569: Chapter 565: Murderer?
(Part 3) 569: Chapter 565: Murderer?
(Part 3) Entering Teacher Jin’s home, the layout was the same as Su Mengchen’s.
Ye Fan remembered Su Mengchen once mentioned that Teacher Jin wore red socks, so while casually surveying Teacher Jin’s living room, he glanced at the balcony outside the floor-to-ceiling windows and happened to catch sight of a pair of red underwear, which seemed to be women’s.
Of course, it was just a fleeting glimpse, and Ye Fan, together with Su Mengchen, followed Teacher Jin into the study.
The study wasn’t large, around eleven or twelve square meters, with a big bookcase taking up a lot of space, neatly filled with books, primarily collections of poetry.
“Wow, Teacher Jin, you have so many books!” Su Mengchen exclaimed in admiration as she looked at the books on the big bookcase.
Teacher Jin humbly smiled and said, “Not that many, and some of the books I’ve bought, I just haven’t had the time to really read them.”
As he spoke, he reached out to pull a well-printed poetry collection from the shelf and handed it to Ye Fan, while saying, “I particularly favor Gu Cheng’s poetry.
Ah, Dai Wangshu’s poetry is also very good.”
“Holding an oil-paper umbrella,
I wander alone
In the long, long,
And exceedingly lonely rain alley,
Hoping to meet
A girl as lovely as a lilac,
Knotted with worry and gloom…”
Teacher Jin recited “Rainy Alley” with great relish, then said, “The language is simple, but the imagery is truly beautiful, it’s captivating.
The more beautiful the poetry, the more unadorned the words.
The principle is simplicity; only the true voice is my own…”
After discussing in the study for about half an hour, Teacher Jin said, “Excuse me for a moment, I need to go to the restroom.”
Teacher Jin left the study, and Su Mengchen wanted to chat with Ye Fan privately, but seeing him seemingly admiring the study, she held back.
Ye Fan’s gaze swiftly swept across the study, searching for evidence.
After a dozen seconds, he had looked at everything visible in the study, but hadn’t discovered anything, leaving only the rearview mirror drawers in front of the bookcase.
If Teacher Jin really was the murderer, then the evidence was likely in the drawers or his bedroom.
However, with Su Mengchen present, it wasn’t convenient for him to just pull open the drawers and search.
He had to figure out a way to distract Su Mengchen quickly.
Ye Fan’s mind raced, and he immediately had an idea.
Pretending to pat his pockets, he suddenly looked alarmed and exclaimed, “Oh no, I’ve lost my car keys!”
“Your car keys are missing?” Su Mengchen immediately became anxious for Ye Fan.
“Hurry up and search.”
Saying that, she bent down to search the study.
Feigning urgency, Ye Fan said, “Teacher Su, you look in your living room, and I’ll keep searching here.”
“Okay.” Upon hearing this, Su Mengchen, without thinking too much, immediately turned and left the study, quickly making her way back to her living room to look for the car keys.
Taking advantage of this gap, Ye Fan quickly pulled open the two drawers of the desk and, with great disappointment, saw that one of the drawers contained the first victim’s missing item—a delicate silver necklace with a purple amethyst pendant.
“Ah—” Ye Fan sighed regretfully, closed the drawer, then walked out of the study, and called out from the doorway towards the open entrance of Su Mengchen’s home, “Teacher Su, I found the car keys.”
Su Mengchen promptly appeared at the doorway, asking Ye Fan, “You found them?”
“Found them,” Ye Fan said, holding the car keys and shaking them in the air twice.
Su Mengchen breathed a sigh of relief, approached Ye Fan, and said, “Good that you found them.”
Returning to Teacher Jin’s home, Ye Fan and Su Mengchen didn’t enter the study again, instead sitting down in the living room.
Not wanting Su Mengchen to bring up his earlier “lost” car keys, Ye Fan casually picked another topic for small talk.
Teacher Jin emerged from the washroom after just a few words, and upon seeing Ye Fan and Su Mengchen already seated in the living room, he walked over, apologizing with a smile, “Sorry for keeping you waiting.”
“Haha, it’s nothing,” Ye Fan said with a laugh, standing up and glancing at his watch.
“I’ve disturbed you for so long, I should head back now.”
Teacher Jin’s face involuntarily showed a hint of disappointment.
Ye Fan’s earnest questions had satisfied his desire to share his knowledge of poetry.
Nowadays, even though people’s level of education had improved, they didn’t enjoy reading poetry anymore.
Finding a poetry lover was not easy.
Su Mengchen also felt regretful.
Although Ye Fan had come to visit her home, they hardly had a chance for a proper chat alone.
After bidding farewell to Teacher Jin, Ye Fan and Su Mengchen left the building together.
Once downstairs, Ye Fan didn’t ask Su Mengchen to stop.
Some people had seen him enter the campus with Su Mengchen, so she had to personally escort him out of the campus to prevent idle gossip about her.
On their way, Ye Fan and Su Mengchen chatted, with a charming smile constantly on Su Mengchen’s pretty face.
After recording his departure time on the visitor’s log at the school gate, Su Mengchen continued to accompany Ye Fan out of the school entrance.
Outside the school gates, they walked a few steps before Ye Fan stopped, turned around to face Su Mengchen, and smiled, “Thank you for taking me on a tour of the campus.
I really enjoyed myself tonight.”
“Hehe, I had a good time too,” replied Su Mengchen, her bright eyes and teeth glistening as she laughed gently.
Ye Fan said, “It’s getting late now, the wind is strong and the weather is cold.
Teacher Su, please go back.”
“Okay,” Su Mengchen replied, yet she made no move to turn around and seemed to have something more to say as she looked at Ye Fan.
Ye Fan didn’t notice; his mind was filled with regret that Teacher Jin turned out to be the serial killer with a perverted pathology.
“Well then, goodbye,” Ye Fan said and turned to leave, walking in the direction where his car was parked.
Watching Ye Fan take a few steps away, Su Mengchen couldn’t help but call out, “Mr.
Ye, wait a moment.”
Ye Fan stopped, turned back, and smiled, “What’s up?”
With a slight bite of her soft lower lip, Su Mengchen stepped two or three paces closer to Ye Fan and said, “Since you’re new to Mingde County, you’re probably unfamiliar with the place.
I’ve grown up here and know Mingde County quite well.
I also know a few people, so maybe I could be of some help to you.
Why don’t we exchange phone numbers and keep in touch more often?”
“Sure, that would be really great,” Ye Fan said with a smile, taking out his phone.
“Tell me your number, and I’ll call you.”
“Don’t mention it,” Su Mengchen blushed slightly, then added, “135XXXXXXXX.”
This was the first time in her life she had asked someone for their phone number, and that someone was a man.
In the past, others would always inquire about her private number, but to avoid harassment, she never freely gave it out.
After saving each other’s phone numbers, Ye Fan smiled and said, “I’ll have to trouble you with any questions I have in the future.”
“It’s no trouble, just helping each other out,” Su Mengchen replied.
With that, they said goodbye to each other once again.
Twenty minutes later, Ye Fan drove back home.
Sitting in his living room resting and enjoying a shoulder rub from Wei Ziling, his phone suddenly received a text message.
He picked up the phone, opened it to see, and to his surprise, it was a text from Su Mengchen: “Have you gotten home safely?”
“Yes, I’m home.
Thanks for asking,” Ye Fan replied with a smile to the text.
Almost immediately, Su Mengchen responded: “No problem.
Good night.”
“Good night,” Ye Fan replied back, then set his phone down.
