Chapter 408: Chapter 37: Misjudgments and Red Square Shelter

The entire Kremlin complex was completely overrun with ghouls, everywhere their jumping, chasing figures could be seen. Tang Zheng and the others were like a lone boat in a violent storm, their only option was to run for their lives.

Gunfire was rampant, but it did nothing to quell them, every moment saw young soldiers lagging behind being pounced on by those particularly fast ghouls. Then, a dozen more would swarm over their prey, ripping and chewing, completely devouring the unlucky guy, even licking up the fresh blood splashed on the ground.

Thanks to them not pursuing and harassing the group continually, there was still a distance of dozen of meters between Tang Zheng’s group and the main force of the ghouls.

Thousand of ghouls were continuously roaring from their degenerated vocal cords, dropping the atmospheric pressure significantly. A sense of suffocation and oppression swept across the square, causing everyone to tremble with fear.

Dantai Zongqi tried his best to break through the direction with fewer ghouls, but counting the scattered ones, there were still more than three hundred.

"Open fire, open fire now!" Grigory roared loudly, grabbing the armored BMP-3 before leaping onto it.

The people in the war chariot had no idea how to operate a fire control system. Only three 7.62 mm machine guns were firing. Even though they managed to kill a few ghouls, the roadblock ahead was still not cleared due to the shooting angle.

The female models were panting heavily, almost driving their full strength. Were it not for their protective clothing enhancing their physical quality, they would have definitely been left behind.

Tang Zheng leapt onto the armored vehicle in a few strides, pulled open the turret hatch and jumped in. Before he could even settle down, he was already at the periscope. Ignoring the ballistics computer and the laser rangefinder, he manned the 100 mm rifled gun, firing at whatever was in his sight.

Boom! The war vehicle jolted as the cannon fired. A cloud of black smoke belched out from the cannon bore and dissipated into the air. Grigory and six adventurers who had lazily climbed onto the war vehicle were shaken, a few even losing their grip. One unfortunate guy rolled onto the rear engine area and got burned. The scavengers who managed to steady themselves weren’t so lucky, as another shell was shot out of the cannon.

Feeling the vibration of the vehicle, Grigory and the others hurriedly jumped off. They did not wish to be mistakenly injured. And yet, one young soldier was hit by the flaming hot cannon shell that was ejected from the casing window. As the searing shell tumbled into the snow, white steam hissed into the air from the melting snow.

The deafening sound of cannon fire was unbearable for the soldiers. They felt that their eardrums would rupture, but they dared not veer away from the war vehicle. Some didn’t even get a chance to cover their ears, but they kept on shooting, attacking the ghouls charging at them.

Thanks to the auto loader machine, Tang Zheng was spared from much trouble. Also, he could increase the firing speed to the maximum without worrying about wasting shells. He planned to explode an escape route in the least amount of time. Thus, he launched a firestorm onslaught with high-explosive fragmentation shells.

"Uncle, they’re charging from behind." Lu Fan sat in the commander position, using the periscope to monitor the surroundings.

Because of the continuous firing, Dantai naturally reduced the vehicle speed to the slowest. By now, they had fallen behind the infantry. The ghouls, bereft of any wisdom, crashed into the armored vehicle, their impacts constantly making banging sounds.

"Ignore those, shoot the ones coming from the sides." Tang Zheng began operating the 30mm machine gun next. All high-explosive incendiaries stored in it were particularly effective against the ghouls.

"Take the momentum and break out in one go." Dantai roared. But as they were about to break through the ghoul encirclement, a swarm of radiated giant wasps in black and yellow stripes suddenly flew towards them, nearly scaring the female models senseless.

These mutated wasps were as big as adult rhinos. Their tails were dragging bright, sparkling poison needles. Like helicopters, they buzzed their way forward, cutting off their route.

"There are at least five hundred radiation wasps. We’re done for." Grigory shouted. His face turned ashen. These creatures were tough to deal with. Not only did they shoot poison needles, but even if they did not stab you to death, a mere scratch could lead to deadly poisoning, with no cure.

Adding misery to an already pitiful situation, dozens of radiation scorpions came out to join the chaos. The size of these mutated insects was not small either, as big as a cross-country jeep, and they moved incredibly fast. Waving their pincers and stingers, they charged over with an air of arrogance.

"Run! We can’t beat them." Gao Yu roared, instructing Dantai Zongqi to sprint at full speed. As for the scavengers and the female models outside, who cared about their lives or deaths?

Upon hearing the shouting signal, the female models were infuriated, while the young soldiers had sullen expressions. Some were even angered.

"I won’t abandon them; Dantai, charge towards the church. Let’s hide there for a while." Tang Zheng was furious. He had turned the loudspeaker on to command the infantry. Gao Yu’s words would certainly be heard by them. Perhaps they would be shot by the scavengers before being killed by the ghouls.

Sure enough, hearing Tang Zheng’s words, the young soldiers calmed down considerably. If it weren’t for their breathlessness from running, they would have started cursing out loud. But there were still some dissatisfied people who fired their guns in protest.

Gao Yu was shocked, only noticing that little Lolita had made the shape of a megaphone with her lips. He immediately cursed himself as an idiot for making enemies of everyone now.

Without responding, Dantai Zongqi, looking at the situation outside, yanked the steering wheel and drove towards Our Lady of Holy Heaven Cathedral. His training was always mission oriented and required him to abandon his combat mates when necessary. Thus, he wouldn’t risk his life for some strangers. It was just that they couldn’t afford to charge through recklessly now. Those secondary flying insects were incredibly fast and had caught up.
