Chapter 229: Surprise
Chapter 229: Surprise
Rachel was not letting go.
Her tone was gentle. More like she was reminding him rather than accusing him or judging him.
"You are out here. But when school is on, we all have things to face. You. Chris. Me..." she added the last part quietly. "And it won’t be fun." She sighed. "Maybe Chris would have it easier. He’s Christopher Owen. The world currently adores him. He basks in his sexuality. His family supports him. His friends too. But us..." she looked at him. Her gaze was filled with sadness and pity.
"You are Sky Sato." She reminded him. "When you return to school, and it gets overwhelming..." She met his eyes. "Are you going to run when it gets hard?"
Sky sat down. Slowly. And he cradled the mug in his palms like it would help him put himself in order. If it were someone else asking him these questions, he’d probably tell them to fuck off. The same way he had treated Ash. They had no right to comment on whatever was going on between he and Chris. But he knew he had to face this. And he simply could not brush Rachel’s concerns off and tell her to focus on her own problem.
He could tell himself now that he could do it. He wanted to go full exclusive. Wanted to be ’IT’ with Chris. But he wasn’t sure what would happen when they returned. When he had to face school. People. His family.
He could not find the right words to say.
"Look who we have here!" Chris’s voice cut through the room like a warm breeze.
Sky’s head snapped up.
Chris stood in the doorway, hair a chaotic mess, eyes still puffy with sleep, but his smile was pure sunshine—and it was aimed at Rachel.
Sky wasn’t sure how long he had been there or how much he had listened. But something told him Chris must have heard some of their conversation.
Rachel smiled when she saw him. She stood up, and he opened his arms. At once, she embraced him. It was as if she were both chuckling and sobbing, and like a good anchor, be held her close, rubbing her hair gently.
Sky was not jealous. Of course not.
Okay... maybe a little.
But he had bigger issues. Because his conversation with Rachel had gotten into his head. One.
Two, Chris suddenly showing up was not helping matters because he could tell Chris must have heard them and probably came in then not to make things awkward.
What did Chris think about his hesitation to answer?
And also Chris was not looking at him—
Chris turned to face him just then. Oh, okay.
And as soon as their eyes met, every other thought flew away, and the only thing left in his head was last night. What had happened last night between them.
Chris looked at him. An intense and burning look that made Sky very uncomfortable for some reason. Then he saw the smirk. The tiny smirk. Like he knew what Sky was thinking about, and he was thinking the same.
Sky could feel his face burning, and he quickly looked away and looked down into his mug.
"Have you had breakfast yet?" Chris asked Rachel when he broke free from the hug.
"Not yet." She said quietly while using her sleeves to wipe her eyes clean.
Okay, that did make Sky snap his head back up to look at Chris because why didn’t Chris ask him that, too?
Chris smiled at Rachel, soft and warm, and said, "I’ll ring up the chef. He can whip something up before the others get here. I spoke with Wilson already and they will be arriving pretty soon." Then he gave her a serious look as he asked, "Will you be okay?"
Sky knew he was asking her that because Noel was also coming.
Rachel nodded. "I’ll be fine."
She then glanced between them—him and Sky—and something flickered in her gaze. Then she murmured, "I’ll be inside," and padded away, the gentle thud of her slippers echoing softly behind her.
The moment she disappeared, a fragile silence bloomed between the boys.
They stood there, unsure. Like magnets hovering just before they clicked.
Chris was the one who broke it.
"...Hi," he said, voice lighter than before, a little unsure. Almost sheepish.
Sky gave a small huff of breath and brushed the side of his neck absently—where faint marks still tingled under his skin. "Hi."
Chris rubbed the back of his neck, glancing to the side. "I haven’t slept that deeply in a while."
Sky tilted his head slightly. "You must’ve been exhausted."
Chris’s lips twitched. "I must have been happy."
Silence.
A beat passed.
His eyes snapped up to Chris’s face just as Chris slowly looked at him, that glint in his gaze unmistakable. The smirk that followed was small. Dangerous. Fond.
Sky opened his mouth—possibly to say something. He wasn’t even sure what he wanted to say. But just then the air was split by the roar of an engine revving outside.
Both boys turned toward the window at the same time.
The others were here.
And just like that, the charged quiet between them scattered like dust in the wind.
Chris headed toward the door, and Sky followed. When they stepped out, the others were also getting out of the cars. Two cars were parked outside, one driven by Wilson and the other by Jack. Chris wasn’t even sure when Wilson had arranged all of this.
Wilson was one reliable son of a bitch and he needed to appreciate him more.
Sky’s friends were here.
Henry.
Noel.
Rain.
They didn’t look or sound as chaotic like they usually were. Everyone looked serious.
And wait a minute... was that... Mei?
Sky was surprised as soon as he saw her get down. He had no idea she was coming. No one told him anything about it.
"Surprise!" She beamed as soon as she stepped out, her gaze fixed on Sky.
"What the fuck?" Chris muttered quietly before he turned to look at Sky beside him.
