Chapter 161: Inquiry

Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Inquiry

After Yusuf Zuck finished talking to Ember Vance on the phone, he didn’t immediately go to Haidian but instead left the hospital room and went to Jade Cooke’s room.

Before he had the altercation with Fleur Carson that night, he had left from Jade Cooke’s room, and in less than two hours, he had returned to the hospital.

Hence, he needed to secure his alibis in advance, which included Jade Cooke and her siblings, the young nurse Paisley Kirk, and his father Felix Zuck—all credible witnesses.

Naturally, he couldn’t say anything explicitly. He did not disclose to Jade Cooke that he had been summoned; he merely made a symbolic visit to Jade’s room and exchanged a few words.

After leaving, he went back to Felix Zuck’s room. Nurse Paisley Kirk had gone out to fetch some hot water, so he quietly informed his father about the police summons.

"Was it you who killed him?" Felix Zuck asked anxiously.

"No, how could I kill someone?" Yusuf shook his head.

"I remember you went out that night. It was almost eleven before you returned. Where did you go?" Felix Zuck was coarse but perceptive.

"I was here with you the whole time, I didn’t go anywhere," Yusuf blinked and said.

"Damn it," Felix muttered quietly.

"Go ahead, I got it. I’ll talk to Paisley later; don’t worry, there will be no issues. You’ve been with me the entire time," Felix, sharp as a tack, despite Yusuf’s nonadmission, had already guessed that Yusuf was likely the culprit.

He felt both relieved and worried in his heart.

"Alright, I’ll be leaving now," Yusuf nodded and then turned to walk downstairs.

Before long, Paisley Kirk returned to the room, and old Felix began to chat with her about nothing in particular, subtly steering the conversation towards the matter of Yusuf being summoned by the police.

Paisley Kirk was nervous, but old Felix told her if the police came asking, asking if his elder brother had left the room, just to say no.

Paisley nodded repeatedly. In her memory, Yusuf had been sleeping at the hospital that night. That was the truth. As for whether he went out partway through, she genuinely didn’t know.

But according to what old Felix said, it didn’t happen.

Yusuf retraced the route he took after leaving the hospital that night, afraid there might be surveillance cameras that had caught him leaving.

Fortunately, there was only a camera in the elevator. The hospital parking lot didn’t have one, and the surveillance in the elevator couldn’t prove anything significant—he could claim he was going back and forth to handle the hospital admission procedures, especially since it was the night they had just been admitted.

At six in the afternoon, Yusuf arrived at the Haidian branch and was directly taken to an interrogation room.

Since it was only a suspicion and there was no direct or circumstantial evidence, Yusuf wasn’t placed on the metal chair or handcuffed.

The person coming to take his statement was James Hart, accompanied by a young man and woman—the woman was the one who had called Yusuf.

"Yusuf Zuck, we’ve had dealings before. There’s a case now that requires your cooperation," James Hart said with a smile.

"Captain Hart, would I come voluntarily if I weren’t willing to cooperate? Just now, Ms. Ember gave me an earful on the phone. If I didn’t show up, she said she’d shoot me dead. I’m scared of that woman—I was thinking of getting chummy with her recently, but she’s so neurotic!" Yusuf was also shrewd. He knew the police could easily check his frequent calls with Ember Vance.

By saying these things, he intended to clear Ember’s name. He couldn’t let Ember face the music because of him.

"I’m not asking about Ember Vance. Yusuf Zuck, how old are you and where are you from?" the woman suddenly turned stern, taking on the role of bad cop.

"Oh, it’s you! Aren’t you the ’guess who’ person? So, you’re a cop. Hey, but you have a pretty nice voice. I thought you were one of those," Yusuf said, trying to deflect with humor.

With an irritated slam, the woman hit the table, "Stick to the relevant questions. I ask, you answer."

"Alright, alright, don’t rush, don’t rush," Yusuf Zuck said with a wry smile, "I’m from Yanggu County, Shandong, the place where Wu Song fought the tiger, and I’m twenty-one years old!"

"Only twenty-one?" The woman was taken aback, "You look quite mature for your age!"

"Yeah, I feel about forty at heart," Yusuf Zuck agreed with a nod.

"What’s your current occupation, and where do you live?" the woman continued to ask.

"I live in my former boss’ villa, and now I’ve got an antique shop in the Ruiz Family Park that’s under renovation."

"You live in your former boss’s villa? You own an antique shop?" Several people were somewhat surprised, as the intelligence they had received indicated that Yusuf Zuck had only been in the capital for less than two months.

"What do your parents do for a living?" James Hart interjected to inquire about his family background.

Yusuf Zuck replied, "Both my parents are unemployed; my mother has passed away."

"Where did you get the money to open the shop? As far as we know, it costs several million, if not tens of millions, to open a shop there, right?" James Hart asked confusedly.

"Like I said, I’m staying at my boss’s villa; all the money was lent to me by her. Just a few days ago she wired me sixty million from Hong Kong."

"Why would your boss lend you so much money?" the woman said, not buying it.

Yusuf Zuck looked at the woman as if she were an idiot and said, "Just suppose, if you were madly in love with me and you weren’t short of cash, wouldn’t you give me a few hundred million to start a business?"

"Be serious," the woman said, her face turning red and she glared at Yusuf Zuck.

"Hmm, what were you doing on the twenty-first, also this Monday?" James Hart cut in to ask the main question.

"On the twenty-first, I was in Yanggu in the morning and returned to the capital before it got dark!"

"Got back before dark?" A few people’s eyes lit up.

"Yeah, got back before dark," Yusuf Zuck affirmed with a nod.

"And what about the evening, where were you, whom did you see?" the woman continued to ask.

"The evening? I was at the hospital, my father is ill and was transferred to Ditan Hospital in the capital, and as for seeing anyone in the evening... I was at the hospital, I didn’t really meet anybody," Yusuf Zuck shook his head.

"At the hospital? The whole time?" James Hart frowned.

"Captain Hart, if I weren’t at the hospital, what could I possibly be doing? My father was only transferred that night. Upstairs and upstairs, taking care of paperwork, buying medicine, looking for patient services, and so on, I was busy until midnight, and after finishing, I slept at the hospital!"

"Who can prove that you did not leave the hospital?" the woman asked, "Name a few people."

"The duty nurse from that day, and also my father, do they count as witnesses? Oh right, there’s also a guy I had saved from a car accident earlier, he was at the hospital, too. I was there accompanying him until after nine in the evening."

"However, I hear I’m involved in some case, what case? I’m a law-abiding citizen, Captain Hart can vouch for me, I only do good deeds, I don’t do bad stuff. Just two days ago, I saved someone from a car accident late at night, everyone at the hospital can testify for me."

"Hmm, it’s actually nothing major, just have a bottle of water. Rest here for now," James Hart got up himself, even went to the lengths of helping Yusuf Zuck to unscrew the cap and handed him the bottle.

However, as he handed Yusuf Zuck the water, he also quickly glanced at both of Yusuf Zuck’s hands.

The murder that night had been committed with a gun and, based on the crime scene investigation, the gunman was an expert who was very proficient with firearms, having shot the victim to death with controlled bursts.

Usually, people who are skilled with guns will have some calluses on their hands.
