Chapter 987: Chapter 39 Waterlogging Area_2
"Why should I?" the thin man frowned, not wanting to move. Soaking in the water would consume a lot of stamina. What if danger struck?
"Don’t you have any sense of public morality?" the square-faced man roared in dissatisfaction, relying on his robust physique; he didn’t care about this guy.
"So many people? Why pick on me?" the thin man protested, grabbing a rifle, "Don’t stand on the moral high ground to blame others."
No one interjected. The newbies, who had been ready to scold the thin man, remembered where they were upon seeing the muzzle of his gun. There were no laws here; disagreements could easily lead to bloody conflicts.
"Hmph!" The thin man glanced at them disdainfully and continued to sit on the back of his chair, so that less of his body would be submerged.
"Forget it, come on, please make room for a seat," the square-faced man said to a female university student beside him. She, unaccustomed to being stared at, hurriedly stood up to give up her seat.
"Don’t move. If you keep soaking, you’ll use up a lot of energy, which could lead to your death," the thin man evidently wanted to spite the guy, pressing down on the girl’s shoulder.
The female student stiffened at the mention of the word "death," not knowing what to do.
"Ignore them. Surviving on your own is what’s most important," the thin man, realizing the long-haired university student was quite attractive, started to be even more attentive. "This place clearly follows the law of the jungle, where the strong prevail over the weak. What’s the use of giving up your seat besides earning a bit of goodwill? Remember, if you show mercy, you’ll be the one to die!"
"I’m sorry!" The long-haired girl was evidently persuaded and sat back down, hugging her head and ignoring the rest.
"Hey, how can you talk like that?" the square-faced man glared at the thin man, eyes filled with anger.
"I don’t care if you die!" the thin man spat out and flipped him the middle finger.
No newbies interfered anymore. Hearing the thin man’s words, they all began to reflect. After all, everyone wanted to survive.
"Selfish people will never survive in this game, just you wait and see!" the square-faced man bellowed loudly, his gaze sweeping over the newbies in the carriage.
"Hmph, as long as I live longer than you," the thin man remained defiant, cursing before patting the long-haired girl’s shoulder, "Hey, let’s get acquainted. I’m Pang Lixing!"
"My name is Yu Mei," the long-haired girl shuddered slightly, remaining guarded.
Pang Lixing wasn’t in a hurry. The road ahead was long; he’d start by building rapport.
"Brother, take this seat," a burly man stood up from his seat and waded into the water, vacating his spot.
"Thank you," the square-faced man helped the woman to the seat and then extended his hand, "Jian Fan."
"Lu Tao, looking forward to working well with you in the future," Lu Tao admired Jian Fan’s good nature. Only someone like that was worth trusting; otherwise, being shot in the back would be too late even if you cried.
The waterlogged area was vast, and repelling an attack would be a problem. Just when the Conquerors were anxious to leave this section of the road, misfortune struck—the bus, having soaked too long, finally broke down.
"What now? Without the bus, sports cars also can’t withstand soaking, though there are a few tanks, but certainly, we can’t make the Conquerors drive them, right? Moreover, they can’t hold many people?" Lu Fan tallied the vehicles in the Trojan Zone, frustrated. "We can only walk."
"And how long would that take?" Zheng Xiaxia hurried over with her group, touching her forehead upon hearing this. She really wanted to ditch these newbies; they were nothing but a burden.
"By foot, roughly six hours," Dantai conveyed through the throat microphone, having learned that Bai Guo had flown out of the waterlogged area. With this, timing was easy to calculate.
"Six hours in the water? Do you think the average newbie can withstand that?" Xu Nian stood on the Beetle, looking at the bus. The newbies, with anxious faces, stared helplessly out the car windows. This made him feel superior.
"What should we do, then? Throw them away?" Lu Fan curled his lips, if this kid kept being so shameless, it would be a wonder if Tang Zheng didn’t eliminate him.
"Not a bad suggestion." Xu Nian didn’t pick up on the sarcasm in Lu Fan’s words and actually nodded nonchalantly, "Don’t forget, before us, there were other Trojan Squads rushing towards the Bridge. If we don’t complete the mission, everyone will be punished."
"Are we just going to give up on the lives of over sixty people?" Xu Biyun couldn’t bear the thought, as the newbies had no means to protect themselves - they were certain to die if they left the Conquerors.
"Give them food and water, and let them fend for themselves. We’re not their parents; why should we look after them?" Xu Nian persisted, deliberately distorting the truth, "Who knows? If they leave the team, they might even unleash greater potential."
Xu Nian clearly looked down on newbies, so he didn’t think to lower his voice, resulting in all the newbies hearing him and turning pale with fear.
"Group Leader, don’t give up on us." A female university student saw Tang Zheng, tears streaming down her face, as she shouted out loud. In the silent Passage, a sense of despair spread.
"Don’t panic, as long as you don’t fall behind, the team will help everyone," Tang Zheng promised, immediately relieving the newbies, who felt that he indeed was a reliable Group Leader.
"Why bother saving these wastes of space? It’s a pure waste of time." Xu Nian sized up Tang Zheng, testing him, "Do you have a moral fetish? Or do you want to play the savior?"
"What if the conditions for passing are related to the number of team members?" Tang Zheng’s remark immediately shut Xu Nian up; the whimsically malicious Trojans could indeed come up with such a restriction, and Dantai and the others hadn’t forgotten the experience from the last round where the team with the fewest people received punishments.
"Damn it, there’s not a single hint. Out of all Trojan Zones, the Silver Trojan is the biggest pain in the ass," Zheng Xiaxia clearly remembered the unpleasant experience too and didn’t argue.
"What are you waiting for? Get off the bus, let’s go!" Xu Nian yelled, six hours isn’t too long to waste.
Tang Zheng wasn’t so foolish as to share joys and sorrows by walking on foot with the newbies; bringing them along was only out of concern for the numbers. As for a sense of justice, you can’t eat that.
The water reached waist height, and the moment the newbies stepped in, they felt a chill through their Protective Clothing. Thinking about the unknown distance they had to walk, their faces turned dreadfully unpleasant.
Walking through the water, the monotony was grating; over time, it became nothing but torture, consuming a lot of energy. Barely half an hour in, the woman who had just had a cramp couldn’t hold up any longer, cramping once again and collapsing into the water.
Lu Tao and Jian Fan were walking beside her and quickly lent a hand, preventing her from drowning.
"Group Leader, can she get in the vehicle?" Jian Fan shouted toward the war chariot, his voice full of plea. He was a kind man.
"Help her over, and you and he can get on as well," Tang Zheng emerged from the Whale Hunting Vehicle, allowing Lu Tao and Jian Fan to join him. Giving appropriate help to such people also eased the team atmosphere somewhat, with a cold indifference flowing among these newbies that was almost suffocating.
The newbies were envious, especially Pang Lixing, who was almost gnashing his teeth with jealousy.
A female newbie’s eyes flickered, and with a cry, she fell back into the water, loudly crying for help. Unfortunately, her acting skills were too poor to deceive Tang Zheng.
"Stop faking, save your energy for walking," Zheng Xiaxia tapped on the Beetle, coldly snorting with disdain.
The woman got up awkwardly, her face flushed with embarrassment, walked a few steps, and then suddenly went down, falling into the water again.
"Told you to stop faking, didn’t you hear?" Zheng Xiaxia got angry, ready to give her a piece of his mind.
"No, it’s a monster, get away!" Tang Zheng took a glance and saw red blood spreading in the water - the woman’s screams were filled with deep, marrow-deep despair before abruptly coming to a halt. He raised his Rifle to Shoot, but the newbies were scrambling into a mess trying to reach the war chariot, blocking his line of fire.
Splosh, a flurry of splashes rose, and a three-meter-long monster similar to a Crocodile burst from beneath the surface, its massive maw lined with sharp Teeth, clamped onto an unlucky newbie at the waist, and with a forceful pull, snapped his body in two, scattering copious amounts of blood.
Splurt, splurt, much like a wasp’s nest pierced open, more aquatic Bugs suddenly surged forth, launching an attack on the Trojan Squad. (To be continued.
