed Zhu Bajie’s hand and said, "If it weren’t for the White Dragon Horse telling me you had come here, Old Sun really wouldn’t have been able to find you!"
"Brother, why did you choose to come neither early nor late but just when I was about to eat? My vegetarian meal!"
Zhu Bajie looked at the vegetarian meal on the ground, his mouth watering.
"You dare to eat this stuff?"
Sun Wukong glanced at it and couldn’t help but say with a laugh.
"Why wouldn’t I dare? Look how good these vegetarian dishes are; they look so delicious! Why wouldn’t Old Pig dare to eat?"
Zhu Bajie was somewhat dissatisfied. Although he didn’t care much about his master or the Journey to the West, he certainly hoped not to waste food.
"You can shove off, you simpleton. Take another look, what is this?"
With a wave of his hand, Sun Wukong’s mighty power transformed the apparently delicious vegetarian meal into poisonous snakes, centipedes, and scorpions in the blink of an eye.
Zhu Bajie staggered back in fright.
"It seems what Master said is true; that Lady Benefactor really is a monster. We must go save Master!"
Shocked by what he saw, Sand Monk spoke up.
He hurriedly prepared to rush out to save his master.
But just as he took his first step, Sun Wukong grabbed his hand.
"What’s the rush? Let’s see what tricks our Master has up his sleeve first!"
Sun Wukong said with a smile and a wave of his hand.
"You monkey, don’t tell me you’re saying this because you don’t want to take action!"
Zhu Bajie glanced again at the venomous insects and scorpions and retorted.
Sun Wukong coughed dryly, not expecting his little scheme to be discovered.
Of course, he would never admit it.
"Don’t you want to see what skills our Master possesses? The transformation that even you two failed to see through was actually seen through by him!"
Sun Wukong argued.
Hearing Sun Wukong’s words, Sand Monk also nodded and said, "Yes, our Master is so skilled. How come he possesses such great power, able to see through a transformation that even we could not?"
Sand Monk calmed down, no longer eager to intervene. With such a powerful master, did they even need to act?
Zhu Bajie also looked over, wanting to see what remarkable abilities their Master had, and he hoped that Master would severely punish the White Bone Fairy. It was too wicked of her to disguise such dangers as vegetarian dishes; he had almost eaten them.
At the moment, the White Bone Fairy was still trying to coax Xuanzang into the White Bone Cave.
Seeing Xuanzang stop, she couldn’t help but become anxious.
"Benefactor, do not deceive this poor monk. Clearly, this is a cave, and it does not house your parents. How can you claim that your parents enjoy Buddhist law?"
Xuanzang shook his head, hoping that the White Bone Fairy in front of him would not persist in her delusion, or else she was on the verge of downfall.
Hearing Xuanzang’s words, the White Bone Fairy was startled. Had her art of transformation been seen through by Xuanzang?
Impossible, her art of transformation was such that even powerful demons and monsters could not see through it. How could a monk in green clothes see through it?
The White Bone Fairy found it hard to believe.
"Elder, do not talk nonsense. What cave? This is clearly our village!"
The White Bone Fairy refused to believe, thinking Xuanzang was simply bluffing to elicit the truth out of her.
"It seems the benefactor still wishes to remain deluded. Amitabha Buddha!"
Xuanzang brought his hands together and intoned the name of the Buddha.
As his voice fell, a vast breath flowed from him. It seemed as though countless Buddha’s shadows were gathering behind him. These shadows converged in an instant, and in a flash of golden light, a rich power of Buddhist law filled the air.
In a moment, the Buddhist law spread, the powerful force of Buddhist law altering the powers of transformation around them.
The village that was actually the White Bone Cave had its disguise torn away, reverting to its original form, and all semblance of peaceful serenity was gone.
Clearly, it was a den of evil, far from any peaceful serenity.
"You, you saw through me from the beginning?"
The White Bone Fairy saw the changes that had taken place and stepped back repeatedly, staring at Xuanzang incredulously.
Xuanzang slowly nodded, his expression calm.
Seeing Xuanzang nod, the White Bone Fairy was shocked. She looked at Xuanzang as if she was seeing him for the first time.
She realized she had severely underestimated Xuanzang’s strength.
With merely a single incantation of Buddha’s name, he had shown such tremendous strength. He was clearly one with Great Divine Power.
And her relied-upon art of transformation had long been seen through by the Golden Cicada.
She backed up a few steps, looking at Xuanzang warily and said, "Since you’ve already seen through that I am a demon, why did you still come with me?"
"I had thought you were a good demon, and I intended to exchange Buddhist teachings with you. Sadly, it seems you only wished to devour me," said Xuanzang.
"Then, I can only endeavor to convert you!"
