Chapter 824: Chapter 820: Increasingly Ruthless

Li Zhaojun walked into the bedroom across the hall, leaving the door open. She took off her loose training clothes, wearing only her underwear, and opened the wardrobe, pulling out a simple, elegant long dress.

Her graceful body was exposed in front of Ye Fan, but she felt no shame, not even a hint of discomfort, as if Ye Fan did not exist at all, or perhaps, she simply did not care whether Ye Fan existed.

The “Jade Maiden Heart Scripture” severs all seven emotions and six desires. All desires, whether towards others or others towards oneself, are discarded.

Looking at this nearly perfect body, Ye Fan felt not a trace of lust, but instead grew increasingly heavy-hearted.

Li Zhaojun finished dressing, pulled out her jade hairpin, and her three thousand strands of black hair fell like a waterfall, draping behind her.

She put on her shoes and quietly left the bedroom. As she passed by Ye Fan, there was not the slightest emotional fluctuation in her eyes.

The two left the villa one after the other. Ye Fan drove, while Li Zhaojun, for some reason, did not sit in the front passenger seat but chose the back seat. On the way to the courtyard of Grandpa Li, Li Zhaojun sat like this in the back seat, without a sound or any noise. If Ye Fan did not see her in the rearview mirror, he might have doubted whether she had gotten into the car at all.

Throughout the journey, Li Zhaojun looked ahead, but it was unclear where her gaze was focused.

Halfway there, Ye Fan stopped to buy some fresh fruit. They arrived outside a small building with red walls, parked the car, and Li Zhaojun got out without waiting for Ye Fan, heading directly to the second floor.

Her steps were light and fast. By the time Ye Fan caught up, she was already outside Grandpa Liu’s residence.

She reached out and pushed the door. The door creaked loudly but did not open. It was only then that Li Zhaojun seemed to realize something was wrong and knocked on the door.

“Who’s there?” Liu Tiezhu’s voice came from inside. When the old man came out, he was holding an old MP38 submachine gun. This gun had been with him since he served as Grandpa Li’s guard during the War of Resistance and had stayed by his side ever since.

Though he was old, his hearing had not been significantly impaired. Hearing someone rudely pushing the door just now, he became alert and instinctively took out his gun.

But when he saw that it was Li Zhaojun and Ye Fan, he breathed a sigh of relief and, somewhat embarrassed, placed the gun aside and opened the door, saying, “Oh, it’s Zhaojun and Xiao Fan. When did you get here? Come in and have a seat.”

The two entered the room, and Ye Fan warmly called out, “Grandpa Liu.”

However, Li Zhaojun did not respond. Ye Fan gently tugged at her hand, and only then did she seem to come to her senses and say, “Uncle Liu.”

In the past, she would call Liu Tiezhu, Grandpa Liu, but this time, she merely addressed him as Uncle Liu, unwilling to add even another word.

Upon hearing this, Liu Tiezhu was slightly taken aback but did not dwell on it. After inviting the two to sit down, he saw Ye Fan looking at the gun he had placed on the bookshelf and explained, “This gun isn’t loaded. I’ve had it for decades and haven’t been willing to part with it.”

Veterans, especially old revolutionaries like Liu Tiezhu, have a special attachment to guns. Ye Fan nodded and said, “A gun is a soldier’s second life.”

Liu Tiezhu was momentarily surprised and thought for a while before saying, “That’s a fresh way to put it.”

Just then, a slight noise came from the bedroom. Liu Tiezhu lowered his voice and said, “The old chief is still taking a nap. You two sit here for a while, but try to keep your voices down when you talk. The old chief’s sleep quality hasn’t been good recently and he often suffers from insomnia. He just fell asleep a moment ago.”

Li Zhaojun remained silent, only Ye Fan nodded. Just then, the old raspy voice of Grandpa Li came from the bedroom, “Tiezhu, who’s out there?”

“Oh dear, it’s my fault; I woke the old chief,” Liu Tiezhu said, blaming himself.

Ye Fan quickly addressed the bedroom, “Grandpa, it’s me, Xiao Fan. I came with Zhaojun to see you.”

“Oh, it’s Xiao Fan and Jun’er! When did you two arrive?” Grandpa Li said, coughing twice. Liu Tiezhu quickly walked towards the bedroom, and Ye Fan wanted to follow, but seeing Li Zhaojun unmoving, he took her hand and led her into the bedroom.

Liu Tiezhu helped Grandpa Li sit up, and Ye Fan hurried over to assist. Together, they got Grandpa Li up, but he insisted on getting out of bed. Ye Fan carefully held the old man’s legs, gently moving him to the edge of the bed before bending down to help him put on his shoes.

Seeing this scene, Liu Tiezhu could not hide the satisfaction and relief in his eyes. “Such a sensible child,” the old man thought to himself.

Even such a simple move as getting out of bed had tired Grandpa Li out a bit. After catching his breath, he said, “Help me to the balcony to sit for a while.”

Outside the residence stood a tall phoenix tree, with its lush canopy shading the balcony. The occasional breeze made it quite pleasant there.

After helping Grandpa Li to the balcony and settling him in the soft chair, Ye Fan and Li Zhaojun sat beside the old man. Grandpa Li said to Liu Tiezhu, “Tiezhu, you go about your business. I’ll chat with these young ones.”

Liu Tiezhu replied, “Alright, old chief,” and then left.

Ye Fan secretly fetched a fan, placed it in Li Zhaojun’s hands, and gave her a meaningful glance, prompting her to mechanically start fanning.

Feeling the gentle breeze on his face, Grandpa Li placed his hand on the back of Li Zhaojun’s hand and patted it lightly.

The old man’s hand was covered in age spots, loose skin, and raised veins, while Li Zhaojun’s hand was smooth as mutton fat jade, full of elasticity and the vitality of life.

The stark contrast between the two hands highlighted the relentless passage of time.

“Jun’er,” Grandpa Li said, “your hands are a bit cold; make sure to take care of your health.”

After a long pause, Li Zhaojun finally murmured, “I know, Grandpa.”

Hearing this, Ye Fan finally breathed a sigh of relief, as it meant that Li Zhaojun still acknowledged this grandfather in her heart.

Just as he was thinking this, Grandpa Li suddenly addressed him, “And Xiao Fan, you need to take care, too. Exercise regularly. Remember, years ago, the Chairman would bathe in cold water even in the dead of winter. At over seventy years old, he could still swim across the Yangtze River. Besides a strong will, he relied on a healthy body! The body is the capital required for revolution!”

Ye Fan quickly nodded in agreement.

Grandpa Li seemed to recall the glorious days of old, his eyes becoming a bit dreamy. After some time, he reached out with a trembling right hand, as if trying to grasp something. Ye Fan held the old man’s hand in mid-air, gently applying some pressure.

After a long while, the old man’s eyes regained some clarity. He took a deep breath, sighed softly, and said, “I’ve lived so long, and one by one, comrades and friends around me have left. Now, I truly miss them.”
