Chapter 297: Chapter 297: Flames Spurt Out

In fact, Yusuf Zuck hadn’t expected to be released so quickly, and he was still confused until the moment he was released; he had absolutely no idea what was happening.

"Based on our understanding, those two thugs already had a history of harassing women. Today, they have frightened Mr. Zuck, and we will provide an explanation to Mr. Zuck as soon as possible," the criminal police captain knew well that Yusuf had influential connections. Not only had the city bureau’s senior leadership spoken up, but National Security had also weighed in, and Director Long had expressed concern as well. Therefore, under the pressure from these three areas, even if Lucy Clayton had pulled strings, it would have been to no avail.

Yusuf had to be released.

This was the order from Chief Zhao of East City. Moreover, the case wasn’t significant; it wasn’t a murder or a vendetta killing. It was just a fight over jealousy for a woman, in which Yusuf had struck too hard and injured the other party.

Normally, for such a case, the procedure would start with civil matters before moving on to criminal charges, meaning that they would first facilitate a negotiation between the two parties. If Yusuf compensated the victim and they reached an understanding, then there would be no issue, perhaps just a few days of detention at most, not even half a month.

Thus, whether it was Chief Zhao or the captain of the criminal police, they wouldn’t possibly offend influential figures over such a trivial matter.

Of course, if the case had been too big and widely known, they wouldn’t release the person involved, but since the case was so minor, giving face to all three parties was also in their best interest.

Moreover, since the other party had used a knife, just on this point alone, Yusuf was not in the wrong, perhaps only guilty of unintentional injury. If he hadn’t defended himself, the other party would have stabbed him, so the fault lay with them, not with Yusuf.

When Yusuf was released, he didn’t say anything, but he had to express gratitude. Regardless of the reason, they released him in the middle of the night, at three in the morning, so he at least needed to be polite on the surface.

In his mind, he would never oppose the authorities. What did the character for official represent? A character with two mouths — it didn’t matter if you were an ordinary person or a wealthy tycoon, if they wanted to deal with you, they had plenty of ways to do so.

So even if there were mistakes in the handling of the case, or someone secretly manipulated connections to target him, he would have to endure it for the time being and not reveal anything on the surface.

In the end, he was just an ordinary citizen with a little bit of money and some minor abilities; he wouldn’t overstep, nor would he act against those who had released him.

The captain of the criminal police was a decent person; he took the trouble to drive Yusuf to the Unity Health Clinic, the scene of the incident. His car was still parked there.

"Thanks, Captain Samuel, I’ll treat you to a meal another day," Yusuf said politely as he shook hands with the captain while getting out of the car. Captain Samuel then apologized again, "Head home quickly, Mr. Zuck. Rest assured, those two kids are currently under house arrest at the hospital. Once their injuries are slightly better, we’ll proceed formally. We’ll need Mr. Zuck’s cooperation then!"

"Sure, at your call," said Yusuf cheerfully.

"Until next time."

"Until next time," Yusuf waved goodbye to Captain Samuel, got into his pickup, and pulled out his cell phone to power it on.

Both of his phones had been turned off at the police station. Now that he had been released, his phone and a bunch of personal items had naturally been returned to him.

After the phone powered on, he waited a moment, but there were no text message alerts, which meant no one had tried to message him while it was off.

As for whether anyone had called, he wasn’t sure.

After thinking it over, he called Paisley Kirk first. She had entered the police station with him, and the incident had terrified the young girl, so naturally, Yusuf would want to inform her first upon his release to reassure her.

However, when he dialed her number, there was only a dead tone on the other end, sounding as if the phone was out of battery or lacked a signal.

Yusuf frowned slightly, wondering if the young girl had turned off her phone. But at this hour, shouldn’t she have charged it upon returning home and turned it on while charging?

Yusuf got out of his car and banged on the health clinic’s door vigorously for a while; he wanted to check if the young girl was there. If not, he would go to her home to see.

There was no response from inside the clinic, so Yusuf immediately got back into his car and drove toward the residential area where she lived.

At the same time, he dialed Fleur Carson’s number. The young girl lived with Fleur, and Yusuf didn’t know if there was a landline phone at her place, so he was checking with Fleur.

Yet, Fleur’s phone was unexpectedly turned off.

Yusuf Zuck cursed under his breath, then continued driving.

About ten minutes later, Yusuf’s phone suddenly rang, and to his surprise, the caller ID showed it was Anna Cooke.

Yusuf was taken aback for a moment but then quickly realized that his swift release was probably thanks to Anna’s help.

As soon as the call connected, it seemed like Anna let out a long sigh of relief. "Mom said you were released overnight. Yep, now that I’ve got through to you, I feel relieved. I’m traveling this afternoon, not in the capital city. Otherwise, I’d fly over to comfort you. As long as you’re okay, that’s good. I’m hanging up now, really sleepy. Oh, right, call Louise Garrett. She was terrified. Yep, hanging up now."

Without giving Yusuf a chance to speak, she went on for a while, then hung up straight away.

Shaking his head, Yusuf then dialed Miles O’Brien’s number.

The phone was picked up after just one ring, indicating that Miles had been holding it.

"Yusuf?" Miles’s voice came through the line, loud and clear.

"Louise, I’m fine now. You’re at home, right? Wait for me at the shop at eight in the morning, and we’ll talk then," Yusuf said with a faint smile.

"Boo hoo hoo..." Upon hearing Yusuf’s voice, Miles burst into tears.

"Don’t cry, I’m okay. If I weren’t, I wouldn’t be able to call you, right?" Yusuf tried to comfort her.

"Yusuf, I’m at the hospital..." Miles choked up. "Floyd just had surgery and is in the ICU, and Five-Cents just woke up a little while ago."

"What? What?" Hearing Miles’s words, Yusuf pressed hard on the brakes!

"What happened?" Yusuf asked loudly.

"Tonight, shortly after your incident, Samuel and the others were attacked by a gang with knives. Floyd got stabbed twice, Five-Cents thrice, and Samuel’s hand was also slashed. They are all in the hospital now. The police have filed a case; some thugs have been caught, not sure how they will be dealt with."

"Which hospital? I’m coming right away!" Yusuf’s body trembled slightly. Misfortune never comes singly; having had an accident himself, now his brothers had been dragged into trouble too!

This was a premeditated act, someone in the shadows was targeting him.

Yusuf felt an extreme sense of crisis because, as of yet, he didn’t know who was scheming against him from behind the scenes.

"Ditan Hospital," Miles answered.

"Alright, I’m on my way." Yusuf decided not to go to Paisley’s place but headed straight for Ditan Hospital.

Just as he hung up on Miles, he received a call from Everest Zuck.

The moment the call connected, Everest seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, "Glad you’re out, glad you’re out. My boss just called me, said you were released. Yeah, Yusuf, be careful. Someone is targeting you guys. Jerome almost got killed, and I heard your friends in the capital city got hurt or killed. You need to figure out who is after you soon, or else you might face even bigger trouble."

"Jerome nearly died too?" The flames in Yusuf’s heart erupted in an instant. Who the hell was targeting them?

"Yusuf, Yusuf..." Jerome snatched the phone from Everest, "I’m okay, don’t worry about me. I’m on the way back to the capital city with the master. Also, Anna’s phone isn’t going through. Something feels off. Think about it, we’ve all had trouble, and Anna is so close to us; could she be in trouble? The main thing is her phone isn’t going through, I’m worried. Hurry up and find her, make sure she’s safe, damn it, she’s my employee!"

Reminded by Jerome, Yusuf felt a shiver run through his entire body.

Indeed, if Samuel and the others were in trouble, and Jerome had issues in Ulaanbaatar, then what about the girl whose phone was unreachable?

Yusuf decided not to go to the hospital. Once more, he changed direction, speeding towards the residential area where the girl lived!
