Chapter 314: Chapter 314: Lucy Clayton Plays Mind Games
"Ruth, they only allocated you this Buick Regal, which is clearly unfair. Is this Herman Holloway’s idea, or someone else’s?" Yusuf Zuck knew that Ruth Wilcox couldn’t possibly be unaware of what car was assigned to her, so he couldn’t help but ask while driving.
"Mr. Holloway is the general manager of the hotel; he’s in charge of everything, so of course it’s his idea. Of course..." Ruth’s tone shifted mid-sentence, "Since he’s responsible for the overall operations, he also needs to consider the feelings of others. I was fast-tracked into the company, and the other two vice presidents, even some of the middle management, would feel disgruntled, so Herman’s arrangement serves as a pacifier for the vice presidents and a warning to me."
"Herman Holloway is really a master at playing the game," Yusuf Zuck commented with a curl of his lip.
"Every person in power has their unique way of operation, so I’m not going to complain about that. A car is just a means of transportation. I was appointed by headquarters to focus on business. As long as the performance improves in the new year, I’ll score points at headquarters and at the shareholders’ meeting, so I’ll just do my job well and do it even better!"
"Then do you have any chance of ousting Herman Holloway, taking over his position?" Yusuf Zuck abruptly asked.
"There’s no chance for the time being," Ruth shook her head and replied, "I heard that Herman Holloway has connections with the chairman, who owns fifty-one percent of the shares. So the chairman represents absolute voting power or veto power at the shareholders’ meeting."
"Who is the chairman of New Century? Do you know?" Yusuf Zuck asked in surprise.
"I heard it’s the Hong Kong Petty Family."
...
Yusuf Zuck was speechless for a while. Ruth was out of the loop—now, Yusuf Zuck was the chairman of New Century.
"Ring, ring, ring~" As Yusuf Zuck was driving and chatting with Ruth, his phone suddenly rang. When Yusuf Zuck pulled out his phone to check the caller ID, he was surprised to see it was a call from Louise Garrett.
Yusuf Zuck glanced at Ruth through the rearview mirror; she sat quietly in the back, looking out the window, not being nosy about who was calling Yusuf Zuck.
After a moment’s thought, he answered the call directly.
"Yusuf Zuck, where are you?" As soon as the call connected, Louise Garrett wasted no time in asking.
"I’m at..." Yusuf Zuck opened his mouth, then took a deep breath before he answered, "Ms. Wilcox, whom I worked with in Fengdu, has returned to the capital, and I’m with her now. Ah, I’m back to my old job, a driver and part-time bodyguard."
Yusuf Zuck didn’t hide anything, because such things couldn’t be kept secret, so it was better to be straightforward.
Louise Garrett fell silent for a moment on the other end of the line. She knew Yusuf Zuck had an ambiguous relationship with that female executive from before and thought Yusuf had already cut ties with her. She hadn’t expected that not only had they not severed ties, but when the executive returned, Yusuf Zuck, this billionaire, actually became her driver once more.
Of course, when Louise first met Yusuf, he was that female executive’s driver, so she still considered herself the newcomer.
"The thing is, Lucy Clayton previously visited the hospital, went to Er Shui’s room, offered an apology, and left a check for one billion, claiming it was for us to pass on to you. At that time, we didn’t accept it, and we sent it back to him. Just now, he came by again, this time with two billion."
"After dropping off the money, he left. He’s also injured and stays on the same floor as us. Now, Samuel Ross asked me to check with you—do we keep this money or not!"
"Two billion..." Yusuf Zuck took a deep breath, also admiring Lucy Clayton for his ability to be so personable, showing up at the hospital with injuries to apologize, showing such humility.
"Keep it—if they offer, then keep it," Yusuf Zuck said after some thought.
"How should it be distributed?" Louise Garrett threw a challenging question. The current situation was that Lucy Clayton had offered two billion in compensation, but he hadn’t specified who it was for or how much each person should get.
You should know that among Samuel Ross and his people, some were injured and some were not, so how should this money be split?
"Damn it, Lucy Clayton is up to no good, motherfucker. Even now, she’s still playing tricks?" Yusuf Zuck cursed. That sly Lucy Clayton, didn’t she realize that the money would be hard to allocate? With disagreements over who gets more or less, it could lead to internal conflicts and drive a wedge between the brothers’ camaraderie.
Lucy Clayton couldn’t possibly have done this unwittingly, nor could she have failed to foresee this."
"Keep the check with you, I’ll make time to swing by this afternoon." Yusuf Zuck still needed to have a good talk with Lucy Clayton. Was this wretch really seeking death or what?
After hanging up with Miles O’Brien, Ruth Wilcox was still staring out the window, entirely unconcerned with whom Yusuf Zuck was talking to or about his various social obligations and business dealings outside. All she wanted was for Yusuf Zuck to simply be her driver, nothing more, nothing less.
Yusuf Zuck glanced at her in the rearview mirror, smiled, and said nothing, continuing to drive.
The phone rang again almost immediately after his call with Miles O’Brien ended. The number ended with six eights.
Six eights, wasn’t that Lucy Clayton’s number?
"Brother Dao, you play your cards well, very high indeed." As soon as Yusuf Zuck answered the call, he started being sarcastic, and Lucy Clayton seemed stunned on the other end of the line. But soon after, he replied with a bitter smile, "Mr. Zuck, are you referring to the check?"
"What do you think?" Yusuf Zuck retorted.
"It was intended for you, but you didn’t want it, so I could only give it to them. Moreover, for them, this two hundred million might be a huge amount, so I feared it might lead to trouble. That’s why I’m calling to explain!"
"No need to explain. All I think is: you want to turn my brothers against each other!" Yusuf Zuck sneered.
"It might sow discord and create disharmony, but on the other hand, isn’t it the perfect opportunity to see someone’s true nature? You’re a smart man, Brother Zhang. I think you’ll understand," said Lucy Clayton.
"I don’t need you to teach me how to be scheming. What you did today makes me want to kill you all over again!" Yusuf Zuck was enraged. Lucy Clayton was certainly a slippery customer, an old hand at manipulation and scheming, well-versed in the ways of managing subordinates.
This guy had his own ways!
However, Lucy Clayton was not frightened or scared by Yusuf Zuck’s anger; instead, she replied indifferently, "I think, Brother Zhang, you have not set up any... any corporate rules, which is why you’re in a tough spot."
"What corporate rules?" Yusuf Zuck asked subconsciously.
"In my company, if there’s a collective action and something happens, there’s a fixed reward based on the extent of the injuries and another type of reward for death. Everything is regulated by rules, so they don’t argue over the amount they get because I have regulations and everything must be done according to the company’s procedures!"
"Brother Zhang, no offense, but you’ve gathered so many people without establishing any rules. There will be chaos sooner or later, and there are more headaches for you ahead. So this time, consider it a test. I know I’ve overstepped, but I want to say I’m looking to join you, to work with you. Do you believe me?"
"Are you joking?" Yusuf Zuck said, halfway between laughter and tears.
Lucy Clayton fell silent for a moment, then said, "There are some people who, despite seemingly not existing, still control everything in the world, and you, you are one of those people. You’ve shown me the miracles someone can perform in this world. Only now do I finally understand how you’ve achieved so much in just over two months. So, I think, if I work with you, my future might be brighter."
"Of course, I know this is just wishful thinking on my part, but I’m sincere. I have dreams and greater grudges to pay back. Perhaps I can’t achieve my greater vengeance on my own, but with you, I will succeed!"
"I think you just want to take revenge on me!" Yusuf Zuck ’snap’ hung up the phone.
