Chapter 311: Chapter 311: Little Little Driver

In the driver’s lounge on the first floor of New Century, Yusuf Zuck sat on the sofa, savoring the kiss they had just shared upstairs. The feeling Ruth Wilcox gave him was particularly different. The instant he embraced her, he could also feel the surging in her heart.

Of course, he could feel her happiness as well.

She was truly happy. At this moment, she was like a free bird soaring through the sky, where the vast heavens allowed birds to fly and the oceans let fish leap.

She had given up everything to return, and even though she had lost a lot, she had also gained much. At the very least, she had found joy and sweetness.

There were nine people in total in the New Century’s driver’s team. Among these nine, one was the dedicated driver for the General Manager Herman Holloway, and two were the dedicated drivers for other vice-managers.

There wasn’t only one vice-manager like Ruth Wilcox at New World. Of course, Ruth Wilcox’s current ranking was second, only behind the one like Herman Holloway. After all, not only was she internationally experienced, but she also had a past as the General Manager of Ferreni Grand Hotel, so it was normal for her to rank second.

Besides the three dedicated drivers for the executives, there was also one bus driver. The rest were hotel concierge drivers responsible for transporting guests.

"Yusuf Zuck, this is the key for the car assigned to Ms. Wilcox, and your work badge. Keep them safe. The fuel tank is full now. Company policy requires that every Monday morning, all vehicles must be checked in for inspection. Then fuel vouchers will be allocated based on your fuel gauge reading. Also, under normal circumstances, you must clock in every day. Absence from work is not allowed unless you are on official business or the executives are out of town; otherwise, absenteeism is unacceptable. The company has a rule: anyone who is absent without leave for three or more days will have two-thirds of their monthly wages deducted," explained the person speaking, named Tanner King, the head of the driver team and Herman Holloway’s dedicated driver.

Being a driver at a five-star hotel is actually quite lucrative. The phrase "quite lucrative" originated from drivers working for the government, who manipulated vehicle fuel usage to siphon off government money.

Some of these drivers could earn several times more from fuel money alone compared to their actual salary in a month.

And then there are those who could fabricate problems with a perfectly fine vehicle; after a repair that truly cost only a little, they could claim it cost a hundred.

Finance personnel don’t know much about actual repair costs, so as long as the supervisors approve the request, finance will pay the money.

That’s why many people within government institutions clamor to become drivers, to the extent that some leaders don’t even need drivers as they prefer to drive themselves. By doing so, they can embezzle more money.

"Oh, it’s a Buick, huh." Yusuf Zuck was not really listening to Tanner King’s rambling. He wasn’t there to make money, so whether he stayed for three months or less did not matter to him. In fact, he might leave even before three months were up, since with the approach of Chinese New Year and the beginning of the jade stone gambling, not to mention that it would be March 1st in just two more months, he truly had a lot on his hands.

Therefore, terms like losing two-thirds of your salary for being absent for three days did not affect him; he never intended to earn money from this job in the first place.

"It’s a new Regal," Tanner King nodded and said.

"Oh, okay, I’ll go check out the car." Yusuf Zuck smiled at Tanner King, then took the keys and work badge and left. The work badge was to be worn around the neck as a symbol of hotel staff.

However, when he reached the garage and saw all the cars parked inside, he frowned, because the least impressive car in the garage was that Buick Regal, which was eight or nine parts new.

There were BMWs, Audis, and even a mid-size passenger van.

"Dammit, this feels a bit like being bullied," Yusuf Zuck cursed. Whether in the official system or the workplace, politics and power plays are inevitable, for wherever there are people, there are battles of wits.

Ruth Wilcox was new and had also been assigned the position of the first vice-manager. Thus, the other two vice-managers were definitely not pleased. That’s why they couldn’t confront Ruth Wilcox openly, but it was quite normal for them to trip her up and make things difficult for her behind the scenes.

"If I accept being bullied now and have to put up with it, then they’ll certainly take greater liberties later, thinking you, Ruth Wilcox, are someone they can walk all over!" Yusuf Zuck scratched his chin. He had initially wanted to test drive the car, but now he lost all interest in it.

He pulled out his phone and turned to walk towards the hotel lobby.

At that moment, Tanner King happened to come to the garage to pick up his car and they walked right into each other.

"Hey, big bro Tanner, is there a mistake? The Regal isn’t new, is it? And is Ms. Wilcox’s car allowance lower than the other executives?" Yusuf Zuck directly asked.

Tanner King frowned and retorted, "Is that something you should be asking?"

Yusuf Zuck was momentarily taken aback, indeed this wasn’t something a mere driver like him should question.

"Mind your status, hmmph," Tanner King huffed and strode away.

Yusuf Zuck couldn’t help but laugh and cry at his situation, things just seemed to be getting worse for him.

However, he didn’t take Tanner King’s reprimand to heart. He’d always had a good attitude and wasn’t someone who picked fights easily, but if he did, it was the kind that went for the kill. So, a small fry like Tanner King wasn’t worth the hassle, simply too boring for him.

He returned to the hotel lobby and then sat down on the couch to call Marlon Shepherd.

Once the call connected, Marlon Shepherd laughed over the phone, "Does the big boss know I’ve just landed? So you’re coming to pick me up?"

"I don’t have time to pick you up, have your wife do it. I’ve got another assignment for you, help me assess the value of the additional forty-nine percent of shares in New Century. I’m planning a full acquisition, and you’d better hurry up with your investigation, so I can negotiate with the Petty Family. If the funds are insufficient, I still need to go make some money," Yusuf Zuck instructed.

"Your funds are sufficient, I’ll send you the valuation report tonight," Marlon Shepherd replied.

"Good, I really can’t come to pick you up now, I’m tied up," Yusuf Zuck reminded Marlon Shepherd.

"I know, Xueqing is already at the airport, she’s the one picking me up!"

"Oh oh, then hurry back and contribute your public grain, goodbye." Without giving Marlon Shepherd a chance to respond, Yusuf Zuck burst into laughter and hung up the phone.

"Which department are you from, who allowed you to sit here?" Yusuf Zuck’s laughter drew the attention of the lobby manager, and when the manager saw Yusuf Zuck wearing an employee badge, he was so angry he nearly slapped Yusuf Zuck twice.

An employee of the company, sitting in the lobby and laughing loudly without any restraint? Wasn’t he afraid of scaring the guests? Therefore, the complexion of the lobby manager wasn’t good at all.

"You scared the hell out of me!" Yusuf Zuck really was startled, as the lobby manager came over and started berating him. He was still laughing before, but this scolding scared him stiff.

At the same time, he started to get angry, thinking today just wasn’t his lucky day – reprimanded by a chauffeur from his class, and now a manager was on his case too. He wondered if he should have checked the almanac before stepping out because his fortune seemed to be going downhill.

"What did you say? Which department are you from? How can you talk like that, what kind of manners do you have? Security, security, come over..."

"Okay, okay, I’m sorry, manager, it’s my first day here, I’m Ms. Wilcox’s new driver. I didn’t know we couldn’t sit here. But, you really did startle me, I’m leaving, I’m leaving, okay?" Not wanting to make a scene in order to save Ruth Wilcox from embarrassment, Yusuf Zuck immediately apologized, nodding and bowing, and then scampered off towards the drivers’ lounge.
