Chapter 575: Chapter 45 Another Death
From the number of poisoned arrows shot out and the frantic footsteps of the monster’s wild rush, Tang Zheng immediately deduced that the enemy’s numbers were considerable. He moved Aima behind him to protect her and stood his ground, dual-wielding Terminators.
Without Tang Zheng’s reminder, Qin Yan, Dantai, and the old soldier had already rushed forward, protecting Aima from all sides.
His right hand swept over the space wristwatch, pulling out a Terminator. At the same time, his left hand flipped over to retrieve another. He then aimed at the oasis on both sides of the path.
As a dual-wielding firearm of the giant zombie, Gatling Special was entirely compatible with artificial mechanics, and its use with a single hand posed no issue at all.
The monsters’ rush was extraordinarily fast. Before Tang Zheng could warn the others to form a defensive formation, they had already unhesitatingly rushed out with curved knives in hand.
The Gatling spun, thundering. Six tongues of flame shot out like long spears, instantly hitting the dozen monsters in the front, mowing them down into bloody messes.
The Conquerors started to fight back. Gunshots echoed as they harvested the lives of the monsters en masse. In a dozen seconds, their surroundings were strewn with bloody corpses. Blood had even dyed nearby plants red. Yet, the monsters, undeterred, continued their suicidal charge.
Ten-some tourists, who had got past the poison arrows in the crowd, could not avoid the monsters. After only a few steps, they were caught, slashed by the monsters’ curved knives, and then fell to the ground. The monsters’ attacks were ferocious, with severed limbs flying across their field of vision.
Ignoring the nearby battlefield, they dragged their spoils into the oasis with one hand. Some tourists struggled too fiercely, so the monsters turned around and cut off their heads with a curved knife. Blood gushed from their severed necks.
The situation was still under control, and the newbies barely relaxed. However, an unexpected change occurred. The nearby oasis seemed to be expanding wildly as if it were consuming the blood, quickly engulfing the path and everyone, including Tang Zheng.
No sooner had the monsters retreated like a tide than the survivors could draw a breath, when a flurry of poison darts shot out. The survivors had to protect their heads, but it seemed that the monsters were waiting for them to do so. They then shot out a series of foot-long, snake-shaped crossbow arrows, which aimed at them like striking snakes.
The survivors were in total confusion. They could hardly locate the target in the dense oasis and could only blindly fire at the plants. But the barrage of crossbow arrows didn’t stop, leaving them powerless to turn the tables.
"Run, break through the oasis, and protect Aima," Tang Zheng shouted. Then, he took out a piece of iron as a shield and was the first to sprint deep into the oasis. The survivors had no way out.
Nobody had the time to take care of Chen Jiarong, who had been hit by anaesthetic darts. So, he was left behind. Ten-some minutes after the survivors had left, over a dozen monsters had leapt out and grabbed his ankles, dragging him into the forest.
"Please, save him," Cai Nan and Shan Shan pleaded to Tang Zheng, whether sincerely or feigned. However, they also knew that there was little hope, as even they were barely hanging on.
Upon hearing this, Chen Jiarong, who had already relinquished all hope, summoned a strong will to live. Unfortunately, his body was immobilised from the anaesthetic dart, and he could do nothing but wait for death, pinning any hope he had on others.
"Do you think I have leisure time right now?" Tang Zheng fired at the direction where crossbow arrows came from with one hand holding Gatling. However, the effect was minuscule. He couldn’t help it. The number of monsters was simply overwhelming, and they were all well-hidden.
"Lu Fan, take out those monsters dragging Chen Jiarong," commanded Tang Zheng.
Hearing Tang Zhen’s order, the little Lolita was baffled. But she did as told.
Cai Nan and Shan Shan, assuming Tang Zheng had a change of heart, quickly thanked him. But the next second, something happened that turned their faces pale.
Upon hearing Tang Zheng’s words, Chen Jiarong despaired, resenting him so much that he wished he could curse him. However, upon seeing him instruct Lu Fan to kill the monsters around him, he berated himself for being narrow-minded and blaming others wrongly. Thankfully, his throat had numbed, leaving him speechless. If he had cursed Tang Zheng, he would not have saved him, and he would be at a disadvantage now.
Thwarted continuously from dragging Chen Jiarong away, the monsters retreated in fury, dashed directly to him, and severed his head with a swift strike of the knife.
Thinking he could survive, Chen Jiarong was frozen in horror. He watched helplessly as the curved blade battered down. After feeling a sharp pain in his neck, his head began to roll, and he could even see his own blood squirting out. With the arrival of death, his path to survival came to a halt.
"So that’s how it is." Lu Fan understood. She realized that Tang Zheng was worried that if the monsters dragged away the anaesthetised Chen Jiarong and did something unknown - such as turning him into a monster - it would cause trouble. Therefore, even if a newbie was inevitably going to die, they had to do so right before their eyes.
"Our group leader Tang is so cunning," Dantai guessed Tang Zheng’s intention. If he intended to save someone, he would, of course, snatch the person back. Killing a few monsters did not help at all, especially since they would have to leave sooner or later.
As for Qin Yan and the old soldier, they simply wouldn’t question any of Tang Zheng’s decisions. The rest of the group was in a dire situation, their minds in a state of panic. There was no way they could pay attention to these subtleties.
In short, Tang Zheng was again labeled as a good person. Everyone just assumed Chen Jiarong was unlucky. After all, he was the one who didn’t listen to Tang Zheng’s advice to choose protective clothing in the room in the first place.
The last thought Chen Jiarong had before his death was that if he had believed in Tang Zheng earlier, he would have definitely lived longer. It’s so hard to find a good group leader.
"Wife!" Ai Yixin tripped trying to dodge the crossbow arrows and fell, causing Chu Baichuan to break out in a cold sweat. He picked a bullet, and without saving energy, detonated it in the direction where the arrows came from. A fire dragon roared, consuming the nearby vegetation.
"I’m alright." Beads of sweat covered Ai Yixin’s forehead. Without the protective clothing, this level of running and stress could have caused her to miscarry.
"Don’t tell me you’re alright, your lips are turning white, and I’ll carry you." Chu Baichuan glanced at his wife’s belly, five months into pregnancy, and was annoyed because there was nothing he could do. He didn’t even know how to calculate the duration of pregnancy as the time in the game wasn’t the same as in reality.
"When we get back, I don’t care what Yixin says, we have to abort." Thinking about their unborn baby brought a needle-like pain to Chu Baichuan’s heart, he almost suffocated. But to spare his wife the suffering, he decided to have their baby aborted no matter what.
"What nonsense are you talking about? How are you supposed to fight if you’re carrying me? I can run." Ai Yixin didn’t want to be a burden. She pushed Chu Baichuan away and ran with gritted teeth. Because of the delay, they were already five meters behind the others.
The creatures noticed someone falling behind and came forward, wielding their curved knives and firing more crossbow and poison arrows.
The Old Soldier and Qin Yan, inherently kind, pointed their guns back and killed those monsters, providing Ai Yixin with a chance to escape.
Ai Yixin’s eyes moistened as she noticed that, although Tang Zheng didn’t stop, he summoned his velociraptor mount and left it behind. Clearly, it was for her to use.
"Ride the dragon, watch out for the arrows", Tang Zheng called out and continued his effort to break free. He didn’t use the ride himself, as it was a large target and easily the focus of attacks.
But Ai Yixin wasn’t able to worry about that. Her energy was draining rapidly and she knew she couldn’t keep going without riding.
"Damn! Looks like improving agility was a poor choice, endurance would be the top priority", Ai Yixin said regretfully as she held the reins and stayed low on the mount.
Tang Zheng tried to retrieve a few vehicles from his space wristwatch, but failed. Little Lolita summoned a Hummer, but the thickly grown trees in the Oasis made it difficult to navigate.
After five minutes of high-speed advancement, the newbies were all gasping for breath, fatigue beginning to take over. Even Aima had to get on the velociraptor. She breathed heavily, as though her lungs were about to burst. As an ordinary person, the run was so demanding that she thought she’d die of exhaustion.
The Conquerors may not have been tired, but they were also panting heavily. The sight of the distressed newbies brought them some sense of pride. But when they looked at Tang Zheng, they laughed helplessly. Despite charging ahead while carrying a Gatling gun and a piece of iron that weighed fifty pounds, his breath hadn’t changed - calm and steady, it was incredible.
"You’re not telling me you still have some reserves left, are you?" Chu Baichuan supported himself on his knees and took advantage of this break to take in deep breaths and recover. The monsters might have been left behind, but who knew what danger could still arise.
"Of course, if I hadn’t been waiting for you guys, I would’ve been long gone", Lu Fan said wiping the sweat off his forehead while taking in large breaths.
Everyone was impressed by Lu Fan’s performance. The little lolita who always played nice turned out to be stronger than Pang Meiqin and Xu Biyun.
Further exchange was interrupted. Although the survivors managed to lose the blow-dart monsters, the long-not-seen mummy corpses appeared again, marching from the front. Nothing could hide from the ’eyes’ of the queen near the Abydos Temple. And the queen didn’t want these desecrators to leave the oasis alive, so she sent mummy corpses to slow down the Trojan Squad while sending out her elite fighters.
These dried corpses were undoubtedly more difficult to deal with than blow-dart monsters. They could resist a lot of attacks. Regular bullets would hit them and only knock off some fragments, not fatal at all.
"At least five hundred of them!" Pang Meiqin cried out, cursing her impotence. She looked at the others releasing their abilities and felt a mix of envy, jealousy and resentment.
However, as a Conqueror about to survive her eighth game, once nearly dying from getting bisected, Pang Meiqin wasn’t nervous. She was as calm as a block of ice.
Among the newbies, the useless Cai Nan and Shan Shan were already close to collapsing in terror. Hu Xiaoyan and Chen Hong were no help either. Only Xu Liangmao was still shooting, but to little avail.
The long-ranged attacker Chu Baichuan was the first to open fire. He set off rounds of ammunition in the Oasis, trying to kill the corpses from a distance as much as possible.
"Everyone, get together. I’m going to make a platform out of clay." Lu Fan pushed down with both hands and then lifted them. With a loud rumble, a mud pillar with a radius of five meters rose from under everyone’s feet, five meters high.
The horde of mummies arrived. But the survivors didn’t need to fight among the trees, as they saw the mummies gathering around the clay platform, they knew Lu Fan once again played a crucial role!
