It's Your Turn To Cry and Beg, Dear Uncle
Chapter 43: Turns Out She Was High

Chapter 43: Turns Out She Was High

Kyra stared blankly into nothingness. Her mind was a complete mess at James’ words. Even after twenty minutes had passed, the young woman had yet to regain herself. She really couldn’t recall any promises made with James.

Last night? She thought to herself. Didn’t I fall asleep the whole night after the meds? Grandpa and grandma said so. I couldn’t even wake up when they came in.

Her mind wasn’t able to wrap around this mess. She was seriously doubting James rather than herself. However, the man had insisted that she had indeed agreed to date him. Although she couldn’t confirm it, she believed in her own judgment. How could she be so agreeable and joyfully accept him with neither consequences nor condition?

Despite her painfully existing feelings that refused to disappear, the man had done much worse for her to easily give him a free pass. They had indeed talked the other night but it did not end on a pleasant note.

When he asked if they would continue clashing with each other, she admitted that she had given him a choice. But, the man didn’t seem inclined to take it.

He just left.

In the end, Kyra never knew that James had actually considered her words and that very choice was the one thing that shook up his determination. She only knew that he left.

Hence, it was hard for her to believe that James harbored even the slightest affection for her, let alone claim they were dating. And even if James had compromised instead of leaving that night, they wouldn’t instantly get all chummy, would they?

There was no way she could trust him that easily. Just like the feelings she had for him, the heartbreaks would not easily disappear as well. Yet, according to him, she had let him approach her intimately last night. That was why he dared ventured so blatantly this morning.

While Kyra ruminated on her relationship with James, Valeria stole some curious glances at Kyra every now and then until eventually, she couldn’t hold her tongue any longer.

She immediately leaned over, holding onto the bed railings, and cast a gossipy look at Kyra. "Do you really not remember anything? I mean...are you one hundred percent sure or is this some sort of prank to get back at your uncle...sorry...I mean James?"

She instantly corrected herself as it would be utterly inappropriate to address the man as so by the look of this situation. Valeria couldn’t imagine discussing this thing while calling the man uncle throughout the whole conversation. Should anyone pass the room and hear their conversation, it would spell trouble.

Kyra frowned and looked at her best friend as if she were the stupidest person in the whole world. "And why would I need to do such a useless thing?"

Valeria was rendered speechless. "Then, do you think James is lying?"

The frown on her face deepened, her heart immediately denied her friend’s question. There was no gain in doing so and most importantly, James wasn’t such a free person. Why would he need to lie? He didn’t even hesitate to ruin her, so why would he choose such a runabout way to confuse her? The whole thing was just absurd.

"Well, if you don’t think he’s lying then it’s probably true. It’s as simple as that and..." Valeria flashed an awkward smile as she clapped, "Congratulations, I guess?"

Kyra pressed her lips as she shifted her gaze away. On the contrary to Valeria’s expectation her friend wasn’t happy.

"If he’s telling the truth, why did I agree in the first place?"

Valeria let out a long exasperated sigh. Well, she sort of understood why Kyra was being so stubborn with herself and why she was in denial about the whole thing instead of being happy. The guy had been nothing but a jerk these days and showed not a hint of remorse, then all of the sudden he professed his love. Who in the world would believe this shit?

"Did he somehow manipulate you?" Valeria threw another possibility.

Kyra stared at her friend once again. Her expression was one of complete disbelief and helplessness. "And might I ask, how would he do that when I literally passed out from a fever the whole night?"

"You..." Valeria paused as her head tried to process her words. "You passed out?"

"Yep." Kyra nodded in confidence. "I wasn’t even aware when Creighton and Jane visited me in the afternoon. I also couldn’t recall meeting James last night, pretty sure I knocked out hard after taking the meds. Oliver was there when I took it."

"That’s it!!" Valeria instantly got to her feet and screamed excitedly. Kyra was taken aback.

"It might be the drug. That’s why you don’t remember."

"That’s literally what I just said. It knocked me out," Kyra repeated her words in confusion as she stared at her friend who was supposedly enlightened by her words.

"Or you could be awake during the night but delirious," Valeria posed yet another assumption. But, this time she sounded more confident and a little bit excited.

"You said you suffered from a terrible fever so we can assume the doctor prescribed a rather strong medicine for you. It might explain why you were high and couldn’t remember the next day."

Kyra was speechless as this was the most possible situation out of the other assumptions they made. The gear in her head started to turn and she couldn’t help but become more and more convinced that it had indeed happened that way. James had nothing to gain from lying anyway.

"So, I talked to him while I was high," Kyra drew her own conclusion.

"I believe that’s the case."

Now that her friend repeated it, Valeria found the whole misunderstanding rather hilarious. She even felt sympathy towards James. The man literally got his permission from the drunk Kyra the night before yet got dumped straightaway the next morning by the sobered Kyra.

Valeria wondered how James would react when he finally arrived at this conclusion. In any case, serve him right!

"Well, regardless of how it happened, aren’t you happy to know that James has returned your feelings?"

Kyra let out a mocking sigh. "Do you honestly believe that? At this point, I don’t know whether I can trust his feelings."

Valeria nodded. "And I guess that’s the number one reason why you were in denial when he said you agreed to date."

Kyra gave her a weak nod. Her eyes returned to their previous absentminded state. Now she was even more confused on how to face James. Should she be happy with how things turned out?

Valeria who kept her eyes on Kyra the whole time noticed the shift in her mood and couldn’t help but sigh as well. Why oh why did you have to fuck in the first place if you’re going to date her anyway, James? Valeria cursed internally. That man truly deserved to be smacked.

Valeria rubbed her face in frustration. But when she looked up at her dazed friend, she understood that it wasn’t that Kyra hated the idea of dating the man. It was an issue of trust and pride. These two clouded Kyra’s feelings.

As they said, the one who fell first would inevitably lose from the get go, and Kyra obviously didn’t like such a feeling. Valeria couldn’t blame her either. In the end, James had to put in more effort to earn that trust and made sure that Kyra knew how much she was loved.

Meanwhile, as her best friend, Valeria just wanted her friend to be happy regardless whether it was the right thing to do.

"Does it have to be so complicated?"

Kyra whipped her head back to her friend. Valeria smiled. "If your head can’t decide, there’s nothing wrong with following your heart. Most of the time it’s right anyway."

Kyra knitted her brows. "Even if the heart isn’t capable of discerning good and bad decisions?"

"Honestly," Valeria chuckled. "Whether it’s good or not depends on perspective, and I don’t see anything bad from dating the man you love."

At the word ’love’, Kyra looked away again as though she was indirectly denying it. "It’s easy for you to say since you’re not the one who’s hurt."

"You’re right." Valeria wasn’t offended. In fact, she agreed with Kyra, she could easily make such a decision because she was merely an audience to her pain.

But, as Valeria sat down on the bed and laid beside her friend, she said, "Unfortunately, life is a shit ton of bad decisions so what are you gonna do about it? Are you going to keep turning away at every crossroad?"

At that question, Kyra remained quiet but she didn’t see her friend’s eyes either.

"No one is free from pain as long as we’re alive," Valeria continued. "Because that’s the only way we learn from our mistakes."

Kyra blinked and finally turned to Valeria who let out a helpless chuckle. "Humans are unsurprisingly stubborn beings. Sometimes it takes a painful heartbreak to knock some sense into them, don’t you agree?"

Kyra pursed her lips. "Yeah..." she paused as she lowered her gaze. "I guess..."

Valeria reached out and held Kyra’s hand as a form of encouragement. "Your fear and doubt are valid too, but I hope they won’t prevent you from choosing to be happy. What I want to say is..."

She smiled. "It’s okay if you still love him. That doesn’t mean you’re stupid."

Kyra raised her head and looked straight into Valeria’s eyes. The corner of her lips slowly lifted into a smile. This was precisely why Valeria was Kyra’s best friend. She always knew what to say. She understood what was left unspoken while Kyra often buried her true feelings.

"Thank you," Kyra thanked her sincerely.

"You’re welcome."

The both of them laid on the hospital bed, their eyes on the ceilings, while the sunlight illuminated the space. It was in this silence that Valeria suddenly spoke once more.

"By the way..."

"What?" Kyra turned her head again.

Then, as if Valeria was going to commit a crime, the woman checked on the door window before she leaned in to whisper, "Is he big?"

Kyra, "..."

A pillow slammed onto Valeria’s face in the next second.
