Chapter 110: Chapter 110: I’m Really Not Too Reassured
Xinan ducked into the kitchen only to discover that they had run out of coffee beans long ago, so she had no choice but to stick her head out and ask, "We’re out of coffee beans, is instant coffee okay?"
"Just give me hot water," he replied.
"Okay."
Xinan took out the clean cups and fetched a cup of hot water for Cheng Yi.
But just as she was about to step out with the water, the house suddenly plunged into darkness.
Xinan was about to see what was going on when she tripped over a package on the floor, her body pitched forward, and she crashed to the ground with a "bang," her head also hitting the sharp corner of a floor tile. The pain made her furrow her eyebrows and, due to inertia, the cup in her hand shattered, spilling hot water all over the floor.
"Ouch, that really hurts!" Xinan exclaimed, holding her forehead.
Cheng Yi, following the sound, came over, "Don’t move."
As he spoke, his hand found Xinan’s waist, and he gently lifted her and placed her on the sofa.
"Where did it hurt?" Cheng Yi asked.
"My head hurts," Xinan replied, then shook her head. "No, it’s my foot that hurts."
Cheng Yi shook his head helplessly and took out his phone to turn on the flashlight.
Upon seeing the red mark on Xinan’s forehead, Cheng Yi frowned and said, "It’s just a scrape, just apply some ointment, it will heal quickly."
Xinan touched her slightly swollen forehead, "Will it leave a scar?"
"No, if you don’t apply the ointment now, the wound might heal soon."
Xinan remained silent.
With a sigh, Cheng Yi asked, "Do we have any medicine at home?"
Xinan nodded, "The medicine is in the second drawer on the left side of the TV cabinet."
Cheng Yi fetched the medicine and instructed Xinan to hold the flashlight while he applied it to her wound.
"Hisss." The moment the ointment touched the wound, Xinan couldn’t help but inhale sharply.
Cheng Yi stopped his movements, saying, "Endure it, it’ll get better soon."
"Okay."
Cheng Yi sped up his movements, making them gentler at the same time.
Xinan slightly looked up at Cheng Yi, whose face was intermittently illuminated by the flashlight, causing her heart to fluctuate, but she could clearly see his expression.
His expression was focused and earnest, as if he was doing something extremely important.
Xinan bit her lip and said nothing, but a wave of warmth surged inside her.
"Which foot is hurting?" Cheng Yi suddenly asked, his voice gentle.
Xinan was startled, then remembered to extend her right foot, "This one."
On hearing that, Cheng Yi bent down, lifted her right foot, removed the shoe, and inspected it, then cleaned it with medical alcohol.
His fingers were long and clean, and as he held her ankle, Xinan felt her heartbeat suddenly accelerate, as though it would jump out of her chest.
Xinan lowered her gaze and stared quietly at him, her long, curly eyelashes casting fan-shaped silhouettes like butterfly wings on her eyelids.
"Fortunately, the sprain isn’t serious, otherwise you might not be able to go out for the next few days," Cheng Yi placed Xinan’s foot back on the sofa.
Xinan gave a low "oh."
"Don’t leave clutter around the house anymore. What if this happens again? What will you do?" Cheng Yi gently replaced Xinan’s foot on the sofa, then pulled a blanket over her body.
Xinan was about to argue that she wasn’t as sloppy as he described, and who would have expected a power outage at home.
But before she could speak, she heard Cheng Yi continue, "Having you live here alone, I’m really not at ease..."
Xinan awkwardly turned her head, her cheeks quietly flushing again.
"I’m going to check the power, see if it’s a short circuit." Cheng Yi patted her head.
"Mmm."
Cheng Yi soon returned, reporting, "It’s not a short, it seems like the whole apartment building is out of power."
Disturbed, Xinan contemplated that the apartment she currently rented had aged, but this was her first encounter with a blackout.
She would need to find a new place to live, thankful that Cheng Yi was here today, as she might not have remained so calm if she were alone.
"Do we have candles?" Cheng Yi inquired.
Xinan shook her head—nowadays, who still used candles? Besides, she hadn’t lived here long enough to think about stocking up on such items.
Cheng Yi sighed, "Wait at home, and I’ll go buy some."
Xinan nodded, but as Cheng Yi walked to the door, she changed her mind, "Can you... can you not go?"
Cheng Yi turned back. "Are you scared?"
Despite not wanting to admit it, Xinan honestly nodded.
"Then I’ll stay here with you."
Cheng Yi returned and sat next to Xinan.
"You’re not going home tonight?" Xinan asked as if seeking confirmation.
"Yes, I’m not leaving. I’ll stay here with you," he affirmed with a slight nod.
Xinan lowered her head and softly uttered "oh."
The surrounding darkness enveloped them, and as they did not speak, the living room felt extraordinarily quiet.
With no power, there was nothing to do; they couldn’t just sit idly on the couch—it was too boring.
Xinan thought for a moment, then asked aloud, "Do you... do you watch movies?"
"What movie?" he asked.
"I... haven’t decided yet." Xinan awkwardly craned her neck.
Cheng Yi remained silent.
Eventually, they randomly selected a foreign movie to watch on their mobile phones, and since Xinan’s phone was almost out of power, they used Cheng Yi’s phone.
Xinan, concerned Cheng Yi couldn’t see, shifted inside the sofa to let him move in closer, also bringing him a bit closer to herself, though she seemed not to notice this subtle change.
The beginning of the movie was somewhat bland and quiet, drawing Xinan’s attention away after a while as her gaze unintentionally started drifting towards Cheng Yi.
However, he seemed quite engrossed in the film; she hadn’t expected him to enjoy such artistic films.
After some time, sudden "whispering and kissing" noises emanated from the phone.
Kissing was quite normal in European and American movies, but at this moment, Xinan felt extremely uncomfortable, wishing she hadn’t chosen this film.
Later, as the lead characters’ kissing grew more intense, Xinan startled, inadvertently glancing at the man next to her.
With only the dim light from the phone illuminating his face, Xinan couldn’t see his expression clearly, but one thing was certain—he was indeed staring at the phone screen.
Men... they all liked watching this stuff, Xinan thought silently.
Xinan shifted her gaze back to the screen, then was totally taken aback.
She had looked away for just five seconds, and now they were on the bed.
Xinan again tried to gauge Cheng Yi’s reaction, but by then, his gaze had moved from the phone to her, those dark, profound eyes focused intently on her with a probing look.
