Chapter 922: Chapter 63: The Blossoming of Life_3

"Three times." This was the limit of recklessness, and Tang Zheng was even considering letting the Bug Heart devour S-grade artifacts constantly to replenish his Life Energy.

Dantai hesitated for a moment but still moved towards that row of the wounded.

"Group Leader, am I going to die?" The University student who had lost his sight even had his hearing damaged; acid had burned away his ears.

Dantai was silent, not knowing how to start speaking.

"Deputy Group Leader!" The soldier with the broken leg muttered, guessing Dantai’s intention, then revealed a grim smile, "No need to ask, I agree."

"I’m sorry, I can’t take you all back." Dantai gripped the soldier’s shoulder, pressing hard; to tell the truth, making this decision was also very painful for him.

"It’s going to be that black Eagle, right? No problem, let this waste of a man give his last bit of strength for the team." The soldiers seemed rather philosophical about it, "But I have a request."

"Speak."

"I want to write a letter to my parents, tell them that their son won’t be able to support them in their old age." The soldier tried not to cry, but just thinking about his parents’ graying hair made him unable to hold back the sobs.

"I want you to promise that if even one Conqueror makes it back, they will bring back your letters, so that your parents won’t have to worry about food and clothing for the rest of their lives." Dantai took out paper and pen, distributing them to the newbie wounded, "Everyone writes one. The coming combat will be even more brutal; anyone could die."

"Everyone write." The tall Platoon Leader took the paper and pen, squatting in the corner to begin writing. A female University student started writing, tears overflowing and dropping onto the paper.

"Why must we suffer all this?" Faced with the female University student’s question, Tang Zheng and Dantai kept silent; they had no answer.

Tang Zheng clenched his fist, nails almost piercing his palm. He felt a profound sense of powerlessness, just as the Silver Trojan had said, they were all but toys, never able to control their own destinies.

"Damn it." Xu Liangmao punched the wall, thinking of his adorable twin daughters.

The writing of last words was not yet completed when combat erupted once again. This time, a full fifty Teleportation Gates appeared on the battlefield, spewing an endless swarm of Bugs without end.

"Weren’t there supposed to be forty-two gates?" Ruan Feifei, pale from overexertion, couldn’t help but complain. In the time it took to utter that one sentence, the sea of Bugs had already advanced to within five meters of the Fort. The Teleportation Gates near Sub-castle No. 2 were denser, so there were more Bugs, and it was quickly overwhelmed; the fort, covered in Bug blood, cracked and seemed about to collapse.

Woosh, countless White Ice Layers surged forth, freezing the vicinity. It was evident from the shrinking range of coverage that Li Xinlan had also reached the end of her strength.

Merely relying on S-Class Firearms was no longer enough to clear out the sea of Bugs; only by launching Abilities was it possible.

"You guys focus on the Teleportation Gates." Tang Zheng prepared to release his Ability to sweep away the Bugs but was stopped by the soldier with the broken leg.

"Wait, Group Leader, save your Ability for the very end. We might need it if we break through." The soldier said, then looked at him and smiled, "How do I launch the Ozark Eagle?"

Every second was precious, and Tang Zheng knew he shouldn’t hesitate, but seeing the young soldier ready to die, he found it difficult to be ruthless.

"Tang Zheng, you’re the Group Leader!" Dantai wanted to persuade him further, but then saw Tang Zheng take off the silver ring branded with an Eagle and throw it to the soldier, and he let out a sigh of relief.

"Just think about releasing the Eagle." Tang Zheng felt deeply pained. Why were the ones dying always the newbies with good character?

"Come forth, Eagle." The soldier managed only to get these words out before a slash of white light flared, forming the Ozark Eagle. All of the soldier’s Life Energy surged into the ring like a tide, powering the Eagle. His skin began to dehydrate and crack, shrinking visibly as he grew thinner.

Dantai gave him a mouthful of sweet spring, but it couldn’t make up for the consumption.

"Combat mates, survive!" The soldier looked at the tall Platoon Leader, his lips moving to finish his last words, but no sound came out as he died.

The Ozark Eagle rampaged across the sky, each strike swift as a meteor, blasting the sea of Bugs to scatter and crumble continuously, leaving behind a multitude of corpses. This was the soldier’s will and intention, the final awakening of his life.

"It’s still not enough." Watching the wild charge of the sea of Bugs, Tang Zheng sighed. He was about to launch Steel Sky, but another gravely wounded soldier stopped him.

"Heh, it’s my turn now. Can’t let the Seventeenth Squadron lose face!" The soldiers crawled to their dead combat mate, took the ring from his hand, and continued to pour in their life.

Watching the two soldiers die, Ruan Feifei’s expression fluctuated. She had intended to conserve some strength for the battles to come, but seeing this scene made her feel ashamed.

"To trade death for an attack? Fine, give me the ring!" The blinded student leaned against the wall, stretching out his hand. He had heard the previous conversations, so he wasn’t surprised, "Rather than living in pain, or even being eaten by the Bugs, let me die with some value."

Looking at those slightly trembling hands extended, everyone understood that the University student was also afraid, yet he didn’t shrink back, still choosing to face death head-on.

The ring was placed in the University student’s hand; he grinned broadly, leaving behind his last words, "What a pity, always thinking of playing DOTA, never even had a romance, heh, how sad!"

With the formidable Ozark Eagle, and the combined area-of-effect Abilities of Li Xinlan and the three others, they finally held out against this wave of the Bug swarm. However, three more were injured, and half of Sub-castle No. 2 had collapsed, no longer defensible.

All the survivors were exhausted to death, without the extra strength to repair anything, so they could only return to the Mother Fort.

When Pang Meiqin returned to the Mother Fort, she saw Dantai squatting in front of a dried corpse, pulling a note from the dead man’s hand. Then this man, who had always been cold-hearted, glanced over the note, his gaze freezing, the corners of his eyes moistening.

On the note was just one line.

"Dad, Mom, I’m sorry, I can’t make it back home..." (To be continued. If you like this work, you are welcome to come to Qidian (qidian.com) to cast your recommendation votes and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
