Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Love-struck Cheng Yi

In the end, Xinan still hadn’t brought up her departure to Cheng Yi.

That night Xinan hadn’t slept at all, her mind consumed with thoughts of Cheng Yi’s illness.

What if the condition worsened?

He was still so young, didn’t have children of his own...

What if it couldn’t be cured? Would he pass away just like that?

Xinan had seen Cheng Yi secretly taking medication several times before, she had thought it was just stomach pain, so she didn’t say anything. Now, thinking back, she felt truly frightened.

All the clues had been there.

Come daybreak, all the answers would be revealed.

The next day, as dawn broke, Xinan got out of bed, freshened up, and casually put on a T-shirt and shorts.

She opened her door, and next door, another door-opening sound echoed. She and Cheng Yi faced each other.

"Good morning," they both said in unison.

Xinan forced a small smile. "Why are you up so early?"

It was only five thirty, and the hospital wouldn’t open until nine.

Moreover... didn’t he usually get up after six? Or was it that he was nervous too, causing him to lose sleep?

"I got up early to finish today’s work ahead of time," Cheng Yi said as he pulled his bedroom door closed and looked at Xinan. "You’re up quite early too."

He seemed immensely calm; Xinan couldn’t detect a hint of anxiety on his face.

Xinan chuckled awkwardly—it was all because of him. She had worried all night, barely slept, and here he was, seemingly unbothered at all. It’s like how the emperor is never in a hurry, but his eunuchs are.

"I went to bed too early last night, so I woke up early and decided to get up."

Cheng Yi nodded and then headed to his study.

Because of his check-up, Cheng Yi hadn’t eaten breakfast, and Xinan just had some bread to tide her over.

Having notified the hospital in advance, Cheng Yi was directly received by the dean and specialists from the gastroenterology and oncology departments.

Since it had been nearly half a year since Cheng Yi’s last examination, he needed another biopsy.

Because the examination was thorough, they would have to wait several hours for the results.

Cheng Yi had suggested going back first and picking up the report tomorrow, but Xinan was stubborn and insisted on knowing the outcome; she couldn’t put her mind at ease otherwise.

After the examination, Chen Ze teased Cheng Yi: "I’ve always urged you to get treatment in the past, with no success. That girl says a few words, and here you are. Cheng Yi... you’ve really fallen for her."

Cheng Yi smiled, "Falling into her hands is my honor."

Chen Ze shook his head, "How did I never notice you were so lovesick before?"

"Lovesick?" Cheng Yi seemed puzzled.

Chen Ze criticized jokingly, "You’re really out of touch if you don’t even know what being lovesick means."

Cheng Yi: "..."

"Forget it. ’Lovesick’ simply means that lovers see no flaws in each other and become irrational and unable to objectively assess things that happen in love..." Chen Ze patiently explained to him.

"Oh, then I’m only ’lovesick’ for Xinan."

"You’re hopeless," Chen Ze now seriously doubted that Cheng Yi’s illness was not in his stomach, but in his brain.

Because they hadn’t eaten breakfast, after the examination, Xinan and Cheng Yi went out for lunch before returning to the hospital.

By then, the pathology report results were already out.

And thus, Xinan was informed that Cheng Yi didn’t have cancer at all.

Upon learning this, Xinan was stunned for a good five minutes before she burst into tears of joy. "Director, are you sure? Are you certain it’s not cancer?"

Cheng Yi held Xinan in his arms, worried she might collapse from overwhelming happiness.

He too was surprised by the results; he hadn’t believed it when he was diagnosed abroad, double-checking numerous times. But the doctors were sure in telling him it was gastric cancer, and a severe case at that.

"I stake my thirty years of medical experience, it’s not cancer, his reports showed no signs of malignancy," the director asked Cheng Yi, "Mr. Yi, was the hospital you had your diagnosis abroad, credible?"

"It was credible, one of the top hospitals in New York."

"That’s strange then, how could such a hospital make such a basic mistake?" The director was puzzled.

"Doctor, if it’s not cancer, what were my symptoms all about?" Cheng Yi still couldn’t believe he had been misdiagnosed.

The director sighed, "It was gastritis, and the symptoms are very similar to stomach cancer."

Cheng Yi finally heaved a sigh of relief; the heavy stone that had hung over his head for nearly half a year had finally dropped.

The director continued, "Mr. Yi, you could call to inquire about the misdiagnosis."

"Alright."

"Though it’s not cancer, your gastritis is quite serious. I’m prescribing you some medication; after you go back, make sure to take them on time, and strictly avoid alcohol and smoking."

Before Cheng Yi could speak, Xinan chimed in first, "Okay, doctor, I will definitely make sure he takes his medication on time when we get home."

As they left the hospital, Cheng Yi felt an unusual sense of relief. He considered this whole ordeal as the heavens’ fondness, giving him another chance.

Due to this incident, Cheng Yi would later donate to charity organizations every year, hoping to reduce sorrow and pain in the world, allowing those who work hard to live without the torment of diseases.

He glanced at the person beside him, his usually stern face softened with a faint smile.

Back home, Xinan took out the prescribed medicine, labeled them, "This one is taken once a day, one pill at a time, this one is three times a day, two pills each time..."

She recited several medications in a row and finally turned her attention to Cheng Yi, "Oh right, give me that."

"What?" Cheng Yi pretended not to know.

Xinan held out her palm and motioned to Cheng Yi, "The cigarettes, the doctor said you shouldn’t smoke recently. I’m afraid you won’t be able to resist, so let me keep them safe for you!"

Xinan didn’t realize how much she resembled a caring wife at the moment.

Cheng Yi smiled, "The little one remembers quite well, huh?"

He reached into his coat pocket and handed over the cigarettes and lighter without any hesitation.

Cheng Yi didn’t dislike being constrained by someone; on the contrary, he liked it—he enjoyed having Xinan taking care of him like this.

If Chen Ze were there, he would probably tease him again for being lovesick.

Cheng Yi’s stomach had suffered severe damage over the years, so full recovery wouldn’t be easy.

Soon after, Uncle Cheng and Aunt Cheng found out about the situation and specifically hired a chef from abroad to help nurse his stomach back to health.

The Cheng Family took this matter very seriously, not only bringing in specialists to handle his diet but also arranging for doctors to check on Cheng Yi at home every month.
