Chapter 1266: Chapter 20 Cemetery
"My leg hurts, you have to carry me!" Lu Fan sprang up, hugged Tang Zheng’s waist, and then, like a koala, used her hands and feet to climb up, embraced his neck, and planted a kiss on his cheek with a smack.
Tang Zheng supported Lu Fan’s buttocks with one hand and ran through the forest, chasing after the team.
"You chose not to kill the Ghost Bride first but went after Frankenstein instead. You must have other intentions, right?" Lu Fan wanted to know just how much Tang Zheng had figured out.
"Choosing Frankenstein as the primary target was to test the intentions of these impostors. If they were on the same side as the monsters, things would be bad, but I could still run away, regroup with the team, and fight another day. However, facing the Ghost Bride directly means entering the Boss battle, and there might be no chance to adjust," Tang Zheng’s expression was very grave, this was an unprecedented trouble.
"What if they’re not?" Lu Fan’s eyes shifted as she thought hard, "I think they are in cahoots, anyway. Their goal is to kill us, right?"
"No, there must be a deeper meaning. If it was just about killing, they could have done it a long time ago, no need to drag it out," Tang Zheng shook his head, numerous hypotheses making his head a mess.
"They did start, didn’t they? Xu Liangmao and the others are dead, aren’t they?" Lu Fan tightened her grip around Tang Zheng’s neck.
"That’s not right, I reckon they aren’t together," Tang Zheng thought Little Lolita was afraid of falling and didn’t pay much attention.
"Give me a reason?"
"Firstly, when did these impostors take the place of the real people? Or when did the souls of the real people change? The most likely time is during the process of teleporting into the game. Anything can happen in those three seconds. Although there’s never been a mistake before, it doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. This would explain the impostors trapped in the cages in the Giant’s Cave."
"So you’re saying the Magic Mirror randomly selects toys for a duel to the death, and it might end up killing an impostor?" Lu Fan caught on quickly.
"Yes." Tang Zheng had already spotted the tail end of the team; they were clearly waiting for him.
"What if the Magic Mirror knew in advance and was just putting on a show for us?" Lu Fan’s assumption complicated the issue even further.
"My intuition tells me Sha Ou is fake, and the Magic Mirror watching him die is evidence!" Tang Zheng lowered his voice, ready to end this topic; they couldn’t let others know yet.
"Ai Yixin might be fake too," Lu Fan’s rebuttal made Tang Zheng frown and glance back at her.
"What is it?" Lu Fan’s heart skipped a beat, but she flashed a sweet smile.
"It’s nothing." Tang Zheng took a deep breath; he had been about to tell Lu Fan that if the impostors were not in the same camp as the monsters, they could pretend to be unaware of them and use them to kill the Boss, reaping the benefits, but it was playing with fire. However, he believed he could pull it off, but in the end, the words never left his mouth.
"There’s something not quite right." Tang Zheng felt frustrated and discarded these tangled thoughts, carefully following at the tail of the team, observing the performance of the team members.
With Wildcat leading the way, the Warhammer Team took nearly an hour to emerge from the forest and arrive at an endless Cemetery, with tombstones everywhere, exuding the smell of rotting Soil, and burying countless dry bones. Some crows were noisily pecking at maggots for food.
"Once we cross this place, we’ll see Frankenstein’s Castle — can you let me go?" Wildcat didn’t want to continue and pleaded with Tang Zheng.
"We’ll talk once I see the Castle," Tang Zheng refused, "Is there anything we should watch out for?"
"I don’t know, I’ve never been here," Wildcat realized she had slipped up and was about to cover up when Lin Weiguo grabbed her by the neck.
"Are you playing us? How do you know the way if you’ve never been here?" Teng Yuangxiang drew her dagger and pressed it against Wildcat’s belly, "Want me to make a hole for you?"
"I heard it from a friend, it’s a donkey that once carried flour to the Castle’s owner," Wildcat’s claws flailed, but to no avail against Lin Weiguo in his Tyrannosaurus gear.
"Keep moving," Tang Zheng spoke, and the team members had to comply. The beautiful university girl complained softly, which Pang Meiqin overheard and angrily slapped her twice.
They moved deeper along the narrow paths of the Cemetery, the atmosphere becoming oppressive. As dusk fell, it cast a shadow over everyone’s hearts. Tang Zheng rearranged the formation, placing Dantai and Qin Yan as the vanguard. Now that he knew there could be impostors within the team, he wouldn’t go all out in the fighting.
"Do you see that? No Trespassing!" Jing Lan tugged at Song Xin’s sleeve, pointing out a rotten wooden sign standing about ten meters away with a string of English written in blood on it, and a human head impaled on it.
"Scary stuff!" Dantai shot the head to pieces and palm-sized centipedes, alarmed, scurried out, fleeing in panic. The gunshot also disturbed the Undead’s rest; groups of Green Skin zombies broke through the Soil and crawled out, launching a desperate charge.
"No retreat, attack!" Tang Zheng took out the East Sea Road First Bow that could strike spirits, drawing it into a full circle. A speckled arrow formed and, with the release of his fingers, it whistled out and plowed a corridor through the zombie horde, littered with severed limbs and mutilated flesh.
The newbies were in unrest, but none fled. They weren’t fools. If the Conquerors didn’t leave, venturing off on their own was a sure path to death.
Dantai Zongqi glanced around, judged the position of the monsters, and started to exert force. A fan-shaped Mental Impact swept out, but since the zombies lacked consciousness and were effectively dead flesh, there was no damage inflicted.
Dantai didn’t mind and withdrew the Demon Slaying Holy Flame. Rapidly firing, a Magic Array appeared a foot from the muzzle. The buckshot passed through, carrying a brilliant red tail, and amidst the graveyard at dusk, it resembled the dream-chasing fireflies.
Lu Fan tossed out the Wisdom Sword, which flew into the air and rotated, transforming into a hundred sword shadows. With a downward swing of Little Lolita’s right hand, the sword blades stabbed downward, shredding hundreds of zombies and causing soil to scatter with the stench of rot wafting into the air.
"We can kill these zombies with spiritual power weapons!" Mu Nianqi fired a Storm Barrage from her Devil Flame Pistol, instantly wiping out a section of the zombie horde, but the rotten flesh began to wriggle and attempt to re-fuse.
Qin Yan wielded the Doomsday Predator machine gun, continuously firing over her defensive area, and due to the lack of Group Kill Weapons, she seemed a bit overwhelmed.
Pang Meiqin’s Purgatory Explosive Arrows were mighty powerful. Once they hit a target, they’d burn fiercely, turning it into a heap of ashes before dissipating. However, they were expensive, and she was reluctant to waste them on such basic enemies, preferring to watch from the back instead.
Ai Yixin’s Shadowless Bow was quite effective against zombies. Besides that, the weapons of the Warhammer Team were noticeably scarce, resorting to firing spiritual power bullets to compensate.
"Jing Xiang, catch!" Tang Zheng tossed the Shadowless Bow to Catwoman; after all, among the group, she used it the most and had the best aim.
Ruan Feifei clenched her right hand, forming a Thunderball and threw it, creating a two-meter-wide pit upon explosion.
Tao Ran and Jing Lan, lacking powerful weapons, could only release energy. As newbies, they didn’t think of shirking their duties. The Time-space Blackfish flew out, biting through zombies, while Reaper swung the Sickle, cutting down a swath of headless corpses.
Zhao Dongtao’s Floating Cannon unfolded at a height of ten meters and bombarded from above, flinging soil everywhere and completely overturning the ground.
"Don’t waste your life energy. If you have no gun, fall back," Tang Zheng stopped them, attacking with his Devil Flame Pistol. The actions of Tao Ran’s group somewhat eased his suspicions. Clearly, imposters wouldn’t fight so desperately. Besides, their power wasn’t strong, and even if they were fakes, he wasn’t worried they’d cause much chaos and could suppress them in time.
Jing Xiang was obedient and, upon receiving the First Bow, continuously drew it, sweeping through zombies. The more it was used, the greater the energy consumption.
"Enough, you can’t even shoot the monsters accurately. Give the bow to Bai Guo!" Tang Zheng pretended to be angry and rebuked Jing Xiang.
A thick layer of limbs and viscera had piled up on the ground as a result of the massive zombie deaths, and a green poisonous mist gathered and drifted over.
"Xueqi, purify them. Dong Zixuan, burn us a path," Tang Zheng commanded the battle, causing the university students behind him to look on with envy.
Gu Xueqi struck with both hands, and the Flame Phoenix, with its clear cry, crashed into the mist, exploding into sparks. When these touched the mist, it immediately burned away without a trace.
Dong Zixuan was still distracted. Ever since she killed that university student in the cave, her long-held beliefs had collapsed. A policewoman full of a sense of justice needed to find new motivation to keep living.
"Look at me!" Tang Zheng took several strides to the policewoman’s front, and slapped her across the cheek, "You merely slew a wrongdoer with evil thoughts. What do you care about?"
"But..." Holding her swollen cheek, the policewoman was cut off by Tang Zheng before she could finish.
"There are no buts. Everyone is striving to survive, so what have you been doing? Think about your family and friends; don’t worry them," Tang Zheng bellowed, all the while imperceptibly observing others from the corner of his eye, "What good are regret and self-reproach? What you need to do is to keep moving forward with strength. Don’t squander your formidable abilities. Many want to live but lack your strength and luck. You should be grateful. If you can’t stand it, see this game through with me, go to the Holy Land, uncover the puppet master, and tear its bones apart!"
The policewoman’s eyes gradually brightened. Yes, go to the Holy Land, find the backers of the Silver Trojan, and bring them to justice.
Tang Zheng didn’t need to guess; he knew the policewoman full of a sense of justice was genuine. An imposter wouldn’t be so foolishly brave.
Finally, the policewoman demonstrated her powerful ability. The ground seemed like boiling water, churning out red lava that incinerated the zombie corpses to ash, then cooled off, forming a black safe passage.
"Move!" Tang Zheng urged Dantai and Qin Yan to hurry along. Pang Meiqin noticed that the ever-courageous Group Leader had begun to shrink back, stirring confusion within her. Coupled with the odd behavior of the others, a bad premonition suddenly struck her.
"Damn it, could Tang Zheng be an imposter?" The Beautiful Leg Stewardess realized they were in big trouble. (To be continued. If you like this work, welcome to Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendation tickets, monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
