Chapter 664: Chapter 11: Robot Policeman
The Silver Trojan showed a measure of adaptability this time, displaying mission requirements written in Japanese on the radar of the Japanese team. However, this proved to be unnecessary for Tang Zheng and his team which only seemed to complicate matters. Truly, the Trojan loved causing them trouble.
Upon seeing the Japanese team cautiously holding their guns while packing up to speedily depart, Zhuo Lie seethed with anger. Crouching, he sprung forward like a hunting tiger and approached a Japanese man holding a Benelli M4.
The Japanese man’s expression stiffened. With one hand, he pulled back the weapon’s tactical handguard, loading a bullet into the chamber. He aimed his gun directly at Zhuo Lie. The others hastily followed suit. Everyone was keenly aware that only the weapon in their hands could give them a sense of security.
"Die!" cried Zhuo Lie in a fit of rage. In an attempt to establish his dominance, he did not evade the bullet but slapped the Japanese man directly across his face. The man stumbled back, spitting out a mix of blood and teeth, spinning away like a top.
The shotgun blast hit Zhuo Lie, but it utterly failed to pierce the S-grade Firefly protective suit he was wearing. This sight solidified the plans of the rest of the Japanese team to open fire. Especially since Old Zhou and Old Li had their heavy fire weapons locked onto them and ready to shoot at any moment.
"You have to move with me, or else you’ll die!" Zhuo Lie roared in Japanese, but the Japanese tourists maintained calm silence.
"Reckless fool!" Lu Fan sneered disdainfully. After this display, the Japanese would certainly not listen to Zhuo Lie. As expected, a moustached Japanese man stepped forward and made his way towards Tang Zheng.
"Pardon us, we request permission to operate independently. If that’s not possible, we would like to join your team!" The Japanese man with the mustache stood three steps in front of Tang Zheng, first bowing in respect and then expressing his intentions. If he didn’t have an option to work independently, he’d prefer to join someone who seemed kind!
The newbies suddenly realized. That’s why Tang Zheng hadn’t made any arrangements for them. He’d anticipated the Japanese team wanting to leave. After all, they were all countrymen – it was natural to be more comfortable with each other in a strange place. Compare this to Zhuo Lie, who was yelling at the Japanese, he definitely fell short. If he couldn’t even understand this much, how was he going to lead everyone?
Zhuo Lie was beyond maddened by the words of the moustached Japanese man. This was nothing less than a questioning of his capabilities! It was a disgrace! To make matters worse, the newbies gave him scornful looks, fueling the anger in this Conqueror, who had survived more than ten stages. He was on the verge of exploding in rage.
"No need. You can form your own team. The target is the boy shown on your map. Is that okay?" Tang Zheng declined in Japanese, quickly winning the favor of the Japanese team.
"But sir..." Little Mustache glanced towards Zhuo Lie. His combat power scared him.
"If we split into four teams, that’s the limit. We can’t bite off more than we can chew. Zhuo Lie, do you have any objections?" Tang Zheng shot Zhuo Lie a seemingly casual look, but Zhuo Lie knew well that even hinting at an objection would attract immediate retaliation.
"No!" Zhuo Lie spit out in a huff, leaving without so much as a goodbye, taking the boys and Old Zhou and Old Li with him. He’d suffered enough humiliation.
"Alright, let’s get moving!" Tang Zheng waved his hand at Dantai, "Be careful."
Lu Fan summoned his Spider Mount. He waved at the little girl of the young woman, inviting her to come up. However, the terrifying appearance of the spider caused the little girl to start crying, clutching tightly onto her mother’s leg while the rest of the newbies had goosebumps.
The spider’s eight eyes glowed red, its fierce jaws clicked open and closed, emitting a low hissing sound.
Tang Zheng took out his Beetle Chariot card – a loot from the second stage – and inserted it into his wristwatch for use. In a flash of black light, a versatile six-legged war chariot appeared on the ground. Apart from a laser cannon, a rotating turret, and two coaxial machine guns on top, there were also two hundred rocket shells loaded into the rocket nest at the rear.
Thanks to the six wheeled support legs under the hull, the Beetle Chariot was extremely maneuverable. In addition to walking, it could also slide at high speed, jump, and even use the launched suction rope with a hook to climb between vertical skyscrapers.
"It only seats three people, too few!" The chariot’s operating system could be completely controlled through his wristwatch. Tang Zheng was very content with it. After looking at the newbies, he let the young woman and her daughter board, followed by Li Xinlan. Although she was entitled to join as well, she declined. The rest would have to proceed on foot.
The Japanese people didn’t mind much and started changing into their defense clothes from boxes. Some Japanese women wore particularly revealing underwear which left the three juvenile boys shamelessly whistling.
"Stop staring, let’s move. We need to find some means of transport first!" Tang Zheng glanced at the green dots on his radar, then at the darkening sky, deciding to head directly to the city center without sending out scouts.
Not in a rush, the Japanese people waited until all three Chinese teams had left before beginning to discuss their plans. But not two minutes into their discussion, a robotic patrol policeman came by, emitting a chilling electronic voice that inquired about their reason for being at the harbor.
"Unit 13275 on duty, suspicious individuals detected. Provide your identification code and the purpose of being at the pier, repeat!"
It was a robot, about a meter high, painted in blue and green, and moved around on wheels. It had three walnut-sized electronic eyes on its front, flashing red lights, and was continuously scanning the faces of the Japanese group.
The Japanese people looked bewildered and didn’t know how to respond when suddenly the robot’s speaker started emitting an alarm. The sound of sirens echoed throughout the pier.
"Number 13275, according to the database check, you are illegal immigrants. Please put down your weapons and proceed to the police station for interrogation!"
The robot repeated its warning three times, then cautioned them, "Don’t attempt to resist, the first patrol team is en-route for assistance!"
Two small holes opened on the cylinder body of 13275, from which two mechanical arms extended; the red spots of infrared sights fell on two Japanese people’s foreheads.
"Please do not resist; otherwise, we will be forced to shoot!"
The Japanese were already living under the radar; they wouldn’t dare to wait for the police to come, especially the cowards. One Japanese woman, looking terrified, retreated several steps, which got 13275’s attention immediately, it moved the mechanized arm aiming at her.
Upon seeing the red spot slide past her chest and land on her forehead, the Japanese woman was scared out of her wits, screamed and turned to run.
"Warning, the suspicious subject is potentially hostile. We advise shooting to deter others!" Following 13275’s broadcast, the mechanical arm suddenly opened fire. In the burst of muzzle flames, bullets with red flashes fired into the Japanese woman’s back.
The gun roared, and blood splattered. Before the Japanese could react, one of their compatriots was shot by the robot, her body torn into two pieces, her viscera spilling out onto the ground.
A few quickest-reacting men were horrified and furious, immediately squeezed the trigger and shot at the robot. Bullets thunked against the iron shell, sparks flying, but these patrol robots, designed for simple duties, did not have top-tier defense. In less than five seconds, it was destroyed by the barrage of bullets.
"Go!" Mustache had already heard the sharp sound of sirens approaching. He hurriedly called his compatriots to leave the pier.
It was only after walking five blocks that they finally saw the skyline of the city. Tang Zheng ensured. The bug was handed away, and the little Lolita was no exception. He didn’t want to draw attention.
This was a future city, filled with dizzying technology everywhere. Skyscrapers stood on every side, flying vehicles shuttle endlessly between buildings, presenting a prosperous picture. Countless 3D projection virtual screens displayed various advertisements. Light was scattering around the city under the dusk.
There were not many humans nearby, and those present were dressed shabbily, seemingly the lower-class citizens of the city. After glancing at the group led by Tang Zheng, they resumed their hurried pace, clearly struggling for life.
Tang Zheng checked the map for their location; the three trendy youngsters couldn’t settle down. Brandishing their weapons, they walked towards an automated vending machine by the street.
"This game is amazing; it’s so realistic!" One blond youngster peered underneath the machine for any dropped coins. Finding none, he cursed and kicked the machine.
"What? We have guns, what can’t we get? Watch this!" Another trendy youngster cocked his gun happily, aimed at the vending machine, and fired. With two shots, the glass was broken.
"Haha, success!" Blondie grabbed some food from the battered vending machine; he tossed some to his friends and cared little for the others.
"Let’s get out of here!" Tang Zheng was planning to observe the city’s security and use the three troublemakers to draw away the nearby police. If possible, he even wanted to steal a police car for transportation. After all, he had taken too many newbies with him, affecting their mobility. It would be better to let them stay in a safe place he finds. In the meantime, he would take a few strong teammates to protect the mission target.
"They’re leaving!" One of the blondies noticed Tang Zheng and others leaving, elbowed his best friend in the ribs, looking worried.
"Good riddance! No one to boss us around; we can do whatever we want now." A young man with an earring, drinking milk through a straw, laughed as he looked at the future city in the distance, "I’ve never played this kind of game before. We must be dreaming. Like, Inception kind of feeling."
"Bullshit, what do we have that’s worth stealing?" Another examined his rifle, shaking his head, "No, it’s not right. Could someone be planting false memories in us? Could it be dangerous?"
"Who cares! See that girl over there? Let’s have some fun, and rob some money. It’s just a dream, so it’s not a crime!" Tossing away an empty milk carton, the young men got up and walked towards a young woman across the street.
The woman was wearing a T-shirt and tight-fitting Capri pants, exposing her dusty ankles. She wore open-toed high heels and was rushing anxiously. She hadn’t noticed the three youngsters blocking her path.
