Chapter 91: Homewrecker alert
Chapter 91: Homewrecker alert
The rhythmic hum of the engine filled the truck’s interior as Sky skillfully navigated the city streets. Rachel occupied the passenger seat, engaged in an animated conversation with Sky about their day, while Chris and Rain sat side by side in the backseat. Chris’s eyes occasionally met Sky’s in the rearview mirror, and for some reason, Chris was always the first to look away. The stare made him uncomfortable since Rain was sitting very close to him.
Why did he feel like a cheating partner when he wasn’t cheating and, most especially, when he had no partner?
Rain’s voice continued to fill the air, her curiosity seemingly boundless as she bombarded Chris with questions about his time at the police station and what exactly had happened. She was also curious to know what had transpired between him and Ash that day of the party since it had come as a surprise to hear he hit Ash. Chris did his best to respond with good humour, a smile playing on his lips as he recounted his brief stint as an "ex-convict." Chris didn’t delve deeply into what had transpired between himself and Ash. He simply left it simple that Ash had done something stupid.
As the truck pulled up to the entrance of the ladies’ dormitory building, Sky turned off the engine, and the chatter gradually subsided. Rachel unbuckled her seatbelt and stepped out of the truck first while Rain opened the back door, and after she stepped out, Chris stepped out after her and offered her a grateful smile. "Thanks for reaching out. It was nice seeing you tonight."
Rain’s cheeks tinged pink, and she returned his smile.
Chris noted she was getting more drawn to him by the day, and the realization made him very uncomfortable, even though it was what he had aimed for initially.
"I didn’t exactly do anything. It was all thanks to Rachel. But I’m hoping if you’re in trouble next time, you will not hesitate to call me. My family has lived in this town for a really long time. We have quite a connection." She winked at him.
"I will always remember that and use your family’s influence as much as I can. Although I hope I don’t get into this kind of trouble again," he added lightly, making Rain laugh, and then she locked eyes with him.
Chris’s reflexes had always been good. But they were exceptionally great tonight because when Rain stretched to drop a random peck on his lips, he was quick to turn his head away and have it land on his left cheek instead.
And where exactly did he turn his gaze?
Sky’s direction.
Sky was the only one left in the car and was watching the scene through the window, his lips in a thin line.
There was a moment of sudden awkwardness between all of them, including Rachel, who had witnessed the scene, and Chris was not sure how to handle this. Thankfully, Rain spoke up first.
"Take care of yourself, Chris." She said with a tight smile before she waved at her brother, "Drive safely." She said this to him before turning away quickly and leaving for the building.
Rachel mouthed something to Chris, which he didn’t catch before she also turned and walked away, trying to catch up with Rain.
Chris just stood there, watching them leave.
Well, that had been... awkward.
"Aren’t you coming in?" Sky asked, blowing the horn once.
Chris turned to him and was about to open the backseat door when Sky honked again, startling him.
"I don’t remember being your driver. Come to the front."
"Rude," Chris muttered as he went to take the front seat instead.
It was the first time he was occupying the front seat of the truck beside Sky. Sky drove quietly. The air seemed charged with a blend of emotions, and the unspoken words between them were heavy and palpable. Chris turned to Sky, not sure what he was supposed to say about what happened just now, wondering if Sky was mad at him for leading his sister on despite telling him to stay away from her? Or maybe there was a tiny part of him that was jealous, considering he’d been staring at them the entire time?
However, Sky briefly glanced at him and then spoke softly. "I’m really glad you’re okay, Chris."
Well, that was unexpected.
As usual, whenever Sky made him feel a certain way, it was always easier for him when he played it off lightly. "I am honoured to have made you worried." He replied lightly.
However, there was no trace of amusement on Sky’s face. Instead, he looked frustrated. He glanced at him again briefly before he faced the road and began to speak. "I know you are annoyed about this. But you should really avoid Ash. He is crazy. For real."
Chris looked at him closely. He could tell there was something big there that Sky was not willing to talk about. Not only because their families were entangled. He wanted so badly to ask questions, but he didn’t. The best way to have answers was to not be desperate for them.
"I will consider your advice. If he doesn’t bother me, I won’t bother him."
"He won’t. I will handle it. Just... just focus on studying, okay?"
Chris’s gaze lingered on his side profile, his lips curving into a faint smile. It was nice to have someone care for him.
Was this how women felt when they had reliable boyfriends?
He wasn’t like saying Sky was his boyfriend and he was the girlfriend or whatever... but you get the gist?
"Do you want ice cream?" Sky asked, breaking into his thoughts.
Chris looked up. "That was random."
Sky let out a small laugh. "We are about to pass a fast food. They have really nice ice cream."
"How did you know that?" Chris asked just to tease him.
"Because I go there?" Sky briefly glanced at him and said in a tone Chris could interpret as ’How else should I have known that?’
"With whom?" Chris pressed.
Sky only gave him a half-smile before he pulled over by the roadside.
"It shouldn’t matter since you’re the one with me right now, pretty boy." He concluded with a wink that made Chris scoff.
Why did he always forget that Sky was better than him at this?
"Want to have it there or take it with you?" Sky asked just as he opened the door.
Chris looked at the time on his phone screen. He didn’t want to be locked out.
"I’ll take it." He said and was about to open the door when Sky spoke up.
"Just wait in here. I’ll be quick with it."
Chris looked at him, trying to suppress his smile. ’Fuck! I should date this guy.’ He said in his head as he nodded and remained in his seat while Sky left.
Watching Sky’s retreating figure made a smile play at his lips, but then the smile quickly disappeared when a voice whispered in his head that Sky was engaged. And maybe it was the girl that he had brought here with him.
He shook that demonic thought out of his head.
So what if he had a Fiancée? He was not married.
And there was something called snatching. Even if everyone decided to label him a homewrecker, he didn’t care what people said about him anyway.
He was not going to be a victim of this for the second time. Someone else had to get hurt. Not him.
Chris’s gaze followed Sky from when he stepped out until he joined him inside the car. He also witnessed how a girl from the fast food restaurant tried to openly flirt with him outside and how Sky walked away without giving her any attention. He was very rude. Sexily rude.
Sky handed him the fancy bag from the fast food restaurant. "I wanted to order a box of pizza, but they mentioned it would take a while. I’m not sure delivery would be possible, so I got you some sausages with the ice cream. So you have to manage this for tonight, and I’ll send you something in the morning before you go off to class. Your class starts at 10, right?"
Chris watched his lips the entire time as they moved, fighting a battle in his head over whether or not he should shut him up with a kiss because Sky was just so annoying but very lovable.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" Sky said, cutting into his wild thoughts. Again.
He found his eyes and noticed the suspicious stare Sky was giving him.
Chris relaxed in his seat as he said, "I just think having a sugar daddy take care of me is nice." He joked.
Sky laughed adorably. "Well, you agreed to be my sugar baby, so it’s the least I can do." He said it in a light tone as he started the car.
Chris looked at him intensely.
Nah. He was definitely going to snatch this guy. Whether or not Sky liked boys.
Whether or not Sky liked him.
