Chapter 1272: Chapter 26: Fairy Tale Town
At midnight, the last bit of starlight was obscured by massive clouds, and the drizzle finally began to fall, scattering on faces with a moist and chilly touch that made one shiver involuntarily.
The Warhammer Team, with over a hundred members, straggled along a narrow path, not yet having reached Fairy Tale Town. Their momentum had fallen again and again, looking so decrepit that the newbies would have already fled if they had any other choice.
Riding a Velociraptor Mount, Tang Zheng held a Night Vision Device and scanned the horizon. On both sides of the dirt road were endless wheat fields. Every few dozen meters, there was a scarecrow dressed in torn clothes and a straw hat. Unfortunately, they couldn’t scare off the crows, which squawked and hopped about on their heads.
Doctor Xie Ding, full of pent-up anger, picked up a stone and threw it at those scarecrows. The crows were startled, flapping their wings and taking off, but instead of leaving, they swooped in like bombers.
"Look what good you’ve done now?" Big Ears complained. Like a frightened bird, he raised his Gun and started Shooting, fearing the crows were monsters.
His timid Counterattack also caused a stir among the university students; a few with Firearms shot at the crows, their faces full of confusion.
The newbies had already fallen into a state of paranoia, regardless of whether the crows posed any danger, it was better to shoot them dead first.
The crows screamed as they flew above the newbies, dropping loads of bird droppings. Some unlucky ones were hit and fell down, their black feathers drifting down in the rain like little boats.
Doctor Xie Ding wiped his forehead and ended up with a handful of bird droppings, so disgusted that he almost threw up, cursing non-stop.
Bang, bang, Tang Zheng pulled out his Devil Flame Pistol and fired two shots of Storm Barrage, red bullets like fireflies swept over the heads of the newbies, killing all the crows.
Shattered corpses and blood fell on the newbies, provoking incessant screams.
"Enough, if anyone else shoots randomly, get out of the Team," Tang Zheng cursed irritably; these newbies had never been trouble-free.
"How much longer to Fairy Tale Town?" Teng Yuangxiang poked a wild cat’s belly with a dagger; she couldn’t contribute much in battle, so she had to make herself useful in other ways.
"Soon, we just have to pass through a small Tree Forest, and we’ll be at the town’s entrance," the wild cat pleaded again to be released, but Teng Little Three stuffed its mouth with a rotten cloth.
"The small town is the territory of the Ghost Bride. Even if it’s not dangerous, we shouldn’t go in. We need to lure her out and kill her," Tang Zheng wiped the rain off his face. If it weren’t for setting an example, he would have opened his Umbrella a long time ago. This light rain might not soak through clothes, but it felt uncomfortable sticking to the body.
"Who’s going to lure her out?" Li Xinlan felt closer to Tang Zheng after sharing a bed with him and took the initiative to speak.
"There are so many newbies, just pick one. That Big Ears looks pretty good, capable of handling such a big task," Dantai said mockingly, "The role of newbies is just to be Cannon Fodder. If they’re not conscious of this and don’t voluntarily take on the task, then they might as well die. Warhammer Team doesn’t need weaklings."
Dantai didn’t care if the newbies could hear him or not, his voice was so loud that it changed the faces of all the newbies.
"As the deputy group leader, I used to be too soft-spoken, always letting you do as you pleased. This has led our Team to be as disunited as Loose Sand. Starting today, I’m going to change all that," Dantai’s gaze swept over everyone. "Group Leader, it starts with you. Put away your good guy act. Trojan World follows the law of the jungle. We need to let the newbies know that if they want to survive, they have to fight for their lives."
Teng Yuangxiang sneered at the corner of her mouth, feeling that this guy was targeting her deliberately.
"It seems Dantai is fine, still the same guy looking out for the Team. Qin Yan has become even more silent, hard to judge. Bai Guo, on the other hand, is spending less time clinging to her..." Pang Meiqin observed everyone carefully but didn’t discover much. There was no way she could; she hardly interacted with the others on normal days. It was impossible to deduce anything based on character and habits.
"Okay!" Tang Zheng glanced at Dantai and agreed, wondering if he was an imposter. Dantai was always deep in thought, and any behavior from him wasn’t surprising. This was what worried him the most, for if the young man turned bad, he would definitely be a handful.
Big Ears’ lips quivered a few times, but in the end, he didn’t dare retort. He was clever enough to know that opposing would be pointless and would only anger the others. It was better to comply and ask for more benefits, like better Firearms or a Shield, and do his best to save his own life.
The Warhammer Team could now see Fairy Tale Town shrouded in the Drizzle, but their pace was getting slower, and the newbies hardly dared to breathe, for on both sides of the dirt road, there were densely packed crosses with crucified Humans. Maggots crawled on their corpses, utterly disgusting, and the black traces of congealed blood were chilling.
Standing at the entrance of the small town, one could see the straight main road, with wooden houses on both sides. A few wild cats lay on the rooftops, staring with green pupils at the unwelcome guests.
"Big Ears, go, lure out the Ghost Bride!" Dantai didn’t want to waste time and personally pulled Big Ears out. The other university students stepped back, creating a path, not intervening.
"Can I get a machine gun? And one of those translucent Shields," Big Ears swallowed hard, not daring to look directly into Dantai’s stern eyes. "Don’t worry, I’ll definitely complete the mission."
"We don’t have a Shield; I’ll give you a Gun," Dantai handed over a General-purpose machine gun to Big Ears, wrapped a bullet chain around his neck, and gave him a push.
"Can you give me some more hand grenades?" Big Ears’ legs were as soft as noodles, trembling nonstop, when push came to shove, he was still afraid. The silent small town was like a terrifying evil spirit, waiting to devour its prey.
"Stop blabbering and go!" Dantai pointed the muzzle at Big Ears, leaving no room for negotiation.
Big Ears stepped into the small town with trepidation. Suddenly, with a loud crash, an iron fence fell from the sky, blocking his retreat. Startled, he grabbed the iron gate and shook it vigorously, to no avail. His loud screams were as if stones thrown into a lake, causing no ripples.
Pat, pat, a group of figures clad in black robes approached, walking on the blue stone slabs wetted by the rain. They carried a large boat, at least ten meters long, adorned with fresh flowers. Yet, Big Ears’ gaze was entirely captured by the bride hanging from the mast.
The ghost bride still wore the low-cut short wedding dress, with ribbons wrapped around her neck, hanging from the mast, swaying in the night wind. Rainwater sprinkled on her ghastly pale skin, leaving a greasy sheen.
But Big Ears wasn’t dazzled by her beauty. He raised his machine gun and fired a barrage, shooting spiritual power bullets. Several hit the ghost bride’s body, splattering blood.
The slaves carrying the flower boat remained indifferent, chanting in unison and marching steadily forward.
Big Ears retreated to the iron gate and after emptying one ammunition box, started reloading the bullet chain. Suddenly, the flowers and grass on the ground surged up like rose vines climbing a tiger, ensnaring Big Ears’ feet and quickly climbing higher.
"I don’t want to die!" Big Ears cried, struggling desperately. But soon, he couldn’t even make a sound as one vine constricted his neck and thorns deeply embedded into his flesh.
The vines pulsed as if they were leeches, sucking Big Ears’ blood. In less than three seconds, only a skin-and-bones corpse remained.
At the entrance to the small town, the boundary line divided two worlds. The survivors could only see Big Ears standing still within the town, like a petrified statue.
"What’s with this guy? What’s he daydreaming about?" After waiting for a good twenty minutes, Big Ears remained motionless, which irked Teng Yuangxiang.
"Send in two more!" Dantai selected two more newbies, equipped them, and pushed them in. This time they managed to get twenty meters further than Big Ears but still froze.
Dantai’s face grew gloomy, dark as ink. Turning back again, the newbies simultaneously stepped back, even seasoned fighters like Zhang Chun’en and the special forces bodyguards weren’t calm, fearing they’d be picked to meet their demise.
"Stop sending people, let’s go in together," Mu Nianqi stopped Dantai, "At this rate, it’s just a senseless sacrifice."
"Wildcat, what exactly is going on with this town?" Tang Zheng grabbed the boot cat, staring at it as he questioned.
"I don’t know, no outsiders have ever come to this town before." The wildcat was on the verge of tears; it genuinely had no clue.
"Let’s go in together. With so many of us, we should be able to kill the BOSS," Song Xin couldn’t bear to watch any more newbies being sacrificed.
"Go in. Dantai, Qin Yan, Bai Guo, you’ll be the vanguard." Tang Zheng was unsure about the true intentions of these individuals, otherwise, he would have held back a reserve team. Now, they had no choice but to swarm in.
Entering the town, the iron gate shut behind them. Tang Zheng saw the three vine-wrapped corpses.
"We’ve lost half of our people!" Jing Lan suddenly shouted, alerting everyone.
"Don’t panic, hold steady, watch for the ghost bride!" Lin Fachan cursed his luck inwardly. Just his luck to run into the bride. It seemed those who had disappeared were now at ease.
The flower boat had vanished, and now the blue stone slabs in front were overrun with various brilliantly blooming flowers. An eight-meter-tall cross entwined with green vines blocked the path.
The bride’s hands were wrapped in vines, bound to the cross, while a host of purple butterflies danced around her. The drizzling rain made the sea of flowers damp and vibrant, full of life.
"Isn’t the theme this time a dark fairy tale? Who do you think her original is?" Mu Nianqi grasped her weapon, stepping on the grass beneath her.
"Sleeping Beauty, perhaps? Look at the bride’s sleeping appearance and the sea of roses before us." Song Xin recalled the fairy tales she had read, and this seemed to fit.
"It doesn’t matter who she is, attack!" Tang Zheng suddenly roared, opening fire on the ghost bride. The others, already on alert, responded immediately, and a storm of bullets whistled towards her.
Whoosh, dozen of vines in the sea of flowers abruptly surged, twisting together to form a green shield wall, protecting the bride. Bullets struck it, splashing sap everywhere.
The bride remained asleep. Some vines extended upward, wrapping around her legs, piercing through the white garter stockings into her flesh. As they sucked her blood, the entire sea of flowers came to life! (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, please visit qidian.com to vote with recommended tickets and monthly tickets.
