(Part 1) The following morning, Ye Fan woke to find that he had, incredibly, also turned on his side and was holding Li Zhaojun’s delicate body firmly in his arms.

“Ah…” Ye Fan sighed inwardly, realizing how weak his will was around Li Zhaojun.

Especially since he had allowed Li Zhaojun to help him with that last night, and she, always proud and aloof, agreed after only a moment’s hesitation.

That made him quite a bit proud.

But along with the pride, he felt a bit heavy at heart.

Even as an emotional fool, he knew that Li Zhaojun had truly fallen in love with him.

As he carefully released Li Zhaojun to lie back straight, she woke up.

She gave Ye Fan a smile, then conscientiously let go of him and moved away to straighten up her body.

Ye Fan, however, didn’t immediately lie straight.

Instead, he remained on his side facing Li Zhaojun and said, feeling ashamed, “Last night…”

“Nothing happened last night,” Li Zhaojun said calmly.

“Right, right,” Ye Fan replied twice, then turned over to lie on his back, his gaze fixed on the ceiling.

After a moment of silence, Ye Fan asked, “What time are you planning to leave to see…

I mean, to visit mom?”

“Eight o’clock,” Li Zhaojun replied.

Ye Fan asked again, “What does mom like?”

“I’ve already prepared a gift in Hua Hai City and brought it with me,” Li Zhaojun said.

“Later, you can just buy two boxes of fruit on the way.”

“That’s not appropriate, is it?” Ye Fan said.

Li Zhaojun replied, “What else can you buy so early in the morning?

You are not actually going to buy two packs of famous cigarettes, two bottles of high-end liquor, and two pounds of fine tea, are you?”

Ye Fan felt ashamed, thinking about how Li Zhaojun had made such thoughtful preparations for his grandfather’s birthday gift, while he hadn’t even thought to make time to visit her mother, let alone prepare a gift.

“Next time I will prepare with more thought in advance,” Ye Fan said, but his voice trailed off halfway through as he wasn’t sure if there would be a next time.

Li Zhaojun could hear the guilt in Ye Fan’s voice and changed the subject for him, “After the old man’s birthday, we have two days.

Can you stay with me for one night at my mother’s house?”

“Of course,” Ye Fan promptly replied.

“Thank you,” Li Zhaojun said softly.

Ye Fan smiled and replied, “You’re welcome.”

The two of them chatted a bit more before finally getting out of bed.

After washing up, Li Zhaojun still had to do her makeup and get dressed.

Ye Fan sat on the edge of the bed, admiring the view of Li Zhaojun getting ready from behind, finding it exceptionally beautiful.

After a dozen minutes, Li Zhaojun, still seated at the vanity table, turned her slender waist and faced Ye Fan with a smile, asking, “Do I look nice like this?”

Having slept for a night, Li Zhaojun’s complexion was noticeably radiant.

With her carefully applied makeup, she looked stunningly beautiful.

Her light question with a smile made Ye Fan feel as if a brilliant light shone before him, a vibrancy of color he’d never seen before, and he couldn’t help replying directly, “Beautiful.”

“Okay,” Li Zhaojun acknowledged, finally finishing her grooming.

As they left the room, Li Zhaojun naturally took hold of Ye Fan’s hand.

Ye Fan, feeling a bit of defiant frustration, grasped back, holding Li Zhaojun’s soft and tender hand, feeling its tender, smooth, and boneless touch.

Li Zhaojun, in turn, lightly pursed her lips, tacitly allowing Ye Fan’s small gesture.

After breakfast, Ye Fan said to Qiao Feixuan, “Mom, I plan to visit her mom with Zhao Jun this morning.”

“Mhm, that’s proper,” Qiao Feixuan said with a smile.

Then, she turned to Li Zhaojun and said, “Wait a moment, I have a gift for your mother.”

Having said that, she got up and went upstairs to fetch the gift.

A few minutes later, Qiao Feixuan came down with a gift box that was neither too big nor too small, and handed it to Li Zhaojun.

Li Zhaojun gratefully thanked Qiao Feixuan.

Qiao Feixuan waved her hand dismissively and settled back onto the sofa, then spoke with a hint of regret, “Back in the day, your mother and I hit it off quite well.

At the time, our financial situation was average, but every weekend we’d still dine at small restaurants.

Ye Fan’s dad and your dad, being men of similar interests, would inevitably discuss politics, the economy, national affairs, and so on, while your mom and I chatted about trivial matters.

But after your dad passed away, gradually we lost touch.”

Ye Fan listened and thought to himself, “No wonder you’re so nice to Li Zhaojun.”

At eight in the morning, Ye Fan drove Li Zhaojun out, heading to her mother’s house.

As they set out, Ye Fan noticed the overcast weather, predicting that the day would not be pleasant; perhaps even deprived of sunlight.

Li Zhaojun’s mother, Ning Huwen, was a public servant, a deputy division head – an impressive official locally, but in the national political center of the capital city, she seemed insignificant.

Li Zhaojun’s mother lived not in a villa community, but a regular public servant compound, assigned by her unit.

Driving into the compound, they parked downstairs of her mother’s building, and then Ye Fan, carrying the gift, joined Li Zhaojun up the elevator.

A few minutes later, Ye Fan and Li Zhaojun entered Li Zhaojun’s mother’s home.

Li Zhaojun’s mother was a middle-aged beauty, plainly attired and slightly outdated in appearance, yet her natural grace was unmistakable.

However, compared to Qiao Feixuan in terms of maintenance, she fell short.

Qiao Feixuan appeared to be in her thirties, vibrant and full of life, while Li Zhaojun’s mother was clearly a woman in her late forties, with a touch of twilight years.

The arrival of Ye Fan and Li Zhaojun clearly delighted Li Zhaojun’s mother, who warmly welcomed them, prepared fruit and tea, and, while sitting on the sofa, expressed her concern for them in every aspect.

After dining at Li Zhaojun’s mother’s home past twelve o’clock, Ye Fan and Li Zhaojun left together.

Entering the elevator and as the doors closed, Ye Fan turned to Li Zhaojun and couldn’t help saying, “I see that our mom isn’t living that well, why not bring her to Hua Hai City to live?”

“My mom won’t agree; she doesn’t want to give up her iron rice bowl.

She says that, in case my business fails and I lose everything, she can still support me,” Li Zhaojun explained, “This way, we’re not completely out of options.”

As they chatted, the elevator reached the ground floor.

Continuing their conversation, they walked out and approached the car parked in front of the building.

As Ye Fan was talking, Li Zhaojun suddenly pushed him with all her strength, but as a master of internal martial arts, he reflexively steadied himself with ease.

“Whiz—”

The next moment, the sound of a gun with a silencer reached his ears, and he felt an immense sense of crisis from deep within.

However, it was all too late; the ruthless bullet pierced into Li Zhaojun’s back as she attempted but failed to push him away.

Whiz—

Whiz—

Whiz—

Another three successive shots fired, but Ye Fan, holding Li Zhaojun’s delicate body, dodged like lightning.

The shooter seemed to realize further shots were futile and stopped.

Ye Fan also came to a halt.

“Ah—”

Li Zhaojun groaned in pain, a gush of blood involuntarily spurted from her mouth, spraying all over Ye Fan’s chest.

Ignoring the immediate grave danger ahead, Ye Fan hurried to check Li Zhaojun’s wounds.

His eyes wide with horror, he discovered the bullet had entered through her back, nearly piercing through her frail body as the blood flowed profusely.

Not only that, the bullet was poisoned.

The fierce venom, along with the blood, rapidly stripped away at Li Zhaojun’s fragile life force.
