Chapter 289: Chapter 289: The Return of Giving Up Everything
On the way back, Anna Cooke kept asking Yusuf Zuck who Wren Hicks was and how he could tell and so on and so forth. In short, she asked all the way, but Yusuf Zuck didn’t answer her in the end.
He couldn’t possibly tell Anna Cooke that there was a compartment in the bottle and that the words "Wren Hicks" were hidden inside, could he? So until he dropped Anna Cooke off at her home, he didn’t say a thing.
Anna Cooke was angry but also speechless. Before getting out of the car, she huffed and puffed, claiming they were no longer friends.
Yusuf Zuck just laughed, watching her enter a military compound before driving away.
However, Yusuf Zuck had left, but Anna Cooke stopped short and took out her phone to call Miles O’Brien.
"Sara, what’s up?" Miles O’Brien asked with a laugh.
"Teacher, let’s go to Hangzhou tomorrow, and ask Malachi Hicks if he knows who Wren Hicks is, whether there’s any relationship between Wren Hicks and Malachi Hicks. We’ll take the bottle with us."
"Tomorrow..." Miles O’Brien thought for a moment and said, "Tomorrow afternoon then. You book the tickets!" Collectors are all crazy and obsessed; they won’t rest until they uncover the truth.
"Not booking tickets. It’s not safe to ship the bottle. I’ll find a car for us to take."
"Alright, you arrange it then." Miles O’Brien knew about Anna Cooke’s family background, so he also knew about her capabilities.
After hanging up the phone, Anna Cooke snorted softly and said, "I must find Wren Hicks!"
Yusuf Zuck had intended to drive straight home or perhaps to Louise Garrett’s place, but as he drove, he happened to pass by the entrance to Ruth Wilcox’s home estate. So, he took a turn and entered the neighborhood.
Fortunately, the two security guards on duty at the estate still recognized him, and they registered his license plate.
It had been many days since he last came here, and Mia hadn’t returned either. Thus, when he once again walked into Ruth Wilcox’s villa, he found it exceptionally desolate. There was heating in the house, but it was so empty that it gave a feeling of loneliness.
The yard was covered with snow, adding to the desolate ambiance.
Yusuf Zuck entered the villa, took off his clothes, set down the roast goose, and went to the storage room to grab the snow-clearing tools before heading outside.
In the middle of the night, he began clearing snow, spending a full two hours to remove all the snow from the yard, cleaning it spotlessly.
Then he went back inside the villa. From the second floor to the first, he wiped the floors of every room and even dusted the nightstands.
He was quite sentimental, and seeing the place turned so desolate, he felt a sense of melancholy.
After midnight around 2 a.m., he heated the roast goose again, took out a bottle of red wine, and began to drink alone.
Perhaps it was a telepathic connection between him and Ruth Wilcox, who was across the ocean, that when he had downed three glasses of wine, his phone actually rang.
Because of the time difference, it should have been daytime for her across the ocean, while it was deep night here for him.
Yusuf Zuck quickly answered the phone, feeling an inexplicable rush of excitement. Could Ruth Wilcox really have some telepathic connection with him?
"Are you asleep?" Ruth Wilcox asked softly. "Am I disturbing your rest?"
"Haven’t slept. I’m at your house, drinking wine and eating roast goose," Yusuf Zuck chuckled.
"Ah... by yourself?" Ruth Wilcox said incredulously.
"Yeah." Yusuf Zuck told the truth, "I haven’t been back for many days. Today, I suddenly returned and saw the snow in the yard, dust in the house, so I spent a few hours cleaning it all up. Then I got hungry, sat down, and started drinking your red wine and eating the roast goose I bought myself."
After a moment of silence on the phone, Ruth Wilcox said softly, "I can sense your loneliness."
Yusuf Zuck thought for a bit and said, "It’s just that I miss you a little."
"Mm, I know, so the reason I called you today is to let you know that on January 1st, I’ll give you a surprise!"
"January 1st?" Yusuf Zuck was stunned for a moment. Today was December 28th, and in three days it would be New Year’s Day, which was January 1st, right?
"You... you’re coming back on New Year’s Day?" Yusuf Zuck asked excitedly.
"I won’t tell you. Just make sure your phone isn’t turned off on New Year’s Day. I told you it’s a surprise," Ruth Wilcox whispered.
"Alright, alright, it won’t be turned off. I’ll wait for your surprise, hahaha." Yusuf Zuck laughed heartily. What kind of surprise could Ruth Wilcox give him? Aside from her returning, he couldn’t think of any other surprise.
"Look at you, laughing so wickedly. I’ve made my preparations, Yusuf Zuck... Can you treat me the same as before?" Ruth Wilcox suddenly asked.
Yusuf Zuck said solemnly, "I am willing to serve my Ruth Wilcox for a lifetime!"
Ruth Wilcox said softly, "Someone once said that time could push distance further apart and time could also make us forget everything. But during this time, I forgot the whole world but never forgot you!"
Her voice was tender and soft as she spoke of her longing. Yusuf Zuck could feel it; she was like a moth, knowing the flame was ahead yet still determined to plunge into it.
"Distance may be vast, but our hearts have grown closer. I really can’t control how much I miss you. In Los Angeles, I was nearly going insane. Perhaps this is love; it truly makes me lose control."
Yusuf Zuck took a deep breath and said, "On New Year’s Day, I’ll do nothing but wait for your call!"
"Okay," Ruth Wilcox replied, and after thinking for a moment she said, "Don’t drink anymore. It hurts my heart to hear you drinking alone."
"Mm, I won’t drink anymore. It’s almost dawn; I’m going to practice boxing!"
"I love waking up every morning and seeing you practice boxing in the yard. I love your bright sunny smile every day. Wait for my surprise." After saying this, Ruth Wilcox hung up the phone, but Yusuf Zuck continued to listen to the dial tone for a long while without hanging up.
Ruth Wilcox must have broken free of all constraints and decided to come back.
"It’s good if she comes back." Yusuf Zuck didn’t plan to run away or worry about anything. Although he was wealthy now, he hadn’t changed, nor had his heart. And if Ruth Wilcox did come back, she would definitely be a strong support for him.
"Once she’s back and agrees, I’ll take a trip to Hong Kong to acquire all the shares of New Century, and then I’ll hand over New Century to her!" Yusuf Zuck immediately made the decision that bringing Ruth Wilcox into New Century was the best choice.
...
Meanwhile, far away in Los Angeles, after Ruth Wilcox put down the phone, she also dragged her suitcase out of her room.
Her grandfather sat in the living room with a grim face, surrounded by his brothers and aunts—senior members of the Wilcox Family.
When they saw her coming downstairs, the chatting members of the Wilcox Family immediately fell silent.
"Ruth, you can go back to the country, but according to the family’s rules, you have to sign this document," said one of Ruth Wilcox’s aunts, suddenly pointing to a document on the table. It was a Wilcox Family share relinquishment agreement. If Ruth signed this document, then all her shares in the Wilcox Family would be gone.
It was akin to leaving with nothing; without the Wilcox Family, she would have nothing.
Ruth Wilcox glanced at her grandfather. He could no longer influence the entire Wilcox Family. Now the head of the family was her second uncle, so her grandfather couldn’t help her. Of course, her grandfather was also furious this time because Ruth defied his wishes by returning to the country, equivalent to eloping.
In fact, he knew that Ruth Wilcox had fallen in love with a driver back in the country, and that was the real reason she wanted to return.
What was most important was that he had also reached an agreement with the Ross Family. The young Ross was fond of Ruth, and he had already promised the Ross Family.
Ruth’s actions were akin to betraying him, which angered her grandfather beyond measure!
After casting several glances at her silent grandfather, Ruth Wilcox walked to the table with her bulky suitcase, picked up the pen, and briskly signed her name on the document!
"Grandfather, take care. I will come back often to see you!" With those words, she turned and left, not looking at anyone else, nor did she cry, with no regrets or resentment, for she was a strong girl!
