Chapter 336: Chapter 336: Chance Meeting at Night
For Yusuf Zuck, tales of extraordinary folk were just stories to indulge his curiosity about the unknown; he didn’t possess the same worshipful reverence as Everest Zuck did. After arriving in Guiyang, the pair caught a taxi and wound their way to the Miao Autonomous County of Xijiang Miao Village.
The Xijiang Miao Village was famous, serving not just as a local tourist attraction but also as a hub for the Miao community. Being there, one could truly experience the atmosphere of stepping into an ethnic minority enclave.
The Miao girls were beautiful, and their singing was enchanting.
Yusuf and Everest made a brief stop in the Miao village, had a meal, stocked up on provisions, and then continued their journey deeper into the mountains following the trails from Xijiang Miao Village.
They could not find the Miao poison woman in Xijiang Miao Village.
The Xijiang Miao Village was the type that integrated with society, whereas deep in the mountains lay more remote villages, far away from society. It was in one such secluded mountain village where Everest had encountered the Miao poison woman years before.
When they entered the mountains, there was initially a road connecting the villages; in previous years, the national policy of connecting every village had led to the construction of roads even in remote rural areas. Miao villages, as ethnic minority regions, received even more attention in this regard, so there were indeed concrete roads.
But as they ventured deeper, even the concrete roads disappeared, not to mention dirt tracks.
"Big brother, could we have taken a wrong turn? Where does this narrow, winding path lead?" Yusuf and Everest were walking in the mountains, where no homes were in sight, just a serpentine path stretching ahead.
"Just follow me. What, you think I’d sell you out? What are you scared of?" Everest chided.
"Being sold would be even better. If any Miao girl’s family wants a son-in-law, I’ll marry right in!" Yusuf joked.
"Let’s get moving. It’s going to be dark soon. We still have two mountains to climb over, and it looks like we’re going to camp in the mountains tonight. Good thing I brought a tent!" Everest had thought ahead. Yusuf’s backpack had a small tent rolled up inside it. It was already winter, and the chill in the forest grew intense at night. Without the tent, they might have frozen.
Nightfall came quickly, as if darkness descended while they walked and talked; and once it was dark, the mountains became pitch black. They could see nothing, and the sound of animals like owls, especially a certain bird whose cry resembled the wailing of a dead child, made Yusuf’s hair stand on end.
After walking on by the light of their powerful torches for a while, Everest suggested they set up camp. They couldn’t go any further—the dampness was intense, and there were wolves in the mountains. It was uncertain what might leap out and attack them at night.
As Yusuf quickly set up the tent, Everest sprinkled some white powder around it, claiming it was to keep bugs and snakes away.
"Also, I’ll keep watch for the first half of the night, and you take the second half. No sleeping while on watch. In the mountains, wolves aren’t the scary part; it’s people... and ghosts, like those so-called wandering spirits, they lurk in these mountains. Be careful!"
"Bro, can you not scare me?" Yusuf grimaced, Everest was just fearmongering and it was creepy to listen to.
"Haha, relax. You’re so capable, what’s there to be afraid of? You go sleep first, I’ll listen to the radio." The rascal actually took out a pocket radio, found a station, and started listening to a story-telling program.
Yusuf crawled into the tent. Perhaps a little excited, it was, after all, his first time camping in the mountains, so he couldn’t fall asleep right away.
Just as he lay there in the tent, lost in thought for less than an hour, Everest suddenly kicked him!
"What the hell? What are you doing?" Yusuf sat up immediately and exclaimed.
"You’re not asleep? It’s your turn; it’s midnight. I’m sleepy..." Everest crawled into his sleeping bag. He really did bring all the right gear.
Yusuf couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time. Everest was too cunning. By the time they had the tent set up and chatted for a bit, it was nearly midnight, so he’d barely lain down for an hour before it was time for his shift.
Everest could sleep soundly the rest of the night, but Yusuf had to stay up to keep watch.
Yusuf gestured at Everest disapprovingly. If Everest wasn’t an older man, and if they were the same age, Yusuf would’ve given him a good kicking. The man was just too cunning and deserved it.
Since he couldn’t sleep anyway, Yusuf crawled out of the tent.
It was cold outside but not too severe; his body was strong and resistant to the cold.
After making a round outside the tent, he cut some dry wood and grass with his Short Sword, lit a fire to keep warm and then fiddled with his phone, sending text messages to Mia and Miles O’brien.
He had to admit that the mobile signal was pretty good; there was coverage even in the mountains, so he sent the texts without any problem.
While Yusuf Zuck, Mia, and Miles O’Brien were chatting through text messages, he didn’t realize that the fire he made had gradually died out, and at the same time, the night wind came blowing, making the mountain forest rustle loudly.
Perhaps it was the wind, but he faintly heard someone talking.
Yes, it was the sound of people talking, as if at a great distance away, some people were walking and conversing.
Yusuf Zuck shivered and quickly stood up; his telekinesis instantly expanded, releasing a radius of forty-five meters!
No one, there was no one within forty-five meters, and when he listened closely to the voice again, it also seemed to have disappeared.
"Big bro, big bro, wake up, wake up, I think I heard voices!" Yusuf Zuck nervously flipped open the tent cover and said.
"Bullshit, there’s not even a ghost, where would the people come from, don’t disturb me..." Everest Zuck, half-asleep, turned over, cursed, and then went back to sleep.
Yusuf Zuck knew he was older and had walked all day until he was very tired, so he couldn’t bear to bother him anymore and instead, he listened carefully.
"Hm? There’s still talking." After listening for a while, Yusuf Zuck still heard faint voices talking, very far away, but he could still hear them.
"Damn it, I want to see whether it’s a human or a ghost!" Yusuf Zuck, courageous and possessing the Supreme Weapon, cursed and tightened his grip on the sword, then followed in the direction of the sound.
The direction of the sound was off the beaten path; Yusuf Zuck pushed his way through the underbrush, moving forward continually, and then the voices seemed to become clearer.
Also, the direction he was heading was towards the high mountain to the left, as if the voices were coming from a distant mountaintop.
The closer Yusuf Zuck got, the farther he walked, but the voices became clearer, and he even heard someone laughing loudly.
The people on that side were speaking loudly, yet by the time their voices reached him, they had become quite soft.
After walking for more than half an hour, he saw the cliff on the mountaintop in his sight, and at the same time, he also spotted two black figures.
Due to the distance and the darkness of the night, he couldn’t reach them with his telekinesis, so he could only faintly discern the two figures.
"You first."
"You first." The voices of the two talking were clearly audible.
"Alright then, the old man shall not shirk the responsibility." One of the figures laughed and jumped into the void off the cliff!
"Holy shit!" Yusuf Zuck was taken aback; that was a precipice, but those two people were actually yielding to each other to jump off?
However, a miraculous scene unfolded; the person who jumped first did not fall but hovered in mid-air and then, like a black rat, ran towards the other side of the cliff.
"Haha, Brother Feng’s skills have improved; younger brother, here I come!" That person laughed and then jumped down as well, hovering in mid-air, stepping on nothing as if running!
Yusuf Zuck thought he had seen immortals, so he was both excited and scared.
Only when the two figures completely disappeared and their voices faded did he carefully emerge and run towards the mountaintop.
In about two minutes or so, covering a distance of about two hundred meters, he arrived at the base of the mountaintop, and when he looked up, he saw a rock about ten meters high in a vertical angle, bare, without any protrusions to climb.
Only by climbing this rock could he reach the mountain summit, and this rock would probably be insurmountable even for professional climbers, as there were no crevices to hold onto or places to set foot on.
Of course, this was no difficulty for Yusuf Zuck; having thought it through, he drew the Short Sword and plunged it into the rock, then climbed up like a monkey.
Upon reaching the mountaintop, he couldn’t help but curse softly.
What immortals? There was a chain on the cliff of the mountaintop, and the chain connected to the other side of the cliff; that’s why those two figures had been running across it.
"Even so, those two are not simple at all. And where did they go? There’s nothing on the other side, right?" Yusuf Zuck looked towards the opposite cliff, which was bare, without anything!
