Chapter 605: Chapter 9: 31 Newbies

Seeing Tu Jinxin’s miserable state, Tang Zheng couldn’t help but laugh. He hadn’t expected him to also be unlucky enough to get into the Trojan Room. It seemed like he had discovered a prostitute stealing his money while engaged in the act and was stabbed to death in the resulting dispute.

"Hey, it’s you? Where am I? I should be in a motel..." Tu Jinxin glanced at the prisoners, unable to continue speaking. He attempted to move toward the armed police for protection, but after taking a few steps, the chilling stares from the prisoners made him reconsider. Moving toward them would only serve to confirm that he was on their side. The swimming team champion quickly put on a pleading smile, edging closer to Tang Zheng.

"Good to see you again. I guess we wouldn’t have met if not for that fight," said Tu Jinxin, putting aside his previous arrogance from his swimming team days, trying to build a friendly relationship with Tang Zheng with a grin.

"Stay put," Tang Zheng glanced at him, focusing his attention on the white light. Someone was teleporting in again.

Tu Jixin’s expression tightened. He touched his slightly aching arm while restraining his anger. He had a bad feeling about the situation and decided to watch for now. Moreover, he wasn’t stupid - if Zheng dared to stand against the prisoners, he must have something to rely on.

The first to enter was Bai Guo, followed by a 22-year-old woman in worn-out jeans and a down jacket. She was so ordinary that she could be easily overlooked. Most people dismissed her after a single glance.

Tang Zheng didn’t look away. This woman’s face bore traces of exposure to harsh wind and sand, her hands were frostbitten red, and she held a worn-out pen. It seemed she had been up all night grading papers - her eyes were dry and bloodshot.

The other newcomer was a frail-looking high school student who scanned the room of people with an air of indifference, paying particular attention to his left wrist.

"A stupid fuck who tried to kill himself by slashing his wrist," sneered Liu Hong, the scar-faced man. They all feared dying too soon, yet there were always these damned kids who thought life was too long.

The high school student was clenching a box cutter in his right hand. Fresh blood was dripping from it.

"This batch of newcomers seems decent?" thought Lin Weiguo as he scanned the room full of prisoners and armed police. He hoped that fewer of them would die this time.

"Ha, that also means they won’t be very obedient," Dantai’s voice echoed through the room, completely disregarding the others.

The prisoners were silent. Even a twenty-something man among them didn’t make a fuss. It was apparent that the years of imprisonment had taught them a lot, at least the value of patience.

"As the saying goes, a barking dog seldom bites. They all must be tough guys," Dantai said with a smile, his eyes darting among the prisoners who were armed.

"Who are you?" asked the captain of the armed police. Being on the weaker side, he wanted to seek help. The people around Tang Zheng appeared harmless, but their guns were intimidating. Common people normally didn’t have such things. However, it might still be worth investigating.

"That tall one is Li Yulong, a gang leader, the boss of the underworld. More than seven or eight people died by his hand over a decade ago."

"Then why wasn’t he executed?" retorted Xu Biyun. The captain of the armed police was left unable to respond. How could he elucidate these dark secrets?

"The scar-faced man, Liu Hong, works for a living. He wasn’t satisfied with his boss’s wages, so he broke into his boss’s house in the middle of the night and raped his wife. He slaughtered the family of three and fled. He wasn’t sentenced to death because during his imprisonment, he performed meritorious deeds and had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment," the captain diverted the topic.

"Hey, are you going to disclose all our pasts?" A short man with a sturdy build glared at the captain, gripping his submachine gun tighter.

"Wang Tao, a border smuggler, he deals in anything that makes money. Although there is no evidence, more than dozens of deaths are alleged to be his doing," the captain spoke fearlessly amidst the dire situation. It couldn’t get any worse. He might as well take a gamble and definitively establish his moral stance.

"Stop introducing, it’s useless. Every single person who gets into the Trojan Room has died once, can’t you see the pattern?" Pang Meiqin waved her hand, interrupting him. "The only thing you need to do now is listen to Tang Zheng, survive, get out of here, and start a new life."

The newcomers instantly burst into a commotion, staring at Pang Meiqin in confusion. The armed police frowned, and the prisoners couldn’t hide their excitement, barely containing their joy.

"Does that... apply to us too?" A glasses-wearing prisoner pushed up his spectacles as his voice trembled.

"Yes, it does. The trojan will help you handle everything. You can start all over again from scratch." Pang Meiqin boasted confidently, although she doubted she would have done so if she encountered these fierce criminals a few months ago. Who wouldn’t give a wide berth to people who were clearly mentally ill?

"You, comrade, need to watch your words and your position," warned the police captain, not agreeing with Pang Meiqin’s words.

"Wait until you survive and come back. Then you can talk to me like that," Pang Meiqin enjoyed this feeling of superiority.

"Haha, I get it now! It’s a survival game hosted by the Main God, right? We need to survive there, earn points, right? And the equipment you are wearing now is what you gained there, isn’t it? Finally, after 17 years of neglect, I’ve finally won the favor of God." The high school student who tried to kill himself suddenly erupted in manic laughter. He flung himself in front of the black cube, "You must be the game administrator, right? Give me a weapon quickly. I want to kill the monster, earn experience and gold coins."

This crazy high school student scared the newcomers. Frankly speaking, even the convicts didn’t want to deal with this type of person. After all, who wouldn’t avoid the mentally ill if they could?

The white light lit up again; the teleportation continued. Chen Hong, the miserable Xu Liangmao, and the female TV host Ruan Feifei entered. Seeing so many men, Chen Hong was scared and stuck close to Tang Zheng. However, she became annoyed when she saw that no one paid her any attention - she was a celebrity, after all.

Ruan Feifei learned her lesson and quietly stood behind Tang Zheng, not uttering a single word.

"45 survivors, not an easy challenge," the old soldier commented as three more elders teleported in, making him sigh in pity. These three were undoubtedly destined to die.

The newbies were still at a loss, cautiously guarded. Suddenly, the black cube in the middle of the room lit up, transformed into a semi-transparent state and floated mid-air. It began playing a rock version of the International Song, its deafening sound echoed around, the six-screen display flickering with the images of the current survivors.

"Toys, amuse me with your insignificant lives and sweet blood!"

"It’s here, the Administrator is here." The high school student stared at the cube with religious fervor, almost ready to bow in worship.

"Ha, it’s not often I get to see a toy who enjoys the Trojan World. Kid, I admire you." The Silver Trojan greeted the high school student with a cheerful tone, "But, unfortunately, there are no additional rewards."

"Who are you?" the captain of the armed police questioned the Silver Trojan thinking it was some communication device. "Why have you trapped us?"

"Idiot," the Silver Trojan gave a brief comment and ignored him. "In five minutes, the Survival Challenge Game will begin. Due to the high level of difficulty, you will have three initial pieces of equipment, protective clothing, a cold weapon, firearms, and ten ammo clips."

During the cruel countdown, the floor cracked open with a creak. Two rows of a meter-tall cross-shaped hollow steel frames rose, filled with weapons and ammo clips, and also silver metal boxes prepared for the newbies.

The high school student burst out laughing. His left hand grabbed a box, and his right hand reached for firearms and ammo clips.

"Stop, none of you move, don’t touch the weapons!" The captain of the armed police yelled and then advised earnestly, "You are committing a crime. Stop now, it’s not too late."

Li Yulong was uncertain, intending to stop the newbies from taking the weapons. Given his status, he was a noticeable target, likely to be ganged up against. But seeing the expressions on Tang Zheng and the others, he dared not shout out.

Bang, a bullet hit close to the feet of the high school student. It was the anti-drug policeman.

"All of you stand aside, no one is allowed to pick up the firearms." The anti-drug policeman, a burly man in his thirties with an authoritative demeanor, was quite intimidating. The newbies who were originally heading towards the weapons rack immediately halted, unsure of what to do next.

"Please note, you have four minutes to pick your equipment." The countdown by the Trojan didn’t stop.

The high school student stiffened for a moment. After all, the law enforcement badge hung around the policeman’s neck was quite intimidating; the state’s violent agency was not a meek entity.

"You foolish thing, there’s absolutely no need to worry. In the Trojan Game, everyone is equal." The Trojan encouraged the high school student, curious to witness the extent of his madness.

"You..." the anti-drug policeman was furious and ready to shoot him.

"Haha, gentleman, you’re correct. What we want is equality." After Li Yulong finished speaking, he signaled his prison buddies and then looked towards Tang Zheng. "What do you say, young man?"

"Everyone go take the weapons, put on the protective clothing and wait to be teleported. You only have three minutes left." Tang Zheng directed his gaze towards the anti-narcotics policeman, "If you want to go back alive and see your wife and children again, do as the Trojan says. Here, the law of the jungle prevails."

The face of the anti-drug policeman changed unpredictably. Watching the newbies rushing to the weapons rack in a hurry made him uncomfortable with the rapid change of status.

Li Zhixin straddled a rifle on his back, picked some ammo clips, and grabbed a machete. He swang it around twice before swapping it for a samurai sword.

The prisoners tried to carry multiple guns and ammo clips for backup, but ended up getting electrocuted and collapsed on the floor.

"Those who have taken the items move aside, don’t hinder others. Also, taking more than your share will lead to an electric shock." Tang Zheng looked at the three bewildered Italian beauties standing at the side and translated his instructions into Italian. Only then did they squeeze into the crowd.

Since Bai Guo was revived and his record erased, he could take a new set of initial equipment. Lin Weiguo cleared space for him, calling over a puzzled ordinary woman, "Hurry, there is not much time."

"Trojan, what’s the mission this time?" Despite the large number of people, many of them were men. Although they were prisoners, they could still contribute as a fighting force. But those with particularly bad characters needed to be eliminated quickly.

"Blackened Journey to the West, Tang Monk and his apprentices have stolen Buddha’s True Scripture. You must retrieve it." The Trojan let out a sinister laugh, clearly looking forward to their deaths.

"Damn it, another spirit-type game." Chu Baichuan groaned, and hurriedly stocked up on supplies. (To be continued. If you like this work, please come to qidian.com to vote for recommendation and monthly tickets. Your support is my biggest motivation.)
