Chapter 684 - 28: Phantom Virus

Chapter 684: Chapter 28: Phantom Virus

After killing a newbie, the ’Phantom Virus’, with its arm holding a sharp dinner knife, transformed back into a red ethereal shadow and retreated back into the wall.

The electromagnetic bullet hit the wall, and debris flew in all directions. Just as everyone desperately fired at it, a red shadow suddenly burst out from the wall next to a Japanese man and solidified in mid-air, wielding the dinner knife, stabbing towards his head.

The targeted Japanese man reacted swiftly, violently retreated, but only a step, his struggle for survival reached its end.

The Phantom Virus was extremely fast. With a flick of its right hand, it threw the dinner knife. The silver knife traced a beam of silver light and violently penetrated the unfortunate man’s forehead, the force of the thrust even tilting his body backwards.

The newbies aimed their muzzles and fired at the Phantom Virus again, but this time it didn’t dodge. It was as if it was coming out of the wall out of thin air, first a red shadow seeped out, then it solidified into a pair of legs.

The electromagnetic bullet hit the body of the Phantom Virus, making the part that got hit transparent and soft, allowing the bullet to pass through, without causing any damage.

"It’s similar to Qin Yan’s ability." As Lin Weiguo came out of the room, he saw this scene, which struck a chill in his heart. He immediately released his power - steel surged out from his wristwatch, enveloping his entire body, forming a hard armor, then he charged towards the Phantom Virus, "It’s another monster immune to long-distance attacks."

The Phantom Virus caught up with the dead man, grabbed the dinner knife, stirred it vigorously, then yanked it up, opening up his skull, and brain pulp splashed out in a mix of red and white.

The newbies retreated in a panic, wanting to keep their distance from the Phantom Virus, but this fellow kept hot on their heels, this time the unfortunate one was an engineer, whose unexercised body had no explosive strength, and further befuddled by others, he immediately fell to the last place and lost his balance.

The engineer stumbled a few steps and had barely steadied himself when he felt a pain in his neck, a lukewarm fluid splashing onto him. The dinner knife came from behind, piercing his neck, shredding the throat bone, the engineer could even see the half-blade protruding from under his jawline.

With a pull of the Phantom Virus’s hand, half of the engineer’s neck was sliced open, his head hanging loosely to one side, a torrent of blood gushes out, leaving an impressionist painting in bright red on the wall.

Lin Weiguo had arrived, and threw a punch at the Phantom Virus’s head. The latter’s body instantly turned into an ethereal state, the old soldier’s punch went through, having no effect whatsoever.

Tang Zheng rushed out of the room and saw the body of the Phantom Virus. It was a Western European man wearing a red leather jacket, long hair, expressionless, a belt around his waist studded with shiny dinner knives.

Bang, Tang Zheng pulled out the Demon Slaying Holy Flame and fired a shot. The body of the Phantom Virus was torn to pieces, but the next moment it recovered again.

"Not a spirit type monster?" Even with the advanced technology in Future City, it’s not possible to create such a monster, is it? Tang Zheng felt that there was something wrong with this somewhat peaceful scene, but he couldn’t figure out what.

Ruan Feifei repeatedly flicked her fingers, sending out streaks of blue electric arcs. She aimed at the body of the Phantom Virus which seemed to injure it. The monster finally let out a grim wail, but its counterattack was even fiercer. Its hands reached to its waist and emerged holding eight dinner knives, all shot out like powerful crossbow arrows.

Tang Zheng dodged the dinner knife, but the newbies didn’t have the same agility. They were scratched and injured, but luckily, no vital parts were hit, and they could still hold on to escape.

Pop! Pop! Ruan Feifei continued to release electrical shocks in an attempt to strangle it. The Phantom Virus’s body was shattered again, but it quickly condensed back together.

Clenching his fist covered in the Mechanical Lion Roar Cannon, Tang Zheng mustered all his strength, took a step forward and pounded it on the face of the Phantom Virus. Seemingly unable to turn ethereal after being electrocuted, it took the hit directly. Blood and broken teeth splattered as it twirled and heavily crashed into the wall.

Clank, Tang Zheng drew out his Snow Replacement Circle, took a step forward, and stabbed at its heart. The blood spurted out, then he delivered a kick to its forehead, trying to knock it out.

The Phantom Virus glared fiercely at Tang Zheng, its body turned ethereal and retreated back into the wall, making his next round of attacks fall short.

"What is this thing?" Sensing the smell of blood in the air, the newbies were filled with fear and uneasiness. Their faces were pale, and the sight of the three corpses was a sharp stab to their eyes.

"Mission failed, retreat!" Tang Zheng saw that the leader’s icon was still blinking, but he no longer had the mind to find him. Hearing the command, the newbies felt as if a great burden had been lifted, they rushed towards the building, everyone wanted to get away from there.

Running in the lead was a short Japanese man, just as he turned around the corner of the staircase, a red arm suddenly stretched out from the wall, holding a dinner knife, and stabbed towards his eye socket.

The Japanese man was too fast, he instinctively dodged a little, but was not successful. The dinner knife harshly stabbed into his eye socket.

The newbies heard a heart-wrenching scream, then saw the Japanese man’s eyeball being gouged out. They were so frightened they all stopped in their tracks, even forgetting to counter-attack.

The unfortunate man covered his eye and lay on the ground wailing. The Phantom Virus didn’t kill him, instead it used this cruel scene to strike fear into the survivors, to destroy their nerves and willpower.

"What are you dawdling for, run, there’s no saving that one." Tang Zheng didn’t hesitate at all, he ran past the newbies. The Japanese man with a missing eyeball could still be saved with Mechanical Nanoinjection Liquid, but why should Tang Zheng save him?

"Don’t leave me behind!" The Japanese man, his hands covered in blood, called out to his compatriots, but everyone diverted their gaze. Everyone was struggling to survive, who had the spare energy to save others?

"I don’t want to die!" A tearful Japanese man, abandoned and overcome by despair and fury, watched leg after leg stride over him and disappear around another corner. He clawed at the ground, desperate to survive.

In the hallway, six black spheres with a radius of one meter appeared. Once the electric arcs vanished, they revealed six black-clad special agents. These figures looked exactly like the Agent Smiths that Tang Zheng had killed - they were clones!

"Help me!" The unlucky man, hearing footsteps approaching, rekindled hope only to have a black handgun pointed squarely at his forehead as he turned around.

"No!" Before the man’s words could fully escape his lips, a bullet blasted from the muzzle of the special agent’s gun.

His head burst like a rotten watermelon; chunks of flesh and brain matter splattered everywhere.

The special agent glanced at the hem of his pants and calmly stepped over the corpse, continuing his pursuit of the survivors.

"Wait, wait for me!" Office worker Tang Bo was running out of breath. She wanted to lean against the wall for a quick rest but the thought of the elusive enemy immediately dispelled that idea.

"Hurry up!" Tang Zheng came to a halt and naturally the other rookies didn’t dare to move ahead either - they anxiously huddled around him, waiting for him to lead the way.

Tang Zheng, armed and alert, even started making his way back to help Tang Bo. The Japanese rookies thought he was doing this out of kindness, little did they know his intention was to use Tang Bo as bait to attract and kill the hidden enemy. It was simply too dangerous otherwise.

"Three birds, one stone. How cunning!" Ruan Fei Fei sneered as she saw the Japanese growing more and more trusting of Tang Zheng. Their time would come.

Just as Tang Bo was preparing to express her gratitude, the body of the Phantom Virus shot out from the wall and lunged at her.

Tang Zheng reacted quickly and blasted it away with a thunderball, dispersing its form. Unfortunately, it was a step too late and it managed to escape.

The moment Tang Zheng caught her, Tang Bo leaned against him, exhausted. She didn’t even care that her chest was pressing against his arm; she needed to rest.

"Run, what are you waiting for!" Tang Zheng effortlessly threw her on his back and started running. The rookies didn’t protest due to fear.

As she lay on Tang Zheng’s back, feeling the warmth radiating from him, Tang Bo felt a sense of security. She wanted to take a comfortable nap but bullets whizzed by them, bringing along sharp pangs of pain in her body.

Turning around, she saw a black-clad special agent appearing around a corner, aiming and shooting. A rotating bullet started to loom larger in her vision.

The bullet hit before Tang Bo could even react. Her head exploded messily, splattering pieces of skull around. Striking against the wall, the fragments fell back to the ground.

The screech of bullets from behind startled the survivors. Glancing back, they saw the decapitated woman lying on Tang Zheng’s bloodied shoulder. Her pale spine and throat were visible, inducing a wave of nausea.

"Tang Zheng!" Seeing Tang Zheng’s head covered in a mix of red and white, the old soldier was shocked and started firing at the special agent.

A bullet went off, and Tang Zheng felt a hot sensation on his head. Turning around, he saw Tang Bo’s headless neck resting on his shoulder, gushing blood. Even with all his experience in survival games, this sight sent chills down his spine. Still, he reacted quickly, firing back at the enemy while tossing off the corpse on his back.

After a gunshot, a special agent’s head exploded, mechanical parts scattering in every direction. The remaining agents weren’t as easy to deal with. They stopped with their reckless charge and instead began to use tactics. Six hand grenades, their pins pulled, were thrown into the mix.

The rookies’ faces whitened as they started to run for their lives. Cunning Pang Meiqin stayed in the middle of the pack, causing another Japanese man to meet a tragic end.

The Phantom Virus suddenly burst out from the wall. With a swift swipe of its knife, it first pierced an eyeball and then, as it dashed past, slit the man’s throat.

The Japanese man, eyes wide with disbelief, staggered for a moment before collapsing to the ground. The blood gushing from him made the surroundings muddy.

Ruan Fei Fei released an electric shock as the old soldier, without any hesitation, led the charge out. They couldn’t let themselves be cornered here; the situation would become dire.

A shot from the Mechanical Lion Roar Cannon blew a sizeable hole in the stairwell. The black-clad special agent evaporated. Tang Zheng sighed in relief upon seeing they were just regular agents; if not, he would have deployed Armed Hellfire and rushed out with the old soldier.

The rookies stranded in the stairwell, however, felt as though they were in doomsday, almost driven insane by fear!
