Chapter 745: Chapter 741 Field Investigation
The next day, Ye Fan selected five or six reconnaissance experts and left Dar es Salaam to fly to Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic.
In Central African Bangui, the Dragon Group had developed contact bases. Upon their arrival in Bangui, Dragon Group members immediately drove to the airport to pick them up.
After having a meal and resting for an hour or two at the Bangui contact base, Ye Fan and his team left Bangui by car and entered the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Central African Republic was an odd country. Its capital was the heart of the nation yet was set on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Therefore, as soon as Ye Fan and the rest left Bangui, they entered Congo directly.
Ye Fan wanted to personally inspect the battlefield environment. It was not that he mistrusted the Dragon Group’s intelligence, but the mission was too daunting, and he could not be at ease without surveying the battlefield himself. Moreover, he hoped to find inspiration within the combat zone that would enable them to better deal with the Kumogo underground bio-research facility and reduce the casualties of the Dragon Group as much as possible.
He had reviewed the report on the Kumogo underground bio-research facility the night before and thought Mo Shang’s casualty assessment of over half was optimistic. By his estimation, even committing all of the Dragon Group’s troops might not ensure capturing the Kumogo underground bio-research facility before reinforcements arrived.
Having been operational for at least forty years, the Kumogo underground bio-research facility’s defense installations could withstand missile attacks and were surely surrounded by supporting forces. Once the facility came under fierce attack, Ye Fan estimated that within at most two hours, reinforcements would arrive in bombers, followed by countless paratroopers.
Given that the Kumogo underground bio-research facility was located in Mbumu Province, Lafai of Central Asia, close to the border with Congo, Ye Fan planned to enter Central Asia from Congo to inspect the situation on the Kumogo grassland.
Armed with enough dry food and water, Ye Fan and his team need not stop for supplies in the towns and villages of the blacks. After all, a group of yellow-skinned people in a pure black nation stood out very distinctly. They might be detected by the Kumogo underground bio-research facility in advance.
As the sun set and the last streaks of the fiery glow faded from the sky, the night finally enveloped the entire African continent.
Ye Fan and his team pulled the car over into a concealed nook by the roadside, then got out to eat and rest.
“Boss, how about we roast some lion heads?” Liang Zi suggested.
The others immediately looked up, their expectant eyes turning to Ye Fan.
Life in Africa was tough, and the Dragon Group members had to find joy amidst hardship. When on missions that weren’t very urgent, they would occasionally hunt some game to serve as rations and improve their meals.
They were still far from the reconnaissance target and, on top of that, Liang Zi and the others were unaware of the deadly mission looming over the Dragon Group. As Ye Fan had scheduled the mission timeline rather leisurely, they believed it was not a very pressing task and thus were somewhat relaxed at the moment.
Ye Fan slapped Liang Zi on the back of the head with a smile and scolded, “You think lions are as common as wild rabbits everywhere, huh?”
Except for Liang Zi, who touched the back of his head with a somewhat sullen expression, the others all laughed. Ye Fan’s words were a clear sign that he allowed them to hunt.
“Go ahead. But don’t be too greedy— attracting carnivores wouldn’t be fun,” Ye Fan said to everyone with a smile.
Liang Zi and the others immediately got up excitedly, thumping their chests and saying, “Boss, just wait, we’ll be back soon.”
With that, Liang Zi and the others took their guns and military daggers and headed out into the wilderness.
“Remember to fit silencers!” Ye Fan reminded them.
“We got it!” Liang Zi and the others responded.
After Liang Zi and the rest had gone hunting, Ye Fan took out a military map and, under the light of a lamp, began to study it.
After about half an hour, Ye Fan heard the laughter of Liang Zi’s group from afar. He looked up in the direction of the sound and, sure enough, saw Liang Zi and the others carrying a medium-sized prey and holding several wild rabbits as they returned.
Ye Fan leisurely put away his map as Liang Zi and the others with their catch approached, calling out excitedly, “Boss, look what we’ve hunted! A deer!”
“Haha, we’re in luck,” Ye Fan stood up and laughed.
Liang Zi came back and threw the deer onto the grass, along with the wild rabbits.
“On our way back, we encountered a wolf. We killed it, but it took some effort to bury it,” Liang Zi said.
There was an abundance of game in Africa, but not all of it was tasty; for instance, wolf meat was rather unpalatable.
Next, naturally, they lit a fire and roasted the deer and rabbit meat to eat.
The Dragon Group members were accustomed to outdoor life, so while they grilled and ate the game, they told bawdy jokes and laughed heartily, thoroughly enjoying themselves.
Congo was likewise an underdeveloped nation, with an underdeveloped road system. Ye Fan and the team had to drive mostly on rough, uneven dirt roads, so they couldn’t travel fast.
It took them three days, but Ye Fan and his team finally arrived at Bondo, the city nearest Rafai within Congo.
However, Ye Fan and his team didn’t enter Bondo; instead, they continued driving along a small dirt road toward Libo County, which was close to the border.
Midway, they steered the car off the dirt road and headed out into the wilderness.
The vehicle was a modified off-roader, which had strong off-roading capabilities, and since the terrain wasn’t too rough, they drove deep into the wilderness for over two or three thousand meters before stopping.
After getting out of the car, Ye Fan gave the order, “We’ll rest here for half a day and through the night, and set out on foot tomorrow morning.”
Although still within Congo, the direction of Congo was the least vigilantly guarded by the Kumogo underground biochemical research facility, but Libo County was already within the warning range of the Kumogo facility.
In Congo, a relatively backward country in Africa, the county town of Libo was even more underdeveloped than a typical rural town in China; the appearance of two off-road vehicles would no doubt become the talk of the locality.
It was like how in China in the nineties, the appearance of a BMW in an ordinary county town could become the talk of the town over meals and tea.
That day, Ye Fan and the others replenished their water supply from a nearby river and then rested well, recuperating and storing up energy.
The next morning, Ye Fan left one person to watch the vehicles and led the other five Dragon Group members from the wilderness in the direction of Irafala.
Before dusk on the third day, Ye Fan and his companions successfully crossed the border of Congo, entered the territory of the Central African Republic, and reached the edge of the Kumogo Prairie near Irafala.
The Kumogo Prairie wasn’t a large prairie, but it wasn’t small either. The point where Ye Fan arrived on the edge of the prairie was about twenty kilometers away from the Kumogo underground biochemical research facility, essentially right under the nose of the facility.
Come nightfall, Ye Fan and his team set up tents, ate something and, leaving one person on night watch, the rest entered their tents to rest.
As they were already under the watchful eye of the Kumogo underground biochemical research facility and on an open prairie, Ye Fan and his team didn’t dare light a fire.
Around midnight, when Ye Fan and others who had been out in the wild all day had long fallen asleep, suddenly an urgent voice from outside the tent whispered, “Alert! Alert! Something’s happening!”
