Chapter 10: Stumbling Through Matches...
"But though this world may be low-level, I must nonetheless remain cautious," Jin reminded himself, fully aware that Martial Saints could easily slap him out of existence if they wanted to.
The extent of his knowledge didn’t matter one single bit if he didn’t possess the power necessary to protect himself. This would remain constant throughout all worlds and timelines.
"The Outer Sect Arena though." Jin changed his line of thought, turning his head to look up at the towering colosseum. Its architecture, like the rest of this world, was very primitive and basic, but it was nevertheless grand.
More importantly, there were beings within the radius of the Outer Sect Arena that immediately drew Jin’s attention. His Against-Heaven’s Understanding thrummed with excitement.
"Outer Elders," he said as he entered the massive Arena and looked up to the Judge stands. There were three of the Elders, and each one was a 1st Layer Martial Master, making them the first Martial Masters that Jin, not Yang Kai, encountered in this world.
But besides a little interest, Jin didn’t care about them.
It was instead the misty figure hiding in the spectator stands that grabbed his attention. This figure, with intentions unknown, possessed a strength near the very peak of the Martial Master Realm.
Considering that each higher Layer in Huaxia posed a wider gap than the ones that came before, this mysterious misty figure could beat dozens of those Outer Elders with ease. It wouldn’t even be a challenge.
"Finally!" Chen Hao’s obnoxious voice echoed from afar, a cruel grin spreading across his face. "I thought you’d never show up, you wastrel!"
Jin looked away from the mysterious misty figure that no one seemed to realize the existence of. His once intrigued gaze fell to one of boredom as soon as he saw the uninteresting brat hollering like a wild beast.
Instead of feeding the fire that was his stupidity, Jin simply angled his head so as to look in a different direction.
Naturally, Chen Hao was angered by this clear disregard of his status and strength. However, upon remembering that they were about to enter into a tournament where, although life and death were forbidden, crippling an opponent was possible, he showed an evil smirk.
’Let’s just wait and see if you can still be so brazen when we get matched in the Arena, you garbage.’
The other Outer Disciples in the waiting area noticed the interaction between Chen Hao and Yang Kai. But beyond initial curiosity, they really didn’t care, as the feud the two of them had was sure to end one-sidedly.
"Yang Kai..." trepidation filled the heart of a fair-skinned young maiden with long silky hair. Her big, round eyes were focused on the apathetic young man looking around like he was searching for some kind of miracle.
This young girl was one of the five Martial Apprentice 5th Layer Geniuses, and was called Xin Meng. f\ree webn ovel(.)com
Xin Meng had a close relationship with the previous Yang Kai, and though nothing had happened between them until this point, they could be considered childhood sweethearts. This, unfortunately, didn’t mean much of anything to Jin, as he wasn’t interested in romance anymore.
Perhaps the him of before witnessing the destruction of the Orphanage had whimsical wishes of a sweet, passionate romance. But after a whole night of kneeling outside the Chapel, he came to realize that before pursuing worldly pleasures, he had to achieve strength.
And not just normal strength—but Invincibility.
Only after becoming invincible throughout heaven, Earth, and the boundless Cosmos would he deign to get romantically involved with anyone.
This was not only a vow he made for the sake of putting his goals above all else, it was also there so as to not add burdens to himself. After all, although he wasn’t much stronger than an ant in the Main World, what about a year into the future?
Ten years?
A thousand years??
A million years???
Against-Heaven’s Understanding could only be bound to a single person, and there was only one in all existence. With it, Jin had the potential to ascend beyond the stars. But as for everyone else related to him...
They were destined to be left in the dust, or even worse—to hold him back.
...
"The first matchups have already been announced, so as of right now, the 123rd Annual Inner Disciple Advancement Competition will officially commence!"
"Contestant Yun Zhao and Contestant Lei Guan, please take to the stage!"
The Announcer wasn’t weak, and was an Outer Deacon in the Martial Apprentice 7th Layer Realm. This meant he possessed abilities adequate enough to enable him to call name after name without respite, quickly beginning and
ending dozens of matches.
The cheering of the spectators, who were mostly Outer Disciples, wasn’t too loud, but it was still sufficient enough to boost the morale of the contestants.
It didn’t take any longer than a few hours for more than 80% of the original 113 qualified Outer Disciples to be defeated and subsequently kicked out of the Competition.
Now, with only a little over 20 remaining, the Semifinals would commence.
"The results of the disciples thus far have been within our expectations," the long white-bearded Outer Elder said. "Well... except for that one."
The other Outer Elders instantly knew who ’that one’ referred to, as there was an Outer Disciple who couldn’t really be considered a Dark Horse, however still exceeded their original predictions.
The reasoning behind this being that Jin, with the meagre strength of someone in the Martial Apprentice 1st Layer Realm, literally stumbled through his matches...
