Chapter 719: Chapter 615 The First Day of the New Year

Ye Fan and Zhao Lina went out for a patrol, which took approximately two hours, and then they returned to the unit’s dormitory.

Although they both had police duty over the Spring Festival, they weren’t required to be on the front lines at all times.

Back at the unit’s dormitory, even though only the two of them lived in Building A, they still didn’t dare to stay together during the daytime. Who could guarantee that someone wouldn’t come over to pay a New Year’s visit on the first day of the new year?

When Ye Fan got back to his dorm, he washed his face, changed his clothes, and then had a cup of warm water before sitting on the sofa to make New Year’s calls.

First, he called his mom and dad, and then he called Grandpa Ye.

After making New Year’s calls to his dearest family, Ye Fan continued with a call to Li Zhaojun.

He hadn’t been able to get through to Li Zhaojun the night before, and due to Zhao Lina’s situation, he hadn’t tried calling again.

Li Zhaojun hadn’t called him either. He was a bit worried—had Li Zhaojun become cold again? After all, it had been some days since he last saw her.

This time, the call still wouldn’t go through, and after trying twice, Ye Fan frowned with concern and turned to call Li Zhaojun’s mother, Ning Huwen.

Ning Huwen’s phone was quickly connected.

After Ye Fan offered his New Year’s greetings to Ning Huwen, before he could even ask about Li Zhaojun, Ning Huwen inquired, “Xiaofan, have you and Jun’er had a falling out? Why is Jun’er so quiet since she came home? She also often locks herself in her room for two to three hours at a time.”

“Mom, there’s no falling out between Zhaojun and me. Though, she has indeed been in a poor mood lately,” Ye Fan said, guessing Li Zhaojun must have become cold and detached again. As for the long hours spent locked in her room, he suspected she was practicing her martial arts.

Thinking this, Ye Fan sighed with concern in his heart.

Truth be told, Li Zhaojun’s change was largely his fault.

If it hadn’t been for Li Zhaojun taking a poisoned bullet for him, risking her life, she would have never met Qing Lian, her martial arts master. Qing Lian wouldn’t have recognized Li Zhaojun’s talents in ancient martial arts and taken her as a disciple. If Li Zhaojun hadn’t trained under Qing Lian, she wouldn’t have undergone such a change in temperament.

Hearing this, Ning Huwen sighed and said, “I see. Now that you two are an item, you need to call her more when she’s unhappy.”

“Yes, I’ll call her more often. Mom, please keep her company these next few days,” Ye Fan said. “By the way, I’ve been trying to call her, but can’t get through. Is she at home?”

“Yes. She has locked herself in her room again, and it’s been an hour,” said Ning Huwen, her voice laced with worry.

As the saying goes, “A mother knows her daughter best.” Moreover, Ning Huwen had raised Li Zhaojun all by herself and was very aware of her daughter’s changes.

After a moment’s thought, Ye Fan said, “Mom, could you please call her out for me?”

Ning Huwen agreed.

A few minutes later, through the phone, Ye Fan finally got to speak with Li Zhaojun.

“Zhaojun,” Ye Fan called out over the phone.

From the phone came a response that almost lacked any warmth, “Hmm.”

Hearing Li Zhaojun respond, Ye Fan breathed a slight sigh of relief. Maybe now that she was home with her mom, the atmosphere had softened a bit. Although to Ning Huwen’s eyes, Li Zhaojun had changed significantly.

“I can’t spend the Spring Festival with you, so don’t be upset with me, okay?” Ye Fan softened his tone.

“Hmm,” Li Zhaojun replied again.

“Were you practicing just now?” Ye Fan asked further. “After all, it’s the Spring Festival and it’s a rare chance for you to be with our mom. Don’t practice so hard; spend some time talking to her and keep her company.”

Li Zhaojun responded again with a simple, “Hmm.”

Ye Fan hesitated for a moment but was still very worried about Li Zhaojun’s state. He said, “Zhao Jun, I’m starting to miss you. Can we video chat?”

“…Sure.” It took a while for Li Zhaojun to respond.

Then, Li Zhaojun hung up the call.

Ye Fan immediately turned on his computer, and soon after, he saw Li Zhaojun come online on QQ, so he sent her a video chat request.

The video connected quickly.

Ye Fan watched Li Zhaojun through the video and found her even more beautiful than before. Yet, through the network, he found her beauty almost unreal, as if at any moment she would drift away back into the cold palace.

Suppressing his worries, Ye Fan smiled and exclaimed, “Wow, wife, you’ve become even prettier!”

After that, Ye Fan said a bunch of cheesy lovey-dovey things. Li Zhaojun’s cold, pretty face finally began to soften. When Ye Fan told her a “meaningful” joke, she finally showed a slight smile.

Ye Fan intentionally spoke in a somewhat indecent and rascally manner, trying to dissipate the air of Li Zhaojun being above the complexities of the mortal world. If not for the insecure network, he would have even preferred to have a more intimate chat with Li Zhaojun.

The video chat lasted for nearly an hour before it finally ended.

After the video ended, Ye Fan gave a bitter smile, feeling that his behavior just now was embarrassingly lecherous. However, if it made Li Zhaojun “warm up” a bit, he was more than willing.

At around 4 p.m., people began to arrive with gifts to pay New Year’s visits.

Ye Fan was not too familiar with Zhao Lina’s situation, but the first person to visit him to offer New Year greetings was Xu Xiangli.

Knowing that Ye Fan was newly stationed here and understanding his personality, Xu Xiangli knew Ye Fan would never accept expensive gifts, so she brought some homemade specialties from her family, like New Year cakes, crispy treats, and sticky rice dumplings.

“Leader, I hope my coming over to wish you a happy New Year isn’t disturbing you?” After entering the living room, Xu Xiangli said with a smile, placing the gifts down in a suitable spot. She was very familiar with Ye Fan’s dormitory.

Today’s weather was clear, and the temperature in the afternoon was mild. Xu Xiangli wasn’t wearing a down jacket, but a winter dress with a fashionable red coat over it, her pretty face delicately made up.

Ye Fan didn’t answer her, but sat on the sofa to make tea instead.

After setting the gifts down, Xu Xiangli walked over and sat on the sofa, then offered to take over making the tea.

Ye Fan gently pushed her jade hand away, saying, “That’s enough, don’t act like you’re not a guest.”

“Hehe…” Xu Xiangli giggled. Her long, slender, silk-stockinged legs naturally crossed as she laughed. “Then I’ll unceremoniously enjoy the leader’s service.”

They sat together chatting and sipping tea for about half an hour. Xu Xiangli didn’t leave immediately afterward but started to help Ye Fan clean up the room.

The bedsheets, which had been stained with a conspicuous red splotch, had already been snagged by Zhao Lina back to her room, so Ye Fan didn’t worry about Xu Xiangli finding anything.

Around five o’clock, Xu Xiangli left.

And on this New Year’s Day, Xu Xiangli was the only one to pay a visit, as others dared not disturb Ye Fan just yet.

Around 10:30 pm, Ye Fan cooked a late-night snack and called Zhao Lina over to eat together.

Zhao Lina came over wearing a loose set of pajamas, her long hair cascading over her shoulders. Her pretty face was adorned with a gentle smile and faint blush.

After finishing the late-night snack, the two sat together snuggled up on the sofa in the small living room for a chat, which lasted for about fifteen minutes. Finally, Ye Fan carried Zhao Lina to the bedroom.

The night was short-lived, yet full of springtime warmth…
