Chapter 184: I don’t want to risk anything

Mei studied him, her expression unreadable. Then she asked, "Does Chris even want to date you?"

"He said... he said he wants me," Sky replied, his voice barely a whisper.

She tilted her head. "Did he say he loves you?"

Sky hesitated, his gaze flickering away. "I... I don’t know," he admitted, his voice thick with emotion. "It doesn’t matter."

"It matters to me," Mei countered, her voice firm.

"He’s open about wanting to be with me," Sky said, his voice gaining strength. "That’s more than I ever expected."

Mei raised an eyebrow. "You sell yourself short. You are willing to accept any crumbs he gives you?"

"I think I’m the one who has been giving him crumbs." He said in Chris’s defense.

He had seen it. He could tell that Chris wouldn’t mind being open. But he on the other hand...

Mei let out a slow breath. "And what about you? Do you want to date Chris and overlook everything?"

That was the problem.

Sky’s heart pounded in his chest. His emotions were tangled in a mess of guilt, longing, and fear. He pressed his fingers against his temples, exhaling sharply. "I’ll think about those things later," he murmured, his voice strained. "I just... I need to know what you think."

Mei studied him in silence, her sharp eyes taking in every twitch of his fingers, every uneven breath. She always saw through him. He hated that. Sometimes, he liked that she was there for him and could understand.

He clenched his jaw. "I want to tell Chris. About us. About how this wasn’t real. Fuck!" His swore, panic creeping in. "I don’t want to risk anything."

He wanted Chris. With intensity. The thought of Chris slipping away, of losing him filled him with a panic he couldn’t control.

"I know I messed up," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I know I hurt you. I promised to be with you forever. To protect you. But I can’t... I can’t lose Chris."

He looked at Mei, his eyes pleading for understanding. "Please, Mei. Tell me what to do. Say something?"

Her silence was unnerving.

Mei regarded Sky with a mixture of pity and exasperation. "Have you really thought this through, Sky?" she asked, her voice laced with concern. "Even if you manage to keep things hidden for now, people will find out eventually. I know you." She looked at him intensely.

"The moment you go fully into this, it would be difficult for people not to see how much you burn for him. You can’t keep it hidden Sky Sato." She lectured. "And it won’t just be your family you have to worry about. Can you protect Chris from everyone else? Can you protect yourself?"

Sky’s throat tightened. He hadn’t expected her to bring all that up, but of course, she would.

"I won’t let anything happen to Chris," he said firmly, gripping his jeans so hard his knuckles turned white. "I’ll take care of him."

Mei raised an eyebrow. "And what about Sinclair? And Rachel? And all the others? They’ve been bothering you, haven’t they?"

She paused, her gaze softening. "And what about your insecurities, Sky? Always worrying about how these people can best take care of Chris if they took him away from you. Isn’t that why you’ve been working so many part-time jobs lately? To squander it on him like a desperate sugar daddy wanting to get his saggy cock sucked?"

He winced.

Sky opened his mouth, but no words came out. He hadn’t even admitted that to himself.

Mei sighed, rubbing her temples. "You’re such an idiot."

He was an idiot. He knew that. But he couldn’t stop himself. However, his heart ached looking at Mei, at the girl he had sworn to protect, the girl he hadn’t needed to much to convince himself he could live with forever even though Sky did not like her family.

But now, he couldn’t even pretend to stay with her anymore. His thoughts were always somewhere else. Always with Chris. The way he smiled, the way his fingers brushed against his wrist when they sat close, the way his voice lingered in his head long after they parted. The way he kissed him. Pulled him aggressively.

"It’s fine, Sky," Mei said, her voice laced with a weary acceptance.

His gaze snapped to her.

"To be honest, I’m exhausted too. Tired of all the lies and secrets. Ash gets to do whatever the hell he wants. But me? I have to be the obedient daughter, the perfect one, the one who never messes up."

She sighed, a sound filled with a deep, underlying frustration. "I want to separate, Sky," she said, her voice firm. "From you, from this... charade."

Time seemed to have stood still as soon as she said those words and they just stared at each other for a long time.

"What... about your father?" Sky asked, his voice filled with concern.

Mei’s expression hardened. "Fuck him," she said, her voice laced with a surprising venom. "I’m an adult. I can cut ties from my family and still live well. I don’t need their money, their approval, their... control."

Sky stared at her, his throat dry. "Mei..."

She looked at Sky, her eyes softening. "Don’t worry about me, Sky. I’ll be fine. And honestly, I’m happy for you. Happy that you’ve found someone you... love deeply."

Sky hesitated. "I didn’t say anything about love," he mumbled, his cheeks flushing.

Mei scoffed, a wry smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Yeah, right," she said, rolling her eyes. "Maybe I should have just said ’obsession’."

Sky looked away, gripping his knee. He wanted to deny it. He wanted to argue. But he couldn’t. Because she was right.

"Do you think your parents would like it?" Mei asked quietly, hugging her knees.

Sky took on the same posture as he said, "I don’t know. But my family loves you."

He didn’t bother to ask about what her family would think. He already knew they hated him. And especially her father, he hated his guts too.

They silence was quite heavy. But they sat down beside each other.

Until Sky’s phone on the dining table began to ring. He had left it there.

He stood up to go pick it up. It was Henry calling. But what surprised him was the influx of messages he saw on his phone.

The entire news was quite slow for Sky to process.

An helicopter had landed once again in their school? And what did he mean by someone saw Chris get on it?

He ended the call. And only thing else he saw was Chris’ message.

He was going home.

What the hell was happening?

His confused eyes turned to Mei as he began to call Chris.

Repeatedly.

But none of the calls ever connected.
