Chapter 1270: Chapter 24: Kill and Spoils of War
Despite suffering heavy damage, Frank did not die. Even though he lost his head and couldn’t see his enemy, his attacks remained fierce, swinging his left armature in front of him.
With a whoosh, the arm smashed onto Jiang Liming’s shoulder. Instead of knocking him away, it clung to him as Frank’s flesh stretched and invaded, attempting to devour him.
Blue electric arcs sprang from the broken neck, found the head, and like a magnet, pulled it back into place. The flesh around the wound wriggled, reconnecting itself.
"Idiot!" Mu Nianqi snorted coldly. If she wanted to seize the Spoils of War, Jiang Liming, who couldn’t burst seeds, was no match for her. Since Frank could assemble a monster from a corpse, it was clearly an undying body. If simply beheading or smashing the heart could kill him, that would be too weak.
That was the difference in experience, and Jiang Liming paid a heavy price for his cleverness.
"Get off me!" Seeing his body flow towards Frank’s like water, puffing up, Jiang Liming was terrified, screaming and punching desperately at its head to no avail.
The right arm Frank had lost was also regenerating. He pulled out the Soul Dagger from his waist and plunged it into Jiang Liming’s heart, extracting his soul.
In his beastly state, Jiang Liming turned into a zombie puppet and attacked Mu Nianqi.
"He’s not dead, keep killing!" Pang Meiqin gauged that Tang Zheng should have dealt with the Stitching Beast by now. She didn’t advance but used Hell’s Song for long-range suppression since Frank’s ability was too bizarre, and she didn’t want to be devoured.
Ruan Feifei dared not release lightning, lest she replenish the boss’s energy. This frustrated her greatly. Li Xinlan’s ice spikes fell from the sky but the boss easily dodged them. Ghost Reaper reappeared behind it, leaving a mark on its neck, but sadly couldn’t hook out the soul.
Frank stabbed the Soul Dagger into the Ghost Reaper’s body, causing heavy damage, and Jing Lan spit out a mouthful of blood as well.
Mu Nianqi sighed. The best opportunity had been lost. The team could have killed it earlier rather than being stuck in this deadlock.
"What the hell are you doing?" Mu Nianqi observed Dantai from the corner of her eye. Could someone at this level really be the group’s vice leader? And that Qin Yan, aside from being liquid, was ridiculously weak. "Wait, there’s a problem."
A flash of insight struck Mu Nianqi’s mind, causing her pupils to sharply contract. Frightened, she ceased her strong attacks on Frank and flipped through the air, distancing herself from the battlefield.
From his previous behavior, Tang Zheng was a shrewd, cautious man. How could he choose such weaklings as his right-hand man? Even if he agreed, the other team members wouldn’t follow, despite Tang Zheng’s high prestige. In the Trojan World, any team’s internal hierarchy was based on strength, not favoritism. Moreover, judging by the members’ tone, Dantai and Qin Yan weren’t weak...
"What do these discrepancies and anomalies imply? There must be something wrong within the team," Mu Nianqi reasoned as she attacked, drifting towards the castle. "Has Tang Zheng noticed? As a group leader, not facing the boss seems implausible, and also allowing the team members to slack off. Could he be intentionally creating this scenario to observe us?"
Tang Zheng was indeed observing. The walls had been shattered, giving him a high vantage point, allowing him to see everything in the courtyard. He had witnessed the fight go from a climax to a deadlock and knew it was time for him to intervene and sort out the situation.
"Full firepower!" The mist around Tang Zheng disappeared as he entered Hero Mode, and Gravity Suppression fell upon the Stitching Beast, causing it to stiffen and crawl towards the ground.
Boom, the warhammer smashed onto its forehead, and Lin Weiguo’s furious onslaught left it riddled with wounds and soaked in blood, with a large portion of flesh torn from its left side.
Under the threat of death, the Stitching Beast went berserk, struggling like a mad cow, crashing through several walls with the two men, and fell in the courtyard, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Tang Zheng exerted his legs, shattering the stone pavement and sinking into the ground. He grabbed an iron chain and yanked it fiercely, dragging the Stitching Beast back.
The warrior sprinted, swinging the warhammer in full circle and smacked it onto the beast’s head, sending it flying towards the sky, the iron chain tensing straight in an instant.
"Together, old soldier, wholeheartedly, you guys handle Frank." Tang Zheng roared, muscles in his arms straining as he pulled the Synthetic Beast back and simultaneously charged forward.
Sizzle, as they crossed paths, Snow Represents Maru stabbed into a head of the Synthetic Beast, and Tang Zheng, using the inertia, sliced through its body.
Splat, the two halves of the body dropped into the bushes, but it didn’t die—the remaining head still growled, trying to regenerate.
Lin Weiguo crawled out from the rubble, ran a few steps, and then leaped like a meteor crashing down on Frank. Meanwhile, everyone else went full firepower, spurred by Tang Zheng’s presence.
"Xueqi, Meiqin, Tao Ran, the three of you wreck the Stitching Beast’s corpse." In Hero Mode, Tang Zheng was incredibly fast. With an afterimage, he appeared behind Frank, swung Snow Represents Maru, which was dodged, but Tang Zheng immediately kicked its lower back.
Crack, Frank’s spine broke, almost bending into a horizontal V shape. Just as its body flew out, Tang Zheng grabbed its armature, pulled it back, and slammed his knee viciously into its cheek.
Tang Zheng didn’t stop his assault but treated it like a punching bag. Under Gravity Suppression, he unleashed a wild barrage of hits, creating whirls in the air around him as seen by the newbies, who could only see a blur of shadows.
Li Xinlan and the others at the second tier simply couldn’t make an impact, while those at the third tier could still see clearly but struggled to land attacks, often missing their targets.
Mu Nianqi frowned, Tang Zheng’s foundation was very solid. As a 1st tier hero, his combat power was definitely in the top three. Even facing a 2nd tier hero, the dauntless ones, he wasn’t without the power to fight.
Queen Mu still underestimated Tang Zheng’s potential. After fusing two viruses, his physique had been improving continuously. Given enough time, he would evolve into a perfect combat state, granting him strong survivability.
Frank had been heavily damaged and surrounded earlier, and at this moment, he couldn’t withstand Tang Zheng’s full assault. In less than a minute, he was smashed into a heap of unrecognizable mush, dropping a gun, a soul dagger, and a star seed.
Gasping for air, Tang Zheng knelt on the ground. He didn’t move to gather the spoils, and neither did anyone else have the courage to, as Mu Nianqi exerted her power to kill Jiang Liming, who had become a puppet.
"The consumption is still manageable!" There was a lot of crisis within the team, forcing Tang Zheng to be very cautious with his usage of life energy.
Scientific Monster No.1, SS level Firearms, Spiritual-breaking and Demon-breaking Equipment, could emit a green ray, doubling the attack on living beings, capable of burning souls, and simultaneously adding curses, dizziness, blackened vision, decomposition among other negative effects, with unlimited ammunition, maximum range of five hundred meters.
"Meiqin, do you want it?" A handgun with quite impressive attributes although it looked a bit sickening. Pang Meiqin had exerted most of the effort in the recent fight, so naturally, it should go to her. Of course, this was also because Tang Zheng had started to trust her slightly. As for others, there was nothing left to distribute.
"I’ll take it!" Pang Meiqin had Hell’s Song, paired with special effect bullets and the Reaper Angel, its power was no less than SS level. However, due to suspicions about Tang Zheng and her teammates, she decided it was safer to keep the equipment in hand.
Without hesitation, Tang Zheng tossed it to her, while also observing the expressions of others.
Spirit Dagger, S-grade, the sole effect being that upon stabbing a target, there was a certain chance of destroying the enemy’s soul, turning them into obedient puppets. It had a damage increase tenfold against spirit-type monsters. Note, the power increases after absorbing the blood of the holder.
"I’ll hold onto this one," Tang Zheng collected the dagger.
No one objected, given that his combat power was the highest and he had the greatest chance of hitting the boss.
"Let’s go, off to kill the Ghost Bride." Tang Zheng threw the seed to Lin Weiguo, not even bothering to ask others’ opinions on these trivial matters as he could make decisions on such himself.
"You’re really generous!" Although the dropped seeds were average, Mu Nianqi was still impressed seeing Tang Zheng distribute them all and keep nothing for himself. "This guy must be the real deal, a counterfeit wouldn’t be this foolish."
"Average!" Tang Zheng didn’t care for such things, as Gu Xueqi returned the wild cat.
"What about those corpses? Just leave them there?" The newbies, seeing their alumni dead, were sad and disheartened, one student with big ears muttered, trying to earn some favor.
"You can go gather the bodies!" Tang Zheng couldn’t care less, Teng Yuangxiang gave him a sharp retort.
"It should take about half a day to reach Fairy Tale Town if we had transportation, it would probably be much faster." The wild cat, rubbing its hands submissively, hinted, "This castle should have a stable, maybe there’s a carriage available."
"No need, let’s go!" Tang Zheng tried, but technological vehicles were out of commission, so he mounted a velociraptor. With so many people, even ten carriages wouldn’t be enough.
The Warhammer team set out, the Conquerors all brought out their own mounts, leaving the newbies to walk behind them.
Throughout the journey, Tang Zheng was preoccupied, worried that these counterfeits would notice something off. He really wanted to talk to each team member.
"It shouldn’t be memory tampering, otherwise what’s the difference from just killing us? Trojan probably doesn’t have the capability to swap survivors’ souls either." Tang Zheng realized there were an unbelievable number of issues, overwhelming him. If there were counterfeits in the team, where were his real teammates? Did he have any counterfeits himself? "Could I be dreaming all this time?"
"Let’s test it out with the Ghost Bride!" After half a day’s journey, in a small forest, Tang Zheng ordered the team to rest.
The newbies immediately sat down, complaining bitterly. Several female students had blisters on their feet, crying from the pain.
"How much longer to Fairy Tale Town?" Tang Zheng looked at the wild cat hanging beside the mount’s neck, trapped like a zongzi, swinging back and forth like a cocoon.
"Half an hour." The wild cat pleaded, "Can you let me go? If the bride finds out I’ve snitched, she’ll kill me."
"Xueqi, Jing Xiang, distribute some food and water to the newbies." Tang Zheng ignored the wild cat, surveying the nearby environment. (To be continued. If you like this work, you are welcome to vote for it at qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
